Once again she knew that he was mocking her and she answered,
“There is one more thing, Your Grace.”
“What is it now?”
“You will not forget that Sándor should go to school? He needs companions of his own age as well as lessons.”
“I have already said that I will give it my consideration.”
“Then I can only thank you for being so generous.”
Tamara curtseyed, conscious as she did so that the Duke’s eyes were on her face.
Then as she turned to walk away he said,
“Your father’s books were, of course, written under his name? I shall make enquiries to see if I have any of them in my library. If not, it is an omission that should be remedied.”
For a moment Tamara held her breath and then, because she could think of nothing to say, she curtseyed again.
“I thank Your Grace,” she murmured.
