Chapter Ten

“Quietly.” Arran stood with his back to the door, keeping it open for us as I drew Blair through it, my arm right around her shoulders. Cloaks covered us from head to toe so we wouldn’t be recognised but there was no doubt other alphas would be able to smell her if they got to close. And then Hades would have no choice to kill them. “Quickly now.” Hades voice was urgent, need making his voice thick. She was so close to her heat now it was hard to concentrate. And if he had this much trouble controlling himself others would feel it as well. Others like Arran. Hades eyes narrowed but he forced his stance to relax. The young commanders posture was stiff but he wasn’t sneaking glances. His eyes were set dead ahead. No matter his inner struggle he was doing his job. And that today was getting Hades and his mate to the safety of Ellands city apartment. His country one would have been better but with Blair’s old master still sniffing round heading out of the city would mean disaster. “Half.” Arrans whisper was sudden, a hiss of air and Hades drew Blair into the shadows, his bulk hiding her from anyone’s view. She was his prize , no one else’s. Hades tensed, he didn’t want to fight his own people but he would if he had too. His own rules be damned. “Go.” Arran was motioning wildly for them to take a sharp left down one of the narrow alleys. “Stay to the shadows , and just go.” “There’s an omega here.” The voice carried. “I can smell her.” “I won’t leave you to deal with this alone Arran.” Hades fists bunched to his sides. “Oh please Hades , this is what I liv….” His voice trailed off as three men stepped into view and for a second the two groups stared at each other from across the street. Hades didn’t recognise any of them, although they were definitely Alphas. Their swirling blue marks gave them away. Beserkers. “Omega.” One of the newcomers hissed. “And about to…” “She isn’t for you.” Arrans stance was wide as he turned , his body shielding Blair from view and with her his king. “Who is she…” “She isn’t claimed. What are you doing with her? Is she new? Can we at least take a look?” The first one was talking in a rush. “She is claimed.” “By you?” Arran barked out a laugh. His easy confidence had fooled more than one person to underestimate him Hades was sure of it. “No not by me, by someone much more important. We are just the delivery guys.” He shrugged his shoulders. As if it was just another daily job. “Yeah seems only the cream of society are getting the Omegas these days. Wasn’t like that with the old king. Then if you won the bid the omega was yours.” The first alpha spoke again his voice carrying easy. “Those were the days.” Another called our and Arrans fake laugh filled the silence that stretched between them all. “Don’t you prefer it this way?” Hades voice was brittle. “Wouldn’t you want to find your actual mate?” More laughter. “That’s nothing but a myth. Who here has ever found their true mate? The old ones say they have but what do they know? And that crazy fool Ellands? He is pretty much Mated to a corpse and it’s ruined him.” A shake of shaggy blue hair. “No I don’t want to find a mate . I don’t want to feel powerless for a woman.” Hades silver eyes narrowed as the man stepped into the road “Although I might make an exception for a golden haired Omega.”another step closer and Hades growl echoed through the empty street. He stepped forward , pushing Blair behind him. She stumbled with a cry, the cloak falling open. Hades growl was answered by several others. “The big one want her for himself?” “She is not to be touched by the likes of you.” His voice was barely audiable . How long had it been since he had been in an honest to the stars street brawl? Too long. Way back when he and Elland were little more than tear away kids. Back when life had been simpler. Hades rolled his shoulders, an almost feral grin splitting his face. He glanced over at Arrans amused face. The younger man was itching for a fight as well. “Ohh I see, unfortunately for you I don’t see or sense any mark on her. So it’s first come first served” Hades hand clenched into a fist. “You want her for yourself big man?” The taunting continued. And then his eyes fell on Blair. “You just wait right there pretty, as soon as I get rid of your escort I will be right with you and unlike these I will claim you. You are just the kind of omega I like. Soft and sweet. No one can dissolve the mark once it has been given.” Behind him, Hades felt Blair rise unsteadily to her feet. But he didn’t turn to her. His eyes never left the man who had just said he would claim her. He didn’t blink. “Stay behind …” He didn’t even get to finish before she answered, her small hot hand on his shoulder. “I won’t move.” Hades heart leapt, that one small touch. The first time she had touched him first. Sure he had touched her and she had allowed it but this new smallest of touchest was all her idea. “Oh come on now pretty, there’s more than the big brute to choose from? Why don’t you come over here and I can show you?” “No thank you.” Blair’s voice was right behind him, the whisper of it warm agains his neck. “I am …” She faltered . Was she about to say she was claimed by another? Hades hoped so. “I don’t need your permission. One way or another my c**k is going to force on your estrus.” Hades roared , his leap covering the ground between them as he battered into the surprised group. They were alphas, Beserkers from the planet Auria but he was Hades. They were no match for him. “Stay.” Arran threw over his shoulder as he joined the scuffle with a grin on his face.
