The walk had been fairly quiet compared to the previous days of traveling. There was a strange air lingering between Navarro and I. After our last conversation, Navarro didn’t seem to be in the mood for any kind of conversation. I was sure he was focusing on staying awake and alert as well. Navarro suddenly stopped walking, his ears perking as he went on high alert. A moment later, I heard what he did. Footsteps were approaching us at an alarming pace. There had to be at least three sets, no four, and they had a horse with them. I looked at Navarro to see if we should run, but he only held out his hand. “Play it cool,” he whispered. “We’ll look more suspicious if we try to run.” I nodded and focused on controlling my breath.
