Clay POV
I hurriedly drove to the area where Skade was staying. I had spent too much time with Emma, unable to tear myself away from her. Glancing at my phone, I saw over 100 missed calls from Liz, the constant buzzing making me feel increasingly irritated.
I parked my car in the lot, the tires crunching on the gravel. As I entered the room, the sight of several other hunters I had worked with greeted me. Skade's stern gaze fell upon me, his eyes piercing through my defenses.
"Now that Clay is here, let's get started," Skade finally spoke, his voice authoritative. I stood by the door. He continued, his words filling the room with a sense of urgency. "Last night, we conducted a test using a new form of wolfsbane at a local bar. We suspect the owner to be a wolf. The wolfsbane was discreetly mixed into the kegs of beer that were delivered. This test run of the product, while not as potent as the pure substance, proved to be undetectable to them in prior tests. The subjects experienced a significant weakening effect 6-8 hours after consumption, unable to transform into their beastly forms. Many of them also fell ill."
Skade's gaze turned towards me, his voice demanding an explanation. "Clay, why were you spotted at this very bar, carrying a girl out?”
“A girl from my classes, I gave her my number due to a group project. She called me drunk. When I learned she was out with an individual we had confirmed to be a werewolf I gave her a ride home, as I wanted to keep her safe.
"You were assigned to work with Liz at another party, yet it was reported to me that you abandoned her. Ignoring any form of communication, you left Liz vulnerable and isolated. You are well aware that our success depends on working together as a team, and abandoning your partner can jeopardize our cover. You need to shift your focus away from innocent bystanders. There was a hunter assigned to keep watch over the bar.” Skade's voice hit me his words laced with disappointment and authority.
"I apologize, it won't happen again," I replied.
"Was the test successful?" I inquired.
“From what we witnessed, it was...” Skade trailed off, his eyes fixed on Kyle another hunter.
"Kyle has some interesting intel," he said, his voice filled with anticipation. As Kyle stood up, a sense of urgency hung in the air.
"I received word from a few hunters who were able to venture into the werewolf realm," Kyle said.
"They reported that the Lycan princess has crossed into the human realm," he explained, his voice laced with caution. “They had little to go on regarding her appearance, except for the striking detail that her eyes were a vibrant shade of purple, like amethysts.” He explained.
Curiosity gripped me, and I couldn't help but ask, "Did they have any leads on her whereabouts?"
"Unfortunately, no," he sighed, the frustration evident in his voice. "We are working tirelessly to gather more information."
"If any of us are fortunate enough to locate her," Skade declared, his voice resonating with authority, "remember, she is to be captured, not killed."
"For this mission, I grant you permission to utilize our latest restraints and tranquilizers," he added.
"Clay," he said to me. "you are to come with me for a few hours. We managed to capture a rogue wolf. Maybe you will be the lucky one to get some information out of him." I nodded, my heart pounding in anticipation, knowing that his true reason for asking me was to speak with me alone. Once we were in his car, he locked the doors, creating a sense of secrecy and isolation.
"I'm used to you breaking and bending rules," he continued, his voice filled with concern, "but you are always focused. However, the past few days, you have acted distracted, avoiding your duties, and that is unlike you."
"To be honest," I confessed, the words heavy with the weight of truth, "Liz makes a horrible partner and is a huge distraction." He shook his head, a mixture of understanding and disapproval evident on his face.
"According to the reports I received," he began, his voice laced with caution, "you are involving yourself with a female who fits the description of the very one you were seen with last night. I understand that you are young and want to get out and have fun, but you choose this life. I'm not forcing you, Clay. Remember, getting involved with an innocent person can put them at risk. And as for Liz, we need to work with her group. They have been able to access the werewolf realm more than once. If you want your revenge to really take them down, she is your ticket."
I sighed. "I'll do as asked," I said, the words feeling heavy in the air around us.
"Good," he replied, a sense of relief evident in his voice. The car fell into silence, the only sound being the hum of the engine, as we drove for what felt like an eternity. Finally, we pulled up to a small, run-down building.
I entered the dimly lit building, the musty smell of damp concrete filling the air. Skade led me down a narrow hallway. He unlocked the door to a small room, revealing a young male werewolf chained to a chair. Despite the gag covering his mouth, his low growl reverberated through the room.
"This one was spotted near the suspected entrance to their realm," Skade explained, his voice carrying a hint of urgency. "Your task is to extract as much information as possible. I'll be with another prisoner down the hall."
As Skade left, I couldn't help but feel a mix of disgust and weariness. I glared at the werewolf, his appearance triggering a surge of anger within me. "You beasts may look human, but it sickens me," I spat, taking in his ragged appearance. "Listen, I've had a long day, and I'm not in the mood for games. Cooperate, and I might spare you some pain. Otherwise, I'll take out all my frustration on you."
With a swift motion, I removed his gag, allowing his growls to fill the room. "What's it going to be?" I demanded, my voice dripping with impatience.
"Why should I speak when you'll kill me anyway?" he snarled, defiance evident in his eyes.
"Perhaps we'll consider sparing your life, or maybe I'll grant you a quick death instead of the slow one your kind deserves," I retorted, my tone cold and unforgiving. "I don't even know what information you possess, but you can save yourself from further suffering."
"I'm an outcast, abandoned by my pack. I hold no valuable information," he growled, his voice laced with bitterness. "You claim to hunt monsters, but it's you who seeks power, exploiting our kind for your own gain."
I shook my head, dismissing his words. "Our only aim is to protect humanity from threats, while you beasts revel in killing," I stated, my gaze unwavering.
His laughter filled the room, mocking my words. "Look around, hunter. You're the true monster, resorting to violence against a defenseless captive," he taunted, provoking my anger even further.
Without hesitation, I approached a nearby table, grabbing a gleaming silver blade. As I dragged it across his skin, he growled in pain, his defiance undeterred. "If you're truly abandoned, then you won't care about the consequences for those who banished you. Tell me, how do we enter your realm?” I demanded.
Once again, he laughed, his voice filled with defiance. "You're right, human. I don't care. Humans cannot enter alone, but those who are welcome know the way. It's through witchcraft. If you seek an alternative, find a witch," he replied, his words dripping with a mix of bitterness and resignation.
"Now what do you say to some water," he said nonchalantly.
I tightened my grip on the gleaming silver blade. "Answer my questions, and water will be granted," I responded sternly.
"The Lycan princess, what do you know of her?" I inquired.
He paused for a moment, as if weighing his options. "She is not to be messed with," he replied.
"What does she look like?" I pressed, curiosity burning within me.
"Water first," he demanded, his voice tinged with desperation. I reluctantly obliged. As he took a sip, the sound of his parched throat swallowing echoed in the room. I withdrew the glass, denying him further relief.
"Have you heard of the Royal White wolf hunter?" he asked, his voice tinged with a hint of intrigue.
"I have, although it's said that none remain alive," I replied, my words carrying a sense of skepticism.
He smirked, his eyes glinting with hidden knowledge. "True, but the Lycan queen, she was once a Royal White wolf. Rumor has it that her daughter, the Lycan princess, inherited the same strength and power. She's not one to be taken lightly," he revealed.
I looked at the wolf again, its piercing eyes staring back at me. I struggled to keep my anger towards its kind under control, the frustration bubbling within me. I knew I had extracted all the information I could from it for the day. With a sigh, I tightly secured the gag around its mouth, muffling any further sound.
Stepping outside, the cool breeze brushed against my face, offering a momentary respite. I inhaled deeply. The air filled my lungs, a tangible calmness enveloping me. However, my clenched fists betrayed the turmoil within. It was unusual for me to leave a room without causing pain, but this wolf had spoken.
Skade emerged from the building, his shirt splattered with blood. His gaze lingered on me, curiosity evident in his eyes. I recounted the wolf's words to him, my voice carrying a sense of intrigue. He nodded, his lips curling into a sly smile. "Very interesting," he murmured. "If this is true, that lycan holds immense power. Power that, if obtained, could potentially bring down their realm. We need her. We must seize this opportunity."
"Tomorrow at 11pm," Skade continued, his voice filled with purpose. "Meet me at my location. An entrance to the werewolf realm has been discovered nearby, one that has long been abandoned. You, along with other hunters from our team and Liz, are to attempt entry. Our mission is to capture one of their residents for further questioning, to find a way directly into the lycan kingdom and dismantle their reign. Do not make me regret entrusting you with this leadership role."
I nodded, gratitude swelling within me for the trust he had finally placed in me. As we drove back to my car, I reached for my phone that I had left in his vehicle. Glancing at the screen, I let out a grumble. "She couldn't just call once and leave a message. No, she had to bombard me," I muttered. Opening several messages from Liz, her tone demanding an explanation for my absence, I quickly typed a response. "Report of a wolf last night. Sorry, won't leave again." With that, I scrolled through my messages and noticed one from Emma, her name illuminating the screen.
"Thanks again, Clay," the message read. I saw another message from Kris and Melody, inviting me to join them and her to work on the project.
A mix of conflicting emotions surged within me. Part of me wanted to push Emma away, to heed Skade's warning and not form this attachment. The rational part of my mind knew it was against the rules, yet the pull was too strong. I longed to know her more, to delve deeper into the connection we had started to build.
The prospect of working on the project together gave chance to observe her without raising any suspicion from Liz, a way to blend in and act as a normal student, as I had been ordered to.
In that moment, I couldn't help but feel a surge of warmth, a growing feeling that threatened to consume me. I knew I would have to push these emotions aside eventually, to maintain my focus and follow orders. But for now, I allowed myself to revel in the excitement and curiosity that came with getting to know her.
