Clay POV *30 minutes earlier* It was only a thirty minute wait for Liz's team to join us. I could see their large van approaching, its sleek design contrasting with our worn-out vehicle. As they stepped out, dressed in trendy body suits and masks, the sound of their confident footsteps reached my ears. Their appearance showed their desire to make a statement, unlike Skade, who didn't care about our attire as long as we completed the mission. I gazed into the dense woods, taking in the sight of the towering trees and their rustling leaves. The earthy scent of damp soil mixed with the subtle fragrance of pine filled the air. It heightened my senses, preparing me for the task at hand and proving to myself that I was ready for future assignments like this. Breaking my concentration, Liz approached me, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she greeted me with a mocking "hi hubby." The tone irritated me, but I had no choice but to bring her along as per orders. She tried to latch onto my arm, her fingertips lightly grazing my skin, but I gently pushed her off, not wanting to cause too much of a scene. "We will enter in two waves," I stated, my voice firm yet steady. "I will lead the first group, while the second stays back, ensuring that the entrance between realms is guarded. The second team is only to enter if we have been without communication for over an hour. Otherwise, their duty is to maintain their post here and intercept any werewolves in the area." "Liz ordered her team to bring the captives out," I observed, my eyes widening in surprise. My heart pounded in my chest as I watched them emerge, dragging a female werewolf and what appeared to be a young child. Liz approached the female captive with a smirk playing on her lips, her movements confident and calculated. She drew out her gun waving it around for a moment. Suddenly, Liz's gun was pointed towards the young wolf, and the female captive screamed beneath her gag. "We have a deal, wolf," she shouted. "Break the seal, and your child goes free. Fail, and he will take his last breath." I swiftly moved towards Liz, my hand gripping her arm tightly. I forced her to drop the gun. Anger surged within me, and I couldn't contain my words any longer. "What the f**k is wrong with you?" I snapped, my voice laced with fury. Liz met my gaze, her eyes filled with a mix of defiance and something else, something darker. "They're beasts, Clay," she responded. “He's a child," I yelled. "So what he is a wolf?" She countered, her voice filled with defiance, "Capture them fine," I replied, my voice steady yet tinged with anger, "but hold a gun up to the child again, and mine will be aimed at your head." The threat lingered in the air, a palpable sense of danger. Liz stood there, her eyes narrowing, and retorted, "Never saw you as weak, Clay. Maybe I was wrong." Her words carried a hint of regret. "I know what you want, Clay," she continued, her voice filled with conviction. "I've read your entire file. In fact, I knew all about you and knew I wanted you before you even came to this town." "You want revenge," she stated, her words swirling around us like a gust of wind. "These beasts are the ones that took your family. So, whose side are you on?" I sighed, the sound mingling with the rustle of leaves, and replied, "I will get my revenge. But I still will not stand by you pointing a gun at a child." The tension in the air seemed to thicken. "I am the leader of this mission," I asserted, my voice firm yet tinged with exhaustion. "So, you are to follow my commands. Don't let me remind you again." As we drew closer to our destination, the sight of the forest ahead astonished me. A hidden world lay beyond, concealed by an invisible barrier. The vibrant greens of the trees seemed to shimmer in the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. One of the hunters pushed the female wolf forward, and as her hands were freed, she held out a shaky hand. The sight of her trembling fingers was almost tangible, a visual representation of her fear. A small shimmer appeared in her hand, and we all stepped forward, walking through the barrier. The sensation was peculiar, like walking through a veil, as if the world around us shifted subtly. Although most of the forest looked the same, there were structures in the distance that had not been there before. "We are to gather information and capture those who may provide us answers," I instructed the hunters, my voice carrying a sense of purpose. "We are not to attack unless our lives are at risk." I led the hunters towards the structures, and as we drew closer, the growls of wolves filled the air. The menacing sound reverberated, blending with the rustling of leaves under our feet. I reached for my belt, the leather cool and smooth beneath my fingertips, and pulled off a special weapon we had created. It was a substance that put the wolves to sleep, yet had no effect on us humans. I nodded to a few of the hunters, their boots crunching softly on the forest floor, and we dropped the vials, letting the liquid spread around the area we were in. The wolves fell to the ground, their bodies limp and still. Our weapon worked, its effects visible through the sight of slumbering predators. With cautious steps, we moved forward, entering a side door in one of the buildings that creaked softly, the sound echoing through the empty hallway. My instructions Skade had given me to review stated that this door should be unlocked. This place was said to house important documents on all the pack and leader information. "We will split into two more groups now," I whispered. "I'll get the information with my men. Liz, you try to get a few captives for questioning," I ordered. As we made our way through we dropped a few smoke bombs, the acrid smell stinging our nostrils, creating a hazy screen that would slow the wolves down. I pulled down my special goggles, the cool plastic fitting snugly around my eyes, as we started to make our way through. The sound of scuffling feet, the echoes of grunts and growls, filled the air. Suddenly, my body was slammed against the wall, the impact jarring my bones. Pain radiated through me, the sensation sharp and intense. But I quickly recovered, the adrenaline coursing through my veins. With a swift motion, I punched the attacker off me, the sound of impact reverberating in the confined space. Sure, I may not be one of them, the wolves, but I was still strong and could hold my own. I pulled out two small blades, their weight comforting in my hands, the cool metal gleaming under the flickering lights. The sensation of readiness filled me, my fingers tightening around the handles, ready to defend myself. But as we drew toward what looked like an office, the building began to shake, and then there was a loud bang. The vibrations traveled through the floor and up my legs. "What the f**k," I snapped, my voice a mix of frustration and alarm, as I heard the sound of guns being fired. Soon, chaos broke loose, the sound of shattering glass and desperate shouts filling the air. The scent of gunpowder wafted towards me, its sharpness mingling with the musty odor of the building. Panic rose within me, the feeling of uncertainty and worry gripping my heart. What the hell did Liz's team do? Most attention was directed towards the source of the attack, as the werewolves we were fighting ran in that direction. I could see the chaos unfolding before me - the sight of the werewolves, their snarling faces and wild eyes. The air was filled with the sounds of growls and shouts, the clash of bodies and the shattering of glass. "Get what we came for," I sternly commanded the hunters standing beside me, the sound of a loud growl echoing outside. "You're missing all the action, Clay. Ready for another bang?" Liz's voice crackled through the earbud I had in, the sound slightly muffled. "Follow orders," I snapped back, my voice tinged with frustration. Another werewolf lunged at me, its claws swiping through the air. I could hear the claws slicing through the wind, creating a sharp whooshing sound. With quick reflexes, I evaded the attack. I swiftly grabbed hold of the werewolf and forcefully threw its body through a nearby window. The crash of shattering glass filled the room, the sound reverberating off the walls. "Oh, come on, Clay. Don't you want to have a little fun? You may have your orders, but I have some from my father as well: exterminate the wolves," Liz taunted, her laughter echoing in my ear. Another loud bang shook the building, causing the floor to vibrate beneath my feet. The screams that followed pierced through the madness, sending shivers down my spine. My breath caught in my throat as I realized that some of the screams belonged to children. Determined to protect the innocent, I swiftly got to my feet and sprinted towards the commotion. The scene before me was a horrifying sight. Men, now transformed into ferocious wolves, stood in front of what appeared to be terrified teenagers and children. The smell of fear hung heavy in the air, mingling with the scent of blood and sweat. Liz and her group of masked hunters began their relentless attack, their weapons slicing through the air with deadly precision. I knew I had to stop her. I charged towards her location, fighting off anyone who dared to impede my path. The ground shook once again as another explosion rocked the area. The deafening blast filled my ears, making it hard to focus. It was clear that Liz had strategically planted multiple bombs. The air was thick with the cacophony of piercing screams and menacing growls, assaulting my ears. Another bone-rattling impact against the wall sent shockwaves through my body, my skin stinging from the sharp claws of a snarling werewolf. Desperately, I tried to fend off the relentless onslaught, but it was futile as two more joined the attack. In a fleeting moment of respite, I dodged another vicious strike. My hand instinctively reached for my belt, searching for another weapon to defend myself. Suddenly, a searing pain shot through my arm as razor-sharp teeth sank into my flesh, accompanied by a thunderous growl echoing through the hall. My knees buckled beneath me, the cold, hard ground pressing against my limbs. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, the room was engulfed in a tense silence, broken only by the primal growl that reverberated through the air. A creature unlike any I had seen before entered, a large white wolf-like being that effortlessly transitioned between standing on all fours and upright on two legs. Was this a lycan? A large, imposing black wolf stood alongside this creature, as well as several smaller ones. As the wolves that had been attacking me ceased their assault, I noticed the presence of familiar faces as a few more wolves entered in human form. They were individuals from our town, suspected of being wolves. The building trembled once again, causing the white creature to emit a warning growl. Its gaze fixated on me, and though peculiar, there was something oddly familiar about it. Without hesitation, it dashed off, disappearing into the shadows. Two of the wolves that had been attacking me underwent a swift transformation, their bodies shifting into human form. My muscles ached from the relentless struggle, but I fought to regain control. "It's no use, human. Be thankful that your life is being spared for the chaos you have caused," one spat. Helplessly, my hands were bound, and I was forcefully pushed against yet another unforgiving wall. Eventually, I found myself in a dimly lit room, my companions from before already present. "Blindfold them," commanded one of the wolves, their voice laced with authority. The fabric pressed against my eyes, plunging me into darkness. As we were led away, I could sense the change in our surroundings after some time, signaling our return to the human realm. After a prolonged period of eerie silence, the sound of voices pierced through the air. It felt as if I was being forcefully shoved into a vehicle, the jolting motion exacerbating my discomfort. The voices grew louder as my senses sharpened. "The Alpha is on his way with the princess. She's been injured," one voice relayed urgently. The words reached my ears amidst the clamor. "The other group of hunters managed to escape. Whatever they unleashed is not good. We need to transport the captives to our pack lands quickly. We must extract as much information as possible from them," another voice spoke with a sense of urgency. "Wait, the Alpha requests that this one be transferred to his car," a different voice interjected. As I was pulled up, the rough handling caused me to wince, intensifying the pain coursing through my body. I was then unceremoniously thrust out of the vehicle, leaving a metallic taste of blood in my mouth. The sound of footsteps drew closer, a familiar voice emerging from the chaos. It had to be Ryan. "Put him in my van," Ryan's voice commanded. The words resonated with recognition. I was shuffled into another van, my restraints clicking into place against something solid. With a sudden jolt, the vehicle lurched forward, propelling me into a new phase of this harrowing ordeal. Time passed, and the van eventually came to a halt once more. "Where are the group of hunters that escaped?" a voice demanded, its tone filled with authority. I remained silent, the tension in the air palpable. Laughter erupted, a sharp contrast to the gravity of the situation. "I should end your life right now," the voice snarled menacingly. "Attacking an academy when we have caused no harm to you or your kind." The aggressor's anger hung heavily in the air. "Tell me where the hunters are now," he demanded again. A loud bang echoed through the space as he growled in frustration. "I'm keeping you alive due to a promise, but I will break it swiftly if you do not answer me," he threatened. "The very one who wanted to keep you safe is injured, all for you," he seethed. "Pups who can't even shift were harmed," he added with disdain. "It was not my plan to attack children. Those with me went against orders," I explained. "Where are they?" he demanded once more. "I don't know," I responded, my voice barely above a whisper. "Then tell me about the weapons you use. One is laced with some sort of poison. Do you have an antidote?" he asked, desperation evident in his voice. "Free me, and I'll hand it over," I bargained, mustering a hint of defiance. "Free me and the hunters who were captured alongside me. That is the price," I insisted, challenging his authority. In response, he growled menacingly, his frustration palpable. "Let's see what happens when you see the one who saved you," he snarled, a mix of anger and malice in his tone. "The one who ordered that we not kill you. The one who protected you from being torn apart by the academy's warriors." A hand gripped my head, yanking the cover back over my eyes. Suddenly, Ryan's piercing gaze met mine, causing my heart to momentarily stop. Someone lay motionless on the floor behind him, their identity obscured. As Ryan stepped aside, revealing the figure, my voice caught in my throat. "Emma," I choked out.
