Chapter Five Nathan Hawke didn’t look like he belonged in the middle of the glitz. “Keep your eye on him,” Evan had said as he dashed past her, too busy to keep an eye on the man himself. The carnival atmosphere annoyed Liza, her artistic sensibilities recoiled from such ostentatious displays, but this was Evan Mills in his glory on the occasion of his most important premiere of the year. It was comforting to know that Evan trusted her with Mr. Hawke that night, when he’d never trusted her with him before. Evan had been thoroughly astonished that Nathan Hawke agreed to attend, after he’d declined the invitation three years running. With all his other concerns, Evan had little choice but to allow Liza to “watch” the man. Liza kept her distance. The idea was silly in itself, as if some
