CHAPTER SIXThere was a throb in Tamara’s voice as she spoke. Then the Duke said, “They will not have gone far and we will follow them.” He moved his horse ahead as he spoke. They crossed the road that formed the boundary of the Park and now stretching over the countryside there were thick almost impenetrable woods. Tamara was suddenly afraid that once the gypsies disappeared among the dark trees it would be impossible for an outsider to find them. She was aware that the gypsies had secret paths by which they moved from place to place, but she hardly expected the Duke would know about them. Yet he rode confidently ahead and after twisting between the trees they came upon a narrow track that was just wide enough, Tamara realised, for a caravan. She saw that there were deep ruts made
