Chapter 2
Alex sat staring while David ate, though he picked over everything at first. He had employed the fork only after Alex had demonstrated its use. The performance was like watching someone learn how to eat all over again. The act could be genuine or fake so in light of indecision he simply watched. David prodded things with the fork and in some instances a finger, as if each were a new and strange substance. While Alex was prepared to accept some of the foodstuffs were different to whatever the man more commonly knew, the examination seemed overly elaborate. He frowned most of the while, took little nips of the things he had speared, mouth curling up at one side in a smile when he apparently decided he liked what Alex had put on his plate.
