As soon as Phoebe walked out of the diner after her shift was over, she saw Dante waiting in the exact same spot he had been standing at all morning. She crossed the street and walked over to him and leaned against the wall like he was.
"I don't know whether to be flattered or offended that you have been here all morning. Did you think I wasn't coming like we agreed?" she asked as he finally turned to look at her.
"No, I was concerned about you welfare. If it is discovered what you are, it could cause a Civil War among the Vampires. Revealing you will have to be done carefully and cautiously if we are to disrupt as little as possible." Dante told her. "There will even be those that feel it is best to just get rid of you, and will make the attempt to kill you before you get stronger."
Phoebe was surprised by this statement, and shook her head as she pushed off from the wall. "Well since you are here already, let's go get these test done. I would like the results now that you have offered." she said as he repeated the process and used the key fob to unlock the car in front of them before he opened the door for her.
The drive through the city and out into the country was short, because the car he had was extremely fast. Not once however did she feel unsafe, and she knew somehow that he was taking her to a nearby Vampire Coven for the test to be performed at.
"So, can I ask a personal question or two." she asked him while he drove.
"Sure." he said keeping his attention on flying past the cars that seemed like they were standing still.
"Why are you helping me?" she asked remembering what he had said last night.
Duncan sighed as he looked af her for a moment and decided to slow down. "It is complicated, but the short answer is I know what it is like to be on my own. Not know where you go next, or how you survive a past you wish you could forget. When I saw you in the club, and could smell the terror you were going through as the blood burn began, I knew you had no idea what was going on. I decided that I would help you any way I could, no matter how it turned out. I am just glad I didn't have to kill you on the spot." he said with a smile as she laughed.
"You may have found that mlre difficult than you think pretty boy. I am not some pushover that can't defend herself." Phoebe replied to him with a smile as he chuckled.
"We will have to see about that one of these days, but I am not as young as I look." he told her with a smile of his own.
Phoebe looked at him, and somehow knew he wasn't lying about that. "How old are you?" she asked him.
He looked at her with a smile and decided to play with her. "Multiply your age by 100 and you would be getting close. The answer is, I am not entirely sure which year I was born in, as back than it wasn't as important." he told her as he began slowing down. "Would you like a tour of the Coven before we begin the testing? That way if you decide to join us you will atleast know a few people."
Phoebe was nervous about this part, as she didn't know how competitive the Covens were about recruiting people like her. "How many Covens are in this area?" she asked him.
"Mine is the only Coven within 100 miles, but because of the school there are probably 25 safe houses from other Covens in the city." he replied easily as if he knew it all by heart.
"What is the difference between a Coven and a Safe House?" she asked genuinely curious as they turned into what looked like a residential development surrounded by farm country. It was clear to live here you had to have a bit of money, and she smiled as she had received nearly a million dollars in scholarships just for this first semester, and a total of 2.4 million for her first year.
"A Coven is where we gather for safety in numbers, but the members have their own houses. A safe house is a large estate for those who are travelling away from the Coven for whatever reason. There are not individual houses for everyone but a massive house with rooms and suites depending on your rank within the Coven." he told her as they drove through the gate into the community and she could see a massive mansion in the center of it that stood above everything else.
"Bit conspicuous don't you think?" she asked as she pointed to it.
"Actually no, this entire community is Vampires. So everyone you meet here will be a Vampire or subclass thereof." he told her with a smile.
"So you guys do allow some of the subclasses to live?" she asked him with a hint of a smile.
"Yes, those that can keep control of themselves in the human world. Unlike what the Human stories say, some of them can be really useful in our protection."
"Dhampir's are special case though aren't they? Because most are raised to be Vampire Hunters?" she asked him.
He sighed as he pulled to a stop in a little shopping District. "Mostly, yes. 90 percent of Dhanmpir's have something against us, and because of their abilities can kill us easily if they get the drop on us. There have been a few however that have assimilated into the Vampire World, and are what we call Hunter Killer's. Most are tasked with the mission of finding the Dhampir Hunters and killing them for their crimes against the Vampire World." he told her honestly.
"So where does that leave me, because I do not wish to be either of those things?" she asked him.
"For now, it leaves you going to school and living your life. As I said, as part of my Coven we can offer you some protection. I am not saying you will never have to kill another Dhampir, because if you consume blood they will consider you little more than a Vampire. They have been known to get into the school, and cause havoc until they can be caught and dealt with." Dante told her before he got out and walked around to open her door as he began the tour of the Coven.
It was 2 hours later when he lead her into a clinic that was inside the community, and it was clear they knew exactly who he was as he lead her into the back where a state of the art lab was set up. She had learned alot about the Vampires, including the fact that they had made synthetic blood that would date there hunger 200 years before humans even knew what technology was. They hadn't hunted Humans since, as it was to much of a giveaway to the Hunters who although small in number, still survived and used their skills and knowledge to cause grief in the Vampire World.
She was starting to get nervous when he turned into an office, until she saw who was sitting behind the desk.
"No way, this is the Coven you are in?" Phoebe squealed as she saw Jessica who looked at her with a smile.
"Sure is beautiful, should we get this party started now?" she asked as she closed the door.
"What are you going to do?" Phoebe asked her making Jessica laugh.
"Take some blood and run some tests." Jessica said with a smile as she got the needle and two tubes out that looked just like what the Wolves and Humans used as well.
Phoebe didn't feel a thing as Jessica was very skilled at what she did, and made her hold the cotton ball on the puncture site for a few seconds.
"Now Lord Dante, what exact test do you want me to run?" Jessica asked him as she walked into the lab.
"Species typing, Paternity, and Mitochondrial Analysis." Dante said evenly as Pgoebe looked at him.
"Lord?" she asked as he smiled.
"I did say MY Coven." he said while Jessica laughed a bit.
"Don't worry Phoeb's, as much as he thinks he is in charge he barely does anything around here." Jessica said making Phoebe laugh as he opened his mouth in shock.
Jessica worked for a few minutes before she looked at Dante. "Who are we running Paternity against?" she asked him seriously.
"Marcus." he said as Phoebe could sense his anger and her surprise before they both covered it quickly.
"His blood profile is in the system, so it will only take a few minutes. The interesting part is she is not quite a Dhampir." Jessica said as the printer next to her began printing.
"What do you mean?" Dante asked her.
"Well technically a Dhampir is half Vampire half Human. Phoebe here is three quarters Vampire, one quarter Human." Jessica said handing him the printout that showed it. "I would guess at some point in history her mother had a Vampire Ancestor, and those genes lay dormant until she was impregnated by a Vampire."
"What does that mean?" Phoebe asked the two of them.
"Not sure, it has never happened before. Dhampir's are rare, as most men cannot handle the bloodlust long enough to actually conceive a child with a Human woman. And never before have they done so with a woman who had dormant Vampire Gene's. You likely still have none of our weaknesses, but you might have even more of our strengths or abilities than a normal Dhampir would." Jessica said as another test finished and she looked at it before her eyes went wide."Dante, you need to look at this." Phoebe could feel her shock before she heard what she was thinking. 'Mitochondrial Link to the first Queen Lilith.'
"Hey, that's my Vampires name." Phoebe said. ot realizing she had said it out loud.
"What is your Vampires name?" Jessica asked looking at her.
"Lilith, that is what she said anyway." Phoebe said as both Dante and Jessica looked at her.
"How can you see that though?" Dante asked her as she was standing behind the monitor.
"Jessica said it." Phoebe said defensive. "Mitochondrial Link to the first Vampire Queen Lilith." she quoted.
Jessica looked at him and smiled. "Seems telepathy is definitely one of her skills." she said before turning to Phoebe. "I didn't say it, I thought it. What else can you do?" she asked curiously.
Phoebe was stunned as she sat down. "Is it normal to be able to sense the emotions of other Vampires?" she asked both of them.
They both laughed and shook their heads no. "Not even a little bit." Jessica said as the final test dinged. "Positive for Paternity. So I guess the question is, is she a queen?" Jessica asked looking at Dante who nodded.
"The first Dhampir Queen, and I have no clue what it means." he said as he turned to look at Phoebe.
