Mikkie's POV
As we got out of the room, Kamille was talking happily as we make our way to the cafeteria since it's early lunch. While walking, I hear murmurs around us. At first, I thought Kamille is not aware of our surroundings but no, she was distracted from talking about something and can see from her face that she was affected.
"Look at the two..." from my peripheral vision, I saw them talking about us. I can tell because they were looking at us oddly...
"It’s the gold digger and the lunatic."
Wait, what? Who are they referring to as lunatic? Me? Since when did they start calling me names like that? I have been only here for at least three to four hours yet they already giving me crazy nicknames.
I looked at Kamille who was gloomy all of a sudden from what's happening around us then I just held her hand and pulled her to the cafeteria. I looked for a table for both of us near the window and dropped our belongings and ordered something. Once we ordered our meal, we sat down and I looked at Kamille who was smiling at me.
"I don't know if you heard that a while ago but, thank you!" She said, I just shrugged my shoulder to acknowledge her gratitude.
"Things like that are just a waste of time, seriously," I told her while unwrapping my sandwich. As I said, I am obsessed with bread. Kamille's smile grew wider and we ate our meal quietly.
"Did you know that our advisor awhile ago is my father?" She said that made me turn my attention from the window to her.
"Really?" I said while eating my sandwich.
"Yep, and that's why I will get scolded when he sees me sleeping in class!" She jokes while I just looked at her, she then continues talking about her father being the professor of some subjects he mentioned a while ago. She talks about it until I'm on my second sandwich.
"Oh yeah, before you eat that, I have something for you." I was about to unwrap my sandwich when Kamille placed a paper bag in front of me. it was small but I could already smell the aroma coming from the inside. It smells like a roast.
"Please have some it's all yours!" She opened the paper bag and took out the sandwich wrapped in tin foil which I assumed was homemade. I gulped when I saw the sandwich when she removed the foil; it’s enough for one person and saw the sandwich was stuffed with roast beef and other vegetables. The aroma was bursting out and wanted to be eaten so bad.
She placed the sandwich in front of me which I gladly accepted, I took a bite and made the flavors burst into my mouth. It was delicious and made with pure effort.
"Haha! Do you like it?" Kamille laughed as she saw me eating the food with delight or whatever my face is making. I didn't care, as long as I enjoy this sandwich.
"It's delicious, the meat is well roasted," I commented once I swallowed what I ate.
"I know right! I made that at home because.." then she went on and on about how she made the sandwich that I am eating, I was just listening to her since I am better at listening when I heard a commotion not too far from us so I put my attention to elsewhere when I saw that it was them. The five men.
While walking to the vacant table in the middle, the girls are swarming over them while some guys are following them and interacting with them. I was watching them when I saw one of them are looking at this way... or so I thought, he was looking at Kamille while this girl is looking at him as well but averted her attention to me and saw that I looked at both of them so she just smiled.
I don't know if my mind is playing tricks on me but, before she looked at me I saw how she was flustered or something. As if she wants to show or do something but something is preventing her to do it. I want to comfort her somehow but... is it the right time?
"Kamille?" I called when she was spacing out but snaps out once I called her, "You okay?" I asked her.
"huh? I'm okay? ohh... yes! I'm okay! Why did you ask?" She averted her eyes to her food and ate again. I just looked at her curiously while finishing the sandwich, I then looked at the guy sitting with his friends. He doesn't look like a bad person... but I can't judge him from his appearance and probably something happened between these two... but I hope it's not something bad.
Now that I looked at it, all of the students here in the cafeteria are gawking over to the five men in the middle. What's up with them? I just don't understand what's happening.
"Do you know those five men over there?" I was nibbling with my food and asked Kamille when she looked at me then looked at them then at me.
"Who? those guys?" I nodded. She nodded then sat properly so I fully paid my attention to her.
"I know that you're new to this school but I have been their classmate and a good friend since Senior High. We were all together in the Star section from day one, so I know each of them." I just listened to her while she talks more about them.
"But two things that you MUST take precaution about them," I looked at her curiously when she secretly pointed two fingers at them, "one; take precaution on their surroundings. They are always, ALWAYS swarmed by people especially girls who are ready to scratch you anytime!" She then gestured cat-like paws scratching in thin air.
"and second; as long as you don't violate any regulation inside the campus premises, you will be fine. But if you do... they will have you by the throat." I frowned upon what I heard from her.
What?
"You're confused? that's expected from a freshie. Fine, I will tell you what I know so that you're aware of where you're stepping."
Then all the rules I heard from the orientation are not the only rules I have to follow? I didn't know the students here made their rules as well. I didn't know that this school has something else that made me intrigued.
"But I will tell more about it when we get to a more secluded place since it's... not authorized," she drinks her bottled water and continued, " But I will tell you a little fact that I just heard. Did you know that 78% of the population in this university are regular students who are not aware of what's happening around them? You know, normal people who want to get their diplomas and such." She said quietly, only the two of us could hear.
"Then what about 22%?" I leaned on my chair when she just smiled at me. I stared at the girl in front of me, I didn't even know that this girl knows something that a normal student would not know. In the first place, how did she get all this information and telling me all this? Is it because I'm a freshman that she has to tell? What I'm concerned about is by what method did she even get all the information? It bothers me.
Yet it intrigues me for some reason...
I was lost in thoughts when I heard from her mouth that made me looked at her and doubt her cheerful personality.
"The rest of the population are rebels or let's say that they're gangsters if you put it that way or any other shady people you could think of whether they're influential or not. Those five men over there? They're one of them, they are one of the 22% but don't ever underestimate them, the 22% I mean. It may be a small population compared to the other percent but once they have gathered in one area, you might even doubt studying in this university if you see how they deal with each other. They kill for ranks!"
