Alpha Ryan’s POV.
I glanced at my watch on my left wrist, 14 minutes, 30 seconds. The first set of competitors was still nowhere to be seen. This was a waste of my time.
As I adjusted in preparation to stand up, the crowd in front of me erupted in cheers. I squinted my eyes towards the opening ahead and indeed two men were emerging forward, one about ten feet away from the other.
“Just two,” I mumbled to myself.
“I told you you didn’t need a Gamma.” The brown-haired man chuckled from beside me.
I turned to face him with a bored expression on my face.
“What?” He frowned. “I’m just saying, you have me already. A Beta is enough.”
“I might just get a Delta, seeing as they’re two,” I said to spite him. He groaned and I smiled to myself.
The first man crossed the finish line and fell to his knees. I checked my watch again, 14 minutes, 56 seconds. Fair.
“What’s your name?” I asked the man, prompting him to get to his feet.
He staggered but managed to hold himself upright.
“Bruce.” He took a deep breath. “Bruce Davis.”
“Welcome on board, Davis.” I acknowledged him with a nod. “The Beta would put you through all you need to know.”
“Hey, why does it have to be me?” Taylor whined from his seat. “No offense kid.”
“Get your s**t together, Taylor,” I said and left the training field without as much another word.
I got into my car and started the engine just as I heard claps as other competitors approached the finish lines. I shook my head, registering the time. 20 minutes, 16 seconds. Five minutes, sixteen seconds late. How disgraceful.
My home was a modern house- a mansion- passed down from my father by tradition. It was also the pack house and provided shelter to some of my high-ranked workers.
I went straight to my study and brought out the files I was working on before leaving for the training field this morning. I was trying to sort out issues concerning neighboring packs that were under my rule when there was a knock on my office door.
“Go away, Taylor,” I said without looking up from the documents.
“Alpha.” The voice coughed from behind the door/
“Come in.” I raised my head to see my chief security officer shut the door behind him. “Any issue, Marlon?”
“Um,” he scratched the back of his head.
“Get on with it,” I said gruffly.
“Three wolves were detected spying at the border of the pack.” He said.
I furrowed my brows. That was a very minor issue, why was he informing me?
“And?”
“They ran off, we weren’t able to get to them.” I sighed. Was everyone incompetent nowadays? “They also left behind this letter.”
I took the crumpled paper he placed on my table and read it. It consisted of just three words.
“coming for you.”
As much as I wondered who was coming for me, I couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the threat. I was still in my fit of laughter when I caught some scribbled at the bottom, almost elligibly. DS.
“What's DS?” I questioned Marlon. “Dip s**t?”
“No idea, Alpha.” I caught the slight trace of a smile on his face.
“Alright, you may return to your duty. Thanks for this.” I raised the now crumpled-up letter at him.
He nodded and went out the door but before he could close it, Taylor slipped in.
“Did an apocalypse happen?” He asked as he took his seat across from me.
“I seriously don’t have time for your lame jokes.”
“Firstly, my jokes are not lame. Secondly, I’m talking about you, you’re smiling.”
I threw the paper at him and he caught it. I watched him as he read it.
“A threat?” I nodded.
“That’s crazy.” I know. He squinted at the bottom of the paper. “Who is IOS?”
“That’s DS, you fool.”
“Oh? I didn’t know you were gay, man.”
“Are you dumb, what are you talking about?” I frowned.
“He’s coming for you.” He waved the paper. “Daddy Stanley.”
Taylor broke into an uncontrollable laughter at the deepened scowl on my face.
“Get up and leave my office.”
“Chill, chill.” He began reaching for his back pocket amidst laughs. “Something came in for you today.”
“From who?”
“Don’t worry, it’s not from Daddy Stanley.” He winked at me. “It’s from the council, Mark sent it.”
The council was a board of werewolves that ruled our world. I was the king so of course, I headed it. Mark was my substitute, covering for me over there as I dealt with my pack matters here.
“What’s it about?”
“Rogue packs.” He said, sliding the paper toward me.
“I told him to deny all permits,” I said vaguely.
“Slow down, Ryan. You might want to see this.” Taylor pushed the paper closer.
I picked it up, scanning through its contents. Anger spread through my body in an instant.
“Is this one of your crazy jokes?”
“Nope, it’s real.”
I couldn’t believe my eyes, someone had to be selling out audacity in a neighboring market or something.
“Why the hell is a pack forming on our land? How did no one at the borders notice it?” I seethed.
“I ran it, it’s not on our land within the border but they can easily locate and access the border without being intercepted.” He adjusted uncomfortably on his seat.
“And for the past eight years? You mean to tell me we’ve been exposed to danger all these years?” I boomed.
“There have been no records of war or disturbance from that part. They have been living in peace.” He coughed the last part of his statement into his palms.
“They’re freaking rogues, Taylor. Get them out of my territory and get the guards to survey all other parts of the border and notify me of any other suspicious activities.”
“I have warriors on standby, they’re awaiting orders from you.”
I signed and leaned back in my seat.
“Send out word for them to evacuate the territory within the next 24 hours. If they resist, send the warriors in.”
“Sure, Alpha.” Taylor left my study.
I re-read the paper and shook my head. Crystal Stone pack headed by Alpha Diane. Quite a feminine name for an Alpha, I thought, crumbling the paper and shooting it into the bin.
“Run the initials, DS,” I said into the line as soon as the person on the other end picked up and hung up after their response.
I need to know what I’m dealing with if these spies are somehow connected to this rogue pack.
