It flashed through her mind that the money and jewellery that she had brought with her were upstairs, but at the moment that was immaterial. What was important was that she should escape before she was forced to marry the Marquis for she recognised that her uncle was not speaking lightly. When she had run away last night from his house in Grosvenor Square, she had known that nothing she could say and no pleading or begging for mercy would prevent him from marrying her to Sir Mortimer Forstrath.
