Making my way back to class, my mind wondered back to the untouched form on my desk. They expected me to have planned out a career path—what a joke. I didn’t even have a future to waste on such a ridiculous idea. I was told that all I needed to do was just to exist and, currently, that was proving to be almost impossible. I had always heard that it took money to live. But, I never fully realized the gravity of that saying until now. Career Path? Ha, yeah right. My greatest plans for the future consisted of how I was going to snag something to eat for lunch. I hadn’t had anything since yesterday. As if on cue, my stomach roared. Taking a moment, I inhaled a deep breath and pushed the classroom door open.
Clearing my throat as I entered, I went quietly back to my seat. I looked over to where that crazy girl sat. What was her name again? I glanced down at the pen that she had put on the desk. It was pink and the cap was a w*******g? Or maybe it was a cat? Just what the hell was it? I picked it up and felt myself smile a little. Even a girl in elementary school wouldn’t use a pen like this. I chuckled. This belonged to and, from what I could tell, was well used by some weird-angry high school girl. She had chased me all the way down to the men’s bathroom because I didn’t accept her help. Just who was she? Well, whoever she is, she is absolutely insane. Who does something like that?
“Dude, where is Belle?”
I looked over at the girl who had jerked me out of my thoughts. I guessed she was a friend of hers so I just shrugged in response. Leaning back in my seat, I directed my attention back to Mrs. Katherine’s lecture. I guessed everyone had filled out their forms while I was gone. That was fine with me. I wasn’t going to do it anyway. I looked back to Mrs. Katherine. She was going on about quadratic equations. It looked like she was doing a good job too because everyone was taking notes. I didn’t understand what she was saying, but it looked like the rest of the class was getting it. I laid my head back down on the desk. It was no use. I just couldn’t focus.
The door opened with a loud creak and the room went silent. Without looking up, I heard a polite feminine voice say, “Sorry, Mrs. Katherine.”
Footsteps were coming towards me and I realized that it was her.
“As I was saying class…” Mrs. Katherine continued. She was explaining the next step to find the answer for ‘x’ when I heard a tap on the desk.
Peering up, I saw a folded piece of paper. I sighed and sat up, quietly unfolding the paper.
You’re going to be taught a lesson.
What the hell? I looked over and saw that my desk mate, Belle was glaring at me. I was fairly certain that she was envisioning hurling daggers in my direction. I picked up the pink excuse for a pen and scribbled on the back of the note.
I am already in the middle of a lesson. Or didn’t you notice that we are in class?
Handing her the note, I flopped my head back down and prayed that she would just leave me alone. But, that wasn’t going to happen. I heard her growl in frustration. Growl? I glanced over. Her eyes narrowed into slits as she passed me another message.
What the hell is your problem?
“Nothing,” I muttered. I wasn’t even going to waste my time writing back. Besides, I didn’t want to put in the effort. Far too troublesome.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that her lips were pressed firmly together as she scribbled down something on another piece of paper. With an angry huff, she placed the note on my form. I groaned inwardly as I reached out and read the note. Why couldn’t she just leave me alone?
You really don’t know who I am? Everyone in this school knows who I am and are scared of me.
My brows furrowed at this and I looked over at her. She was just a small, talkative and annoying little girl. What was there to be scared of? The confusion must have shown on my face because she handed me another note. I could practically hear the trees weeping at the waste of paper.
Want to know why? Because, I bite.
How ridiculous. I flipped the note over and wrote I’m not worried. I bite back.
When I didn’t immediately pass it back to her, she leaned over when Mrs. Katherine turned towards the board. She was leaning so far over, I half way expected her to fall out of her seat or on me. Yep, she was crazy. As she read my reply, her blue eyes flared, her lips pursed and her nose scrunched up in disdain. Reaching out, she grabbed the note. As she was writing, I noticed how a piece of her hair had fallen down. She pushed it back to reveal a cuff earring on the upper part of her ear. I guess it was to complete the “edgy” look she was trying to portray.
When she finished writing, she all but shoved the note in my direction.
That’s enough. Stop trying to flirt with me. Just who the hell do you think you are?
Alright, that’s it. Grabbing the form, I picked up my bag and patted on ths girl's back in front of me me.
“Hi,” I said while offering her a smile.
Instantly, she flushed red and replied, “H-hello.”
I could hear the whispers going around in the room but I didn’t care.
Summoning all of my patience, I gently asked, “Could we exchange the seats, please?”
She bobbed her head vigorously as she stammered out, “S-sure! My name is Alina by the way.”
Yeah, yeah. Sure, whatever. Just get up and switch with me already, I impatiently thought.
Standing up, we quickly made the switch.
“Thank you,” I mumbled.
I really meant it too. Belle was irritating me to the point that Mrs. Katherine’s lecture starting to sound rather interesting. I let out a sigh of relief.
“Are you f*****g serious?” Belle muttered under her breath.
Pretending not to hear or care, I focused my gaze on Mrs. Katherine. Belle needed help. I glanced over at her. Her lips were moving and I realized that she was talking to herself. Yeah, she needed some serious help.
