Chapter 5

Rebecca sat at her kitchen table, picking at the salad on her plate. Much of the morning, she had been speaking with Dr. Clark and Dr. Reese, trying to find someone who might know how to treat William and Amelia’s daughter, Willa. The only doctor they knew who was a vampire had no experience with what was happening to little Willa and had no suggestion of whom to turn to for information. She was lost in her thoughts when someone set a cup of coffee on the table in front of her. She looked up to see her son, Ben, smiling at her. He dropped into the chair beside her and sighed. “Any luck finding a doctor to help with Willa?” Ben asked as he sipped his coffee. “None,” Rebecca said, letting out an explosive exhale. “I don’t know who else to call, write, or text. At this point, I would send up smoke signals if I thought it would do any good.” “Do you know of any other doctors who might be able to help? It wouldn’t matter if they were a vampire as long as they knew what to do to help Willa,” Ben said. “Nope. Not a one. Dr. Reese, Dr. Clark, and I spent the entire morning speaking to everyone we know and quite a few we have never heard of. The only recommendation we received was to call Will’s brother. Considering how he has spoken about Lia and the kids in the past, we don’t want to do that without consulting her and Will.” “Yeah, that could be bad,” Ben agreed. The pair fell silent as they sipped their coffee, lost in their own thoughts. Before long, Rebecca began to feel her son’s shifting emotions. He was unsettled, which was not normal for him. “What’s wrong, Ben? I can feel how upset you are. Spill it,” Rebecca said with a raised eyebrow. “Are you worried about Willa? If so, don’t be because we will find someone to help her.” “It isn’t Willa. It is something else, and I don’t know what to do about it,” Ben sighed. “Then what?” “I found my mate a while back, but she doesn’t know yet,” Ben admitted. “You did? Why doesn’t she know? Don’t you want her for your mate? Who is she?” Rebecca fired at her son. “She doesn’t know because she isn’t eighteen yet. Her birthday is in a couple of weeks. I’m not sure if I should tell her now or let her find out on her birthday. I do want her to be my mate. At least, I think I do. It might get weird because of who she is,” Ben said, staring at the coffee cup in his hand. “Obsidian is a small community. That could match the description of most of the unmated werewolves who live here,” Rebecca said with a loving smile. “Who is she or he if things happened that way?” “It’s she,” Ben sighed. “It is Darla. I am mated to an alpha werewolf, dragon, witch, hybrid.” Rebecca leaned back and blinked at her son. “I will admit it. I did not see that coming. Are you sure?” “I’m positive. I scented Darla in the garden right before Amelia’s wedding. When everything happened with Logan, I didn’t say anything. Since then, I have been trying to decide if I should tell her or not. To make it worse, whenever I am close to her, my wolf goes crazy and wants to claim her even though she doesn’t know.” “Have you thought about telling Nick and Emma? I’m sure they would want to know, and it would put their minds at ease knowing you are their daughter’s mate.” Ben sighed, “I thought about it, but again, everything with Logan being rejected disrupted that. They were like the rest of us. We were all focused on trying to ease his pain and shock about the situation. That and Damian has been broody and making random threats against his little sister’s future mate if he ever upsets her.” Rebecca snorted and said, “And Damian has no idea he is threatening one of his best friends. Now I understand a little more. Oh, how I would love to be a fly on the wall when he finds out.” “I just hope he won’t be mad at me for it. It isn’t like I can control who my mate is. If I could, I would not have picked Darla. It feels weird that it's her. I have always thought of Darla the same way I do Lia and Everly. Being her mate never crossed my mind,” Ben said, shaking his head. “It will work out,” Rebecca said as she took her son’s hand and squeezed it. “It might take a while, but it will work out.” “I hope so. I have seen what being rejected has done to Logan, and I do not want to go through that. On top of that, if Darla rejected me, I would still have to see her and her family daily. That would be a nightmare.” “You’re right, but it could always be worse,” Rebecca grinned. “Oh yeah? How?” Ben questioned his mother. Rebecca opened her mouth to reply but was cut off by her cell phone ringing. She picked it up and did not recognize the number. Rebecca thought about ignoring the call but thought better of it since they were trying to locate a doctor for Willa. She answered her phone, “Hello?” “Thank the goddess you answered,” Darla breathed. “Darla? What’s wrong?” Rebecca asked as she looked at Ben. “Willa attacked Everly,” Darla blurted out. “What? When?” Rebecca demanded as she grabbed a notepad and started taking notes. “Just a couple of minutes ago. We are at the edge of the meadow to the north of Lia’s spring. Willa is still not right, and we are scared of getting close to her,” Darla explained. “How bad is Everly hurt?” Rebecca asked as she scribbled notes. “I don’t know. She was bitten when she was a wolf. When Evvs shifted back to human, she has deep bites on her neck and shoulder that are bleeding pretty bad.” “Is Everly conscious? I need to talk to her if she is,” Rebecca told her. “Yeah, here she is,” Darla muttered. “Aunt Bex!” Everly exclaimed through the phone. “How bad are you hurt? Has your wolf or dragon healed you yet?” Rebecca questioned. “I'm still bleeding pretty bad, and it hurts like crazy, but I'm OK. My dragon and wolf have not tried to heal me yet. The skin isn't cut cleanly, so I don't think it will be a good idea to heal it before you or someone else looks at it.” “Smart girl. How is Willa? What is happening with her?” Everly sighed, “She keeps snarling and looking at us. Her fangs are elongated, and her eyes are red. Aunt Bex, Willa wants to feed on us. What do we do?” “I want you and Darla to protect Isla with your auras. Form a bubble around yourselves to keep her from hurting you again. If you need to do it, restrain Willa with your auras. It will make her uncomfortable, but it won’t harm her. Can you do that?” “We can do that,” Everly said. “Good. I will get a team together, and we will be there as soon as possible.” “Thank you, Aunt Bex,” Everly said. “You're welcome, sweetheart,” Rebecca said, then ended the call. “Do you need me to go with you?” Ben asked. “It wouldn't hurt. Call Julian and let him know what happened. Lia will handle hearing it from him better than any of us,” Rebecca instructed. “Who are you going to call?” Ben asked as he pulled his phone from his pocket. “No one. I'm going to mind link your Aunt Olivia. She can tell Tyson. Flying will be the fastest way to get there,” Rebecca said, then sighed. “Keep your fingers crossed. This could make him start incinerating things.
