I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, Jimmy," I said, flipping him off. "I'm serious, Alex. This is your last warning. Vandalism is against the law." "It's not my fault I caught my backstabbing best friend with my boyfriend. Luckily, they didn't see me," I growled. "But getting revenge by vandalizing their vehicles?" he raised an eyebrow. "They're lucky I didn't do more," I scoffed. "Alex Mae James!" my mom shouted as she entered and signed my release papers. "Hey, Mommy," I smiled, batting my eyelashes as she glared at me. "Thank you, Jim. You're in big trouble, young lady," she snarled as we left the station and got into her car. "I never thought you'd get arrested before me, Alex," my brother Aiden smirked. "Shut up," I snapped. He ran his hand through his blonde hair, continuing to text. Aiden and his twin sister, Ally, inherited all of Mom's good traits: blonde hair and bright blue eyes. I, on the other hand, got Dad's traits: wavy sandy brown hair, green eyes, and I’m 5'7" at 16. "What am I going to do with you, Alex?" Mom sighed as she started the car. "Mom, we need to stop at Walmart. Remember, Ally wants to make her famous brownies tomorrow," Aiden reminded her. "Of course, and Alex, you're grounded." Nothing changes; I get in trouble and grounded for a week or two, depending on how bad it is. *** Our house is a two-story with green paint, a backyard pool, a small soccer practice field for Aiden and Julian, a hot tub, six rooms each with their own bathroom, a laundry room, and Dad's man cave where he, his brother, Aiden, and our cousin Elliot hang out. I’m the only one in the family without a talent. Aiden and our little brother Julian, age thirteen, play soccer, get straight B's, and do fencing. Ally bakes, is a straight-A student, choreographs dances for the cheer team, and teaches kids to dance. Kayla, our eleven-year-old sister, wants to follow in Mom's footsteps and become a doctor. I can’t play soccer, cheer, or bake, but Grandma says I just haven’t found my talent yet. "What did she get into this time?" Ally crossed her arms when we got inside. She wore shorts and a tank top, her hair in a messy bun. "Vandalism," Aiden replied, texting as he went upstairs. "Alex, you need to control yourself. You'll be a senior next year," she sighed. "Don't you want to get into a good college?" "With my grades and record? I doubt any college will take me. Besides, I had my reasons for getting arrested." "Talk to me, little sis," she said, sitting on the stairs and patting the spot next to her. "I caught Olivia and Christian making out on his bed. He was about to unhook her b*a, but I left before they saw me," I sniffed. "I knew I couldn't trust her once Christian came into the picture last year," she hissed. "Don't worry; I'll make sure she's off the team when school starts." She hugged me. "Thanks, sis," I smiled. "Where are Julian and Kayla?" "Outside in the back, swimming." I was the only one in the house who had to share a room, and I’m the middle child. "Alex, get in here now!" Dad demanded from his study. Uh oh. I strolled into his study. "Yes?" He glared at me. "Have a seat," he ordered. I sat down as he held up my report card. "Three D's, Alex. You've dropped from C to D, and you have detention every week!" he exclaimed. I winced. "This is getting out of hand," he sighed. "I have no choice but to send you to summer school." "What?! Bu-" "No buts. I know you were supposed to spend some days in Miami, but that's not happening," he cut me off. "So, summer school at my school?" "No, I'll talk to your mother about it and let you know. Also, no television for the rest of the week." "Fine," I snapped, leaving and slamming the door behind me. I went to my room, locked the door, and fell on my bed as tears came. I wouldn’t forgive Christian and Olivia for this. They hadn’t seen the last of me. ____ "We have made a decision," Dad announced at breakfast. "What?" Aiden looked up. "Alex will be going to summer school, but it will be a boarding school." I choked on my tea. "What?!" I exclaimed as Julian snickered. "I think it's best, Alex. That way, you won't get into much trouble," Mom reasoned. "That's so unfair! I'm not even going to be home for July 4th!" I protested. "Too bad," Julian said, and I glared at him. "You'll be free for July 4th, but other than that, you'll be on campus until a week before school starts," Dad explained. "Which boarding school will it be? An all-girls school? Mixed?" My parents exchanged glances. "It's going to be an all-boys school," Mom answered, and my siblings stared at her in shock. "What? No way! I'm not letting my sister go there!" Aiden's protective instincts kicked in. "We already registered her," Dad said. "Elliot will be going too, so he can keep an eye on her." Kayla snorted. "He can barely look after me and Julian. What makes you think he can handle Alex, who causes more trouble than both of us combined?" "Have some faith in your cousin. Alex, you'll leave Friday for orientation and be back on campus Sunday," Mom said. "But why do I have to go to an all-boys school? Aiden and Julian haven't even set foot in one!" I whined. "It's the only boarding school near the city, and your uncle and I went there, so it's not bad," Dad said. "Fine, I'm going to start packing," I shot back, heading upstairs. "Also, your uniform will be delivered soon," Mom called after me. Great, I caught my ex-best friend and boyfriend hooking up and found out I'm being shipped off to boarding school for the summer—all on the same day. This is one summer I am dreading. My phone buzzed on the nightstand. Olivia (backstabber): My father took pity, so you don't have to pay for the damage you caused. Me: f*ck off, I wasn't paying you anything anyway. Olivia (backstabber): Why the hate? Are you still upset that Christian likes me more, or that I showed him what he was missing? Me: YOU b***h!!!!!! I blocked her number and deleted Christian's. They'll pay dearly for what they did.
