“Claire, it’s OK. Hush. It was just a nightmare. You are safe”, I heard a voice telling me. I could feel the hot
Tears were running down my face and I could smell the familiar scent I was used to. My throat was sore from screaming. I was in Casey’s arms and not in the car. I looked around, still panicking. “It’s OK Claire. You are home. it was a nightmare”, Casey’s husband Chase said, calmly turning on my bedroom light for me to see. I reached up to touch my head expecting to feel hot sticky blood, but the only thing that remained there was a scar. It was burning. I rubbed the area to ease the burn. The pack doctor had told me years ago that the scar would remain because I did not have my wolf to heal me then. I was too young when my parents were killed that day. I was only four at the time. In a week it will be fourteen years since my parents died and the nightmare of it all still haunts me.
Casey wiped my face with a cool rag. “Are you OK” she asked gently as she smiled down at me. I nodded my head. “Thank you Casey and Chase” I said as I sat up in the bed, my voice scratchy. Casey handed me a cup of tea that one of the kitchen workers had just brought for me. I took a sip of it. It felt good to my throat and I began to relax, knowing it was just the same nightmare I had been left with as a reminder of what had happened that day.
“Was there anything different this time”, Chase asked me, hoping I could tell him something different or who had been responsible for my parents' death. I shook my head no as I looked at the ground in shame. I had been no help at all to find the ones who had attacked us. I blamed myself because there was no justice for my parents because I had been too scared to open my eyes. “Now Claire doesn’t do that. It is not your fault. If you had opened your eyes, then you would not be here today”, Casey said as she knew what I was thinking. “I know, but I can’t help but feel guilty.” I said as I buried my face into my pillow as tears poured from my eyes. Casey sat beside me on one side and Chase on the other side, just like they have done since that day, since the day that they became my parents. Chase was my father's Beta. The next in command and his life-long best friend. Casey was my mother's best friend. They agreed to adopt me and to raise me until I was of age to lead the pack. In a week I will be.
After I calmed down from the nightmare, Chase handed me my medicine while Casey handed me my
tea. “You know the deal kiddo” Chase said, handing me the medicine. I reluctantly took the pill from him
and popped it into my mouth and washed it down with my tea. The pack doctor prescribed the medicine
a few years ago when the nightmares became so severe that after I spent almost a year in the hospital in a sound-proof room, I almost killed myself. Chase found me in the shower. I had slit both of my arms all of the way up my arm. The pack doctor was able to save my life, but now I have to take medicine whenever nightmares occurred. They put me into a deep sleep where I do not dream. It is just darkness, but I hated taking them. I hated being oblivious to what was going on around me and with my pack, but I hated the nightmares even more. At least I had Chase and Casey to see after the pack until I woke up.
After the death of my parents, the pack became mine. I was the Alpha’s daughter and of the original blood line. There was no one higher ranked than myself except the moon goddess herself. I was the last of the true original blood line. All of the others
had been killed.
No one other than my pack knew that I had lived through the attack. The council of elders thought It was safer for me than all of the others thought I was dead. At least for now, anyway. The elders of the pack wanted to wait until I had my wolf before it was announced that I was alive and the rightful Alpha of my pack and the sole heir of my parents' estate. I technically already had everything already, but it was not to be made public until I reached eighteen. Now it was about to happen. it was only a week away.
All of this ran through my mind as my head as I lay in Casey’s lap while she stroked my hair. Darkness would
overcome me shortly and clear my thoughts, until then the memories and thoughts flooded me. I closed my eyes. “It will be quiet soon” the voice in my head explained. That voice belonged to my wolf Saharra. No one knew that I have had my wolf since the day my parents died. I was to scared to let anyone know The moon goddess knew that I needed her and allowed her to surface early. She was the only reason that I had survived.
I was ready for the silence to begin, especially when the images began to flash in my mind along with every detail of the nightmare. It was like my mind would dissect every bit of detail to see if there was anything different or new that could possibly lead to who had killed them. I felt Chase as he got up off of the bed as gently as he could.
He placed my parents' blanket over me and kissed my forehead. “Goodnight Claire, you are safe now and always”, he whispered. My eyes were now too heavy to respond. The last thing I remembered was him cutting off the lamp by my bed.
