Chapter Six

VALENTINA ** As soon as the realization dawned on me, I concentrated on knowing the number. It wasn’t difficult to know that it wasn’t just one single rogue. There were a few who could easily kill us. I immediately mind-linked Joseph, the border patrol captain. Valentina – Joseph, rogues are in the territory. Inform the patrol to close down on the packhouse. They are unaware that I’ve already known of their presence but we don’t have much time. I quickly mind-linked. I didn’t know how I had thought of doing all this, but I was. Joseph – S-h-i-t! Glad you knew, Valentina. I’ll close down. Leave through the tunnel. He replied quickly. I had pinged him on the emergency signal so he must’ve been alerted. Valentina – Will do that. I said to him and crawled out of the kitchen. I didn’t want them to see me moving and get alerted. I rushed upstairs to Luna Ani’s room. She was one of the most important aspects to be kept safe. She had the future Alpha growing in her belly. I let out an immediate mind-link to everybody. Valentina – Code Red! Attack around the packhouse! Take tunnel two for women and children. The warriors are ready. Stay away from the windows. I commanded. I didn’t know how, but it came naturally. Various responses sent affirmations on the link. I shut the mind-link and banged on the door. Luna Meredith opened the door, looking sleepy. No one must’ve reached out to her. “Luna, we have to vacate right now. Our pack is under rogue attack.” I rushed as I strode inside, almost pushing her to the side. My legs moved to the bed, to a peacefully sleeping Luna Ani. “Luna Ani, wake up! Luna Ani!” I yelled and she woke up looking dazed. I didn’t have time to explain the situation. We had to vacate this place with her. “Luna, you need to be calm and follow me right now. No questions.” I told her and immediately helped her up, slid her house footwear and walked towards her closet. “Luna Meredith, let’s go.” I ushered as I opened the closet that led to the hidden tunnel. I opened the door and let Luna Ani walk ahead. I looked behind and Luna Meredith gave me a glad look. I had never seen her face look this serene. “Luna, come on! We have to rush now!” I yelled at her, not caring if she would punish me. I caught her hand and attempted to pull her but she held my hand, ceasing my actions. We heard the glass-shattering noise and it echoed. By now, it was all chaos and screams. My lips quivered and I didn’t know how to solve this or whose order to follow now to save all of this. “What do we do now?” I asked her, panic taking over me. “They’ve attacked!” I yelled as if she hadn’t already heard it. “You have to take action, Valentina. You have to.” She insisted and I shook my head, not confident that I could even succeed in that. “All my life, I’ve hated that you took away Liam’s attention and love away from Vincent. Despite that, I have always been glad that Liam saved you. Since you came into this pack, it has grown well. I was just jealous, since I knew that you were special. I just want to tell you that there is a reason why you still haven’t shifted and why we never allowed you to step out of the pack. You’ll know it soon.” She said to me as if it were her last words to me. “Don’t say such things, please.” I implored, but she just shook her head, caressing my hand in a soft caress. “I hope my rude remarks made you strong and have pushed you to a path that is meant for you. I’m glad that you are willing to take care of Vincent’s mate and I’ll be glad to be your layman.” She professed and my heart clenched. I hadn’t realised that tears had fallen down my eyes, without a stop. I never imagined Luna Meredith to have a soft spot for me. I never thought she had any other feeling than hate towards me. “Luna, please! You can yell at me later!! Please, let’s go!” I cried out, ignoring her earlier statements and trying to pull her. She shook her head in denial. “My time has come. As a Luna, I will never abandon my pack at such a time. I’ll lock this so they won’t know you escaped until later. You have to take Ani and rush to where Vincent is. I’ve mind-linked him. He’ll meet you in the middle.” She notified me and my eyes widened. “Luna! Please!” I screamed through my tears. My heart clenched as it felt the pain of our pack members hurting. “I, Meredith Liam Walter, as the Luna of the Starlight Pack, order you to leave with Luna Ani and take care of her child to hold the future of this pack.” She ordered, caressing my hair for the first and probably the last time. I couldn’t disobey her words. “I’m forever grateful, Luna. You have kept a very high bar for Luna Ani. I have always respected you and will forever do.” I confessed. Tears were falling down Luna’s eyes, too. “Valentina, you are meant for some very big things. Don’t fall apart.” Luna encouraged me and I nodded through my blurred eyes. Screams were heard very close by and it was a clear sign. “I won’t, I promise,” I muttered and held her hand for one last time. She raised her hand and caressed my cheek, giving me a quick peck. My hand was on my cheek, feeling her soft touch’s leftover warmth. She was the only shadow close to what I could call mother. “Give my love to my son. Tell him, his parents are proud of him.” She gave me her last message for Alpha Vincent and I nodded. I walked inside the tunnel and saw Luna Ani slowly waddle down. Luckily, she hadn’t heard our conversation. “Luna, you were the mother figure in my life. Please, try to come back to me to yell at me. I...demand.” I saw an unfathomable look in her eyes and she nodded, but I could read her hopeless eyes. “Go now!” She urged and shut the door and locked it. A clear indication that she was indeed staying back. My heart crumbled, bit by bit. I wiped my face desperately trying to hide the red of my eyes. I turned my back towards the door and took fast steps to catch up with Luna Ani. I had promised to keep her safe and even if I had to give my life to protect hers, I would. I knew where we had to go. Royal Knight Moon Pack. “Where is Mother?” Luna Ani inquired as we were closing down on the underground tunnel that would lead us through the pack border. I didn’t say anything but waited for the tunnel to end so I could talk to her. “Can we first finish the tunnel?” I implored her. We can’t squander time discussing anything right now. We had to rush and make it to the Alpha King’s territory in human form since we both couldn’t shift. “I’ll hold that question.” She announced in a warning tone and then waddled down. The tunnel was dark and difficult to cross. Others were going to get out on the east side of the territory while we would get out on the south side. This was the side to where the Royal Alpha King’s territory lay, fortunately. “Luna Ani, please hurry up. Alpha Vincent will be waiting for us.” I explained and ushered her, urging her to finish the tunnel. It took us a few more minutes and difficulty breathing, because of the lack of oxygen, to see the light. We soon stepped out of the tunnel and into the open forest. This was an area that didn’t belong to anyone. We had crossed the border and now we had to go ahead. “Now, tell me. Where is Mother? Father?” She asked and I felt my heart squeeze the little amount of hope I was holding onto. “I don’t have time to answer that now. They are fighting with the pack.” I answered her and she looked broken and helpless. “I was supposed to fight, not her. Valentina, we have to go back to the pack and save them. We have to! I can’t run away like this!” She yelled at me and tried to walk towards the pack when I held her hand. “You are pregnant.” I reminded her. “You will only cause them to worry. You have to keep this little Alpha safe and that is your prime duty for the future of this pack.” I tried to explain to her and shed a few tears. “I’m so ashamed that I can’t hold my pack now.” She confessed and I felt her pain. She must’ve been feeling the bond breaking as we were losing members. “We can cry over this later. We have to go no. Please, Luna Ani.” I pulled her along with me and she gave in this time. I had no other option but to do that to her because we needed to get to a safe zone. We both walk-ran to the place we had to reach. We were in our human form so we couldn’t be faster. Luna Ani was jogging and trying her best. But with her pregnant belly, we could only accomplish this much. I didn’t know how to keep her safe, but I had to. We were wandering for about an hour when Luna Ani halted. We still had an almost five-hour walk left, since we were going at human speed. The rogues would come to us in half an hour if we didn’t move. “Luna Ani, please keep hope just until we reach Alpha Vincent,” I said to her and then it clicked. “Can you mind-link him?” I asked her, since it would be easier for us to find him. “My wolf is completely protecting our child and has cut off connection with me. I can’t mind-link.” She explained to me. Valentina – Alpha Vincent! Al…I realised I wasn’t passing through. Valentina – Onyx, can you try and mind-link Alpha Vincent? I asked Onyx since I couldn’t get through, but she wouldn’t answer either. Valentina – Onyx! Onyx! I yelled but still nothing. I couldn’t feel Onyx for some reason I wasn’t aware of. Now that my wolf too had cut off her connection with me, I was as much as a normal human being and I couldn’t even smell anyone’s scent. That meant I wouldn’t know if a rogue was close by. “Luna Ani, I don’t know what’s the case with my wolf, but she has cut her connection with me, too. My apologies.” I explained to her regretfully. “What do we do now, Val?” She asked, panicking. I was clueless, too, so I didn’t comprehend how to comfort her. “I’m sure we can do this, Luna.” I motivated myself and took her hand in mine and walked towards the other pack, praying and wishing to find Alpha Vincent soon. -- ARES ** Ares – We’ll trace the path to your pack, guide me. I mind-linked Alpha Vincent. An Alpha can mind-link to another Alpha if both of them allow it. But I could mind-link anyone I wanted because I was the King. Vincent – Will do, Alpha. He responded and we both ran. He led the path and I followed him. Regan followed me, having our team of warriors tail behind him. Sprinting at our maximum speed, we covered the distance at double speed. Regan and the batch were a little far behind. They couldn’t compete with our speed. Vincent – I could feel my mate being closer. Alpha Vincent mind-linked me and I looked at him, affirming that I had heard his statement. We both gained momentum and he kept trying to find his mate’s scent. Since I had no idea of his mate’s scent, I could only follow him. Erebus – Ares, I’m feeling something. Erebus suddenly muttered once. I let him talk to me as he was bugging me in my mind. Ares – What? What is it suddenly? I questioned him because it was very unusual for him to say such words. Erebus – An unsettling feeling. He was riddling me as if I hadn’t already read one not long ago. Ares – Erebus, be clear about it. Don’t play games on me. I yelled at him because we were in between a task. I should be taking care of my wolf’s issues, but now was not the time. Erebus – I’m serious, Ares. You’ll find out soon. Saying those words, he cut our mind-link but was constantly pacing in my mind. His unsettling feeling had settled into me. Vincent – We are near. Vincent mind-linked and I affirmed. Closing on to his mate was a good thing, but I smelled rogues. Ares – Rogues are here. Find your mate soon. I informed him and he nodded. He was trying to mind-link me about something but time had slowed down suddenly. A wonderful smell mixed with oranges and a musky scent hit my senses. I almost paused from the high speed I was running at. I knew what this scent was and the reason behind it but I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that I was about to find the person that scent belonged to. I couldn’t believe that…I was going to find my mate. Erebus, who was in the back of my mind, seemed to have come ahead. He and I were both looking for the source of that aroma but it seemed to come from the direction where Alpha Vincent was running. Still, I ran along with Vincent. I was afraid my mate would be a rogue from the group we were trying to hunt down. It would be another hell to let my pack trust her and accept her. After all that I had been through and put myself through. I couldn’t believe I was blessed with a mate. The smell was becoming stronger and stronger with every passing second. Alpha Vincent shifted back to his human form. I shifted by the tree with a mark where I knew a few clothes would be kept. I put on shorts and threw one at Vincent. He quickly wore it and then sprinted ahead. “Ani! Please voice out! It’s me, Ani!” He screamed and looked around. He was smelling her and finally seemed to have found her. The smell that covered my senses was guiding me to Luna Ani. My eyes widened. Alpha Vincent hugged Luna Ani and I was breathing heavily. The scent of Luna Ani was the scent that was driving me crazy. But she was a marked and pregnant Luna. I couldn’t understand the fact that she was my Luna. Erebus – At the back. Erebus cleared my confusion and then I looked behind to find another woman, my mate. She appeared like a warrior to me, who stood there in just a pair of bralette and jeans, covered in dirt and blood, wounded and s-l-a-s-h-e-d. It didn’t take me another second to understand that Luna Ani had a sweatshirt that belonged to my mate, that’s why I guessed she was my mate. My mate’s eyes met mine and I gasped as I witnessed the most beautiful shade of emerald in her eyes. Mate I whispered in acknowledgement and also read her lips muttering the same words.
