After another round of coercive intimacy, Hugo quickly cleaned up and got dressed, his expression as cold and indifferent as ever. Sarah remained half-reclined on the sofa, her gaze fixed on him. The love that had once filled her eyes was gone, replaced by a cold finality.
"Hugo, let's get a divorce," she said calmly, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her.
Hugo froze, caught off guard. For a brief moment, surprise flickered across his face, a rare crack in his otherwise impenetrable facade.
But it vanished just as quickly, replaced by a sneer as he looked down at her. "How long are you going to keep up this game of playing hard to get?"
Sarah met his gaze steadily, her resolve unwavering. Without a word, she got up, dressed herself, and retrieved a folder from the drawer.
She pushed the divorce agreement and a pen across the table towards him, the papers sliding silently across the polished surface.
"Sign it."
Hugo's eyes darkened with suspicion as he picked up the papers. His brow furrowed when he noticed that Sarah wasn't asking for anything. Not a dime, not a property.
His grip on the document tightened involuntarily. Was she serious about this?
How could that be?
This was the woman who had insisted on marrying him.
He let out a sneer, his eyes full of derision. "Even if this is just another of your tantrums, don't you think you're taking it too far?"
Leaning back against the sofa, Sarah felt the weight of exhaustion settle over her. She was so very tired.
Her voice was calm, but her tone carried the despair of someone who had reached her limit. "I'm done."
She truly was.
She had poured everything she had into this relationship yet received nothing but disdain and humiliation in return.
For the first time, she realized that letting go might not be as hard as she'd imagined.
She didn't even bother to glance at him. Her indifference seemed to pierce through Hugo, his expression turning colder by the second.
"Fine," he snapped. "But don't come to me with tears later. Don't you dare regret this."
He snatched the pen, poised to sign, but before he could put ink to paper, the door burst open.
Standing there in a flowing white dress was Jenny, her pale face painted with urgency.
Sarah's eyes darkened. The coma patient had barely been awake for a week, and she was already here?
How predictable.
A whole week of playing the damsel in distress at the hospital hadn't been enough for her. Now she had to come flaunt herself in front of Sarah, too?
Hugo's expression shifted. Concern flashed across his face as he strode towards Jenny. "What brings you here? The doctor mentioned specifically that you should rest and stay in bed."
Jenny gave him a sweet smile, her voice soft and fragile. "I'm fine," she murmured.
The worry in Hugo's eyes was almost tangible, and Jenny's smile was filled with affection.
Sarah's hands clenched into fists. This was what she had always longed for but never received.
Jenny's gaze fell on the divorce papers on the table. Her eyes widened, and she turned to Sarah with exaggerated shock.
"Sarah, are you really divorcing Hugo? Is it because of me?"
Sarah let out a sneer. Jenny had always thrived on playing the victim, sowing discord between Sarah and their father.
Now, it seemed she had extended her talents to Sarah's marriage, manipulating the situation with her usual cunning. But it didn't matter anymore. Sarah was determined to get a divorce, no matter the cost.
Jenny's lips twitched, betraying her struggle to hide her satisfaction. She stepped closer, feigning anxiety with a practiced ease, her eyes darting around as if searching for sympathy. "Sarah, I know Hugo spent a lot of time at the hospital with me while I was unconscious. I'm sorry if it upset you. But he was just fulfilling an obligation. You didn't misunderstand our relationship, did you? Is that why you want a divorce?"
Sarah turned her head away, her patience wearing thin.
Jenny sighed and said helplessly, "But you've already taken my engagement to Hugo. I didn't even hold it against you. Isn't it natural for him to take care of me after everything?"
Sarah's mocking smile deepened as she stood.
Her body was still weak from her recent hospitalization, but the sheer force of her presence made Jenny instinctively shrink back.
Hugo immediately stepped in front of Jenny, his gaze icy. "What are you trying to do?"
Sarah's smirk widened. "Only a fool like you would fall for such pathetic acting."
Hugo froze. Before he could respond, Sarah picked up the pen and signed her name swiftly on both copies of the agreement.
"I'll wait for you to send me the signed papers." Her voice was as calm as if she were discussing the weather.
She had no intention of wasting another second in this prison of a house. Now, she only wanted to escape from this suffocating cage.
Just then, Sarah's phone rang. The name on the screen made her pause, but she answered it without hesitation. Before she could speak, an urgent voice came through.
"Penny, you need to come back. If you don't act now, the patient won't survive."
Sarah's expression shifted as she strode towards the door. "Send me the address."
Hugo's eyes narrowed as he processed the conversation.
'Penny?'
'A life-threatening situation?'
Could it be... Sarah was the renowned doctor he had been searching for all this time?
