Later that night after supper, Easy sat in the porch swing talking to Midnight.
“Midnight,” she said, “can’t you talk him out of this?”
“Easy, I can’t do that. Besides, he wouldn’t listen, and he’d think I was crazy for asking him to. Hell, he don’t want to face the kid, but he’s been challenged. If he backs down now he’d be labeled a coward. He’d never live it down.”
“But I’m so afraid for him.”
“Look, Easy, this kid, he don’t stand a chance against Reno. He’s a hot head that just wants a reputation. Reno’s not worried. If he had to go up against a man like himself, or someone with more experience it would be different, but this kid is just an annoying little insect that Reno has to deal with now and again. Believe me, I know.”
