Chapter Eight Pony The narrow, deeply rutted mountain road turned steeper as she came around the curve, the strain on her shoulders and waist increased with the degree of the slope and Lucy had to lean further forward into the harness to keep the wagon moving. She knew from bitter, former experience that once the large wheels of the wagon behind her stopped turning, it was much harder to get it moving again and there was the risk of the entire rig reversing and rolling back down the mountain, dragging her with it.
