"Tell Matt to hold his horses, or I'll tell Dad he sneaked out to that club last month," I reply. "You wouldn't, dear sis!" Matthew chimes in. "Try me." I get out of bed and stretch—it's the first day of junior year. I open my closet, wondering what to wear. "Matthew, I need your help!" I call out. "I'm here! Where's the danger?" He bursts into my room with a bat. Rolling my eyes, I say, "Fashion emergency." "Oh, in that case," he walks over to my closet, "here," handing me high-waisted ripped jeans, a crop top, and brown boots. "Thanks!" "You're welcome. Now hurry up; I need to see what fresh meat we have this year," he pushes me toward the bathroom. "You're such a player," I remark. "But you still love me, sis," he ruffles my hair. He's the captain of the soccer team and avoids dating after Claire dumped him last year. ** "Did you know Claire's back?" Mason asks as we get into Matthew's car. "What?" "Yeah, last semester she said she wasn't coming back," he replies. "I just hope she doesn't make a move on Asher," I grumble. When she dumped my brother, rumors circulated that she was interested in Asher. "If she does, Alyssa will put her in her place," Matthew laughs. Alyssa Fraser, my friend for two years, disliked Claire from the start when she bragged about her mother's clothing line. Matthew picks up Asher, who sits next to me in the back seat. "What's up, troublemakers? Any pranks today?" He smiles, his blonde hair and green eyes sparkling with mischief. "Sorry, man, not today, but tomorrow for sure," Matt smirks in the rearview mirror. "So Mia, how was your summer?" Asher asks. "You saw me almost every day for the past month," I laugh and push him. "Then it should be great," he winks, making my heart skip a beat. "Hey, no flirting with my sister when I'm around," Mason growls. "Chill, she knows I'm just playing," Asher grins. "Claire is back," I whisper. "What?!" he exclaims, and Matthew swerves into the wrong lane before correcting himself. "What the heck, man?" "Sorry, I was surprised. Why is she back?" "I couldn't care less, but if she tries anything with you, Matt, or Sam, I'll—" "Relax, tiger," Asher laughs. "If she makes a move on Alec, Alyssa will have her head too," Matt adds. "Yeah, no doubt." ___ "Hey guys," I greet my friends hanging around Derek's jeep. "Hey, b***h! I missed you!" Ally shrieks, hugging me. "I missed you too," I chuckle, "and you dyed your hair?" "Yeah, wanted a new look," she laughs, flicking her new platinum blonde hair. "Don't forget about me, hoes!" Gloria screams, emerging from her father's vehicle. "Hello, babe," Alec smirks at me, and I roll my eyes. "What do you want, Ace?" "Why, you of course?" He winks, and Mason glares at him. "Never." "You'll change your mind," he insists, then we hug. "We need to pull a prank soon," he says. "Of course, people need to know we're back," I laugh. "Sorry I'm late," Sam says. "Sammy!" Alyssa squeals, running to him, wrapping her legs around his waist and kissing him. Yep, they're together. "You shameless people," Matt snaps, covering my eyes. I remove his hand and glare, "I'm not 11 anymore." "But I can't have you watching rated things." "Ally, chill; you saw him just Friday," Derek sighs, her older brother and a senior. "Hey, deer, how does it feel to be a senior?" I ask. "Great! In nine months, I'm out of here. Hasta la vista, baby." "Did you hear Claire's back?" Gloria announces. "Oh yeah, that b***h. I heard she slept around a lot this summer," Alyssa says as she and Sam join us. "We all know she was secretly a hooker," Gloria adds, flicking her auburn hair. "Here she comes now," Mason says, tilting his head toward the road. We turn around to see Claire waving at people as she walks by, wearing a tight skirt and crop top, heels, and heavy makeup. “Did she get a boob job to make them bigger?” Alyssa frowns. “True,” I agree. They weren’t that big last semester. When her gaze meets mine, we glare at each other. “Last night was fun, Derek!” she shouts. “b***h, you wish you could get him!” Gloria retorts. “I don’t wish; I know I will, unlike you,” Alyssa snaps back. “You’re not getting my brother. You’ll be dead before you can touch him,” Alyssa warns. “Whatever. Mia, be ready for when I take your captain position this year,” Gloria smirks. “You wish! If you think you can take it just to get back at my brother, you’re wrong!” She storms off, and we all laugh. “Look, fresh meat! Let’s give them the traditional welcome,” Alec smirks, pointing to a group of guys who look scared. “Be easy on them,” I remind the group. “We got this, sis,” Mason ruffles my hair before they approach the guys. “So, girls, how was your summer?” I smile. “It was great! I went to my grandmother's house in Canada and had a summer romance,” Gloria beams. “Did you get naughty?” Ally winks. “No, we’re not you and Sam,” Gloria rolls her eyes, and I laugh. “Whatever,” Ally mutters. “Let’s go get our timetable,” I suggest, and we head inside, people parting for us as we pass. Boys check us out, but they know better than to approach me with Matthew and Mason around. “This year should be different. Maybe you should start dating, Mia,” Ally suggests. “But guys are scared to ask me out,” I roll my eyes. “But Alec isn’t,” she points out. “He’s just my friend, Ally.” “What about Asher?” Gloria proposes. I blush, “He doesn’t know I like him like that.” “Then you should tell him before it’s too late,” Ally urges. “But I’m afraid he’ll reject me, and it will ruin our friendship,” I sigh. “Stop overthinking it.” “But I—” I bump into someone. “Sorry,” the red-brown-haired girl says, looking down. “It’s okay,” I move aside for her to pass. “I can’t tell him. I need to know if he feels the same way first.” **** “Welcome back! How was your summer?” my homeroom teacher asks excitedly. People respond with grumbles and a few “alrights.” “Okay, I’m Mr. Allen, your homeroom teacher for the year,” he introduces himself. “He’s hot,” Ally whispers from behind me, and I roll my eyes. He looks about ten years older than us, with dark brown hair and bright brown eyes. “He’s alright,” I shrug. “What is Mrs. Flirty gossiping about now?” Asher whispers beside me. “How hot our teacher is,” Ally says loudly. “Thank you, Miss Fraser,” Mr. Allen grins, and she turns red, making us laugh. A girl walks in, “Is this the homeroom?” she asks shyly. “Yes, and you are?” “Crystal Cole, I’m new,” she replies. She’s the same red-brown-haired girl I bumped into earlier. Guys are already checking her out; she’s pretty, no doubt. “Well, Crystal, I’m Mr. Allen,” he says. “You can take a seat next to… um… her,” he points to me. She looks at me and nods. “Hey, I’m Mia, and this is my best friend, Asher,” I introduce myself. “Sup?” Asher nods. “Nice to meet you,” she replies. “Alright, class, today—” “Your king has arrived!” Matthew announces, bursting into the room. I roll my eyes. “Who are you?” “I’m the king, also team captain,” he replies. “You’re not on my roster,” Mr. Allen frowns at his book. “Actually, yes,” Matt points out, “see Matthew West.” “Ah, yes, the troublemaker. I’ve heard so much about you.” “Hope it’s good things,” Matt says, winking at me as he walks past my desk and sits next to Ally. “What’s up, Ally?” “As I was saying, we’ll be doing something different this year. The principal thought it wise to have a project,” he announces, and we all groan. “This project will be a little different. You’ll have a partner, but it’s not an ordinary project; it’s a baby project.” “What?!” ____________________________
