There were several ways to sever the bond between mates. The most obvious one was death. The death of one partner in the bond would result in instant, painful severing that lead to the surviving partner descending into madness and that was if they survived the initial throes of their partner's death, most of the time the survivor took their own lives after the loss of their mate or died naturally from how tasking their loss was on themself.
The second way was marking someone else, a lot of times, males were mated to twins, which meant he could mark both with no problem, or if a female was mated to multiple men, she could be marked by all of them with no issue.
