Leslie POV
□□□
“Friends.
We have known each other since ten years”.
.
.
.
I add, as I hide the fact by a simple lie but stating the truth.
We have known each other since I was ten.
But the kid gets into full detective mode as he questions me
“Oh?
But I haven't seen you around”
.
.
.
“Oh?
But I haven't seen you around”
The kid eyes gets suspicious
And I shrug
These kids are unimaginable.
When I was ten, I would have given you my home address if you would ask the supermarket address
.
.
.
“You know what Yente?
Your mother is looking for you.
And yeah, I haven't been around.
But I got to meet Quinton, immediately.
It's an emergency
And I don't need you to tell me anything.
I'm capable of finding where he is,”
I speak out, with an anger behind my voice.
Not letting the kid take advantage over me!
"Fine.
I'll tell you where he is.
But one, you will tell my mom you didn't find me and two, what will I get in return?"
The kids ask, coming straight to the little deal he wants to put forward.
"What will I get in return?"
"What do you want?" I ask him, narrowing my eyes at his direction.
Maybe I should have called that lady along with me, then he would have shut his little mouth.
Little brat, how dare him?
First, he thinks I'm here to hit on him.
And now he is negotiating a deal with me
"Five hundred dollars" he speaks out, with a pure confidence in his voice
And I gasp
"Excuse me? " I scoff, seeing his guts.
Where do these kids come from?
Like Mars?
He opens his mouth to negotiate, but I beat him to it,
"A Hundred dollars.
One more word from your mouth, you get nothing, and I'm on my way, back "
I speak out, taking the control of the situation.
I'm a b***h, kiddo,
Don't try to play with me.
I'm a big player, myself
"Fine.
Give me the money first" He puts his hand out rolling his eyes at me
And shrugging at myself I walk towards my car to grab my wallet.
This kid can go to places, like big places.
He has some pure talents which is getting my nerves today
Grabbing the money from my wallet I shove it in is hands, roughly.
"He's on the highway.
Maybe searching for those wild dogs" the kid hides the money inside his pants carefully, as he answers my question.
"Highway?" I arch a brow,
I have no idea how to get there and what did he say?
Did I hear him right?
Dogs?
"Yup.
He got some call and he left.
He told he will be back soon" the kid nods as he speaks, resonating his earlier statement.
"Okay kiddo.
You better get into my car, and you will show me exactly where he is"
I cross my arms, as I order Yente
Making sure he will say no.
"What if you are a child kidnapper?"
Yente questions, as he eyes at my car.
It's Range Rover, and it's the newest edition.
"Seriously?" I ask him.
He got to be kidding me right now,
"Fine, I'll go with you.
But one condition" he hops on to the front passenger seat, as I had left it open to grab my wallet.
Manner less dude
"No conditions.
Zip it up, man.
I just gave you a hundred dollars"
I grit out, as I walk over to the car and hop on to the driver's seat as I start my car.
Where have I got myself?
"You got to take the u-turn" the kid states as he grabs my sunglasses
And my jaw falls down.
He is so handsy.
But not wanting to fight with this kid, I keep my mouth shut as we get back on the road.
UFF...
Here I come…
×××××××××××××××××××××××××
I pull my car over on the side of the byroad , as I see a few cars coming up and down the road which is connected to the highway.
"Seriously Yente.
If I don't find Quinton, I'm breaking your teeth"
I threaten him, as he gets down.
His eyes searching, and his hands go straight as he points out,
"There he is.
I told you, he will be chasing those wild dogs"
He speaks out with an excitement behind his voice.
And I take a step forward, as my heart starts to beat heavy.
Quinton….
He's out there.
A dog ,which looks like the local one, is running on the highway not caring about the cars.
It looks scared and frightened
And I see him running behind the dog.
He is wearing blue ripped pants.
A sleeveless hood which has put his biceps on display.
And damn, his blonde hair is grown which flies at the moment has he gets between the cars.
For a second I see nothing but him, then I realize
.
.
.
Oh my god.
Is he out of his mind?
He can get to an accident, hurt himself.
And worst, die out there
"Is he out of his mind" I scream out, loud.
"He does this every time"
Yente shrugs, with no fear in his eyes as he just watches Quinton who successfully grabs the dog which looks like it's scared and poor little thing, I feel pity for it.
The minute he wraps his hand around the wild dog, he gets on his knee, falling on to the ground.
And the car on the other end stops the very second.
I try hard not to scream out at the moment, as I bite down my lips.
Shaking
My heart just skips a beat because he had no idea about the car which could have hit him if driver was little taken back.
His eyes look focused on the dog, which looks like it's shaking, and he rubs his hands over it's back consoling the poor dog.
He runs his hand down the dog, as he whispers something in its ears.
And I notice the way his lips curl up in a small smile as he talks with the dog.
Like I have never seen that smile, even during those Christmas dinners where we used to sit opposite to each other.
I'm not going to lie, the only reason I looked forward to Christmas was him.
Because it's like my dad and his mom on the other side who looked so happy together.
And then me, who felt so happy to just see him from far.
I thought, as days go by my crush will fade away.
But why is my heart feeling such a pain?
Like I can feel the pain all over my chest, my stomach crunching.
My knees feel weak, as I just witnessed the worst.
Something bad could have happened to him.
Right?
"Quinton.
You got a visitor"
Yente screams on top of his lungs, and I practically want to go and bury myself under the ground as his eyes looks up hearing Yente's voice.
His green eyes look too far.
He hasn't changed a bit even though it's been three years.
He has got that beard and that long hair which makes him look wild.
His face goes still like he can recognize me.
And gets back on his step, as he starts walking towards us.
I swallow the lump in my throat, it feels like my heart is lost.
My body feels on fire as I get to see his features more clear, as he walks straight to me.
And then our eyes lock.
I don't blink, neither does he.
His lips look parched, and I lick my lips nervously.
I hear Yente murmuring something as he runs towards Quinton and grabs the dog from his arms.
And I notice his hand which has got no ring.
So he isn't married.
But again, why am I thinking that?
I shake my head, as I look away.
No, I force myself to look away, as I look back at my car, back at Yente who is petting the dog like I'm looking everywhere.
And then I feel him too close.
His musky scent, hits my face proving the closeness.
So I turn around, facing him.
My eyes still, taking the control back.
"Hi"
I start the conversation
And he gives me a firm nod which just frustrates me.
I just want to hear his voice.
"That was scary"
I speak out, no I ramble out my words
And this time I find no reaction but his curious eyes on me like finding something that has been lost.
"My father died"
I blurt out my words and then his eyes flickers.
"We are having a small memorial to honor his life.
And I came to here to take you along with me.
Your presence will definitely matter for us.
It will matter for me.
I want you there with us" I pick up the courage as I speak out trying hard not to shiver.
For one, it's still hard to realize that my dad's not going to be there when I go back home.
For two, my crush on this man isn't dead.
It's still breathing, very much alive, that's put my soul on fire.
it's like the first day I saw him and my heart skipped a beat.
Now ,after seeing him run on a highway, the fear of something would happen.
Quinton,....... you are still my first crush who had put my heart on fire.
Even after years ,it's still beating for ya.....
