The car lurched abruptly as its rear tires disintegrated. Rick fought the skid and managed to keep the car upright, but a frightened glance through the windshield showed Alice that they were spinning out of control. “Not again!” she cried remembering at last how they had shot out the tires on the cab earlier. The car canted into the ditch, and she was thrown roughly against the door. The door popped open and spilled her into the darkness. She rolled to her knees and used the open door for cover as she fired back at the ambulance. The ambulance shot past them, braking into a sliding U turn, its tires crying. On the other side of the car, Rick tried to open his door, but gravity slammed it shut again. He tried once more and forced it open at last. He rolled out and clear. It seemed to Alic
