Becky was confused. This restaurant was one of the fanciest in town, but instead of dropping her off at the curb like she expected, Xavier got out and handed the valet the keys.
“You’re coming too?” she asked.
“Of course I’m coming.” He gripped her by the arm and hissed, “Just stop talking. You’ll make yourself sound like an i***t, and I’ve got too much riding on tonight for you to mess it all up.”
Becky didn’t reply. She pictured how happy he’d be in the morning, counting out his bills. One day, she told herself, he’d understand. One day, he’d realize that while he’d been so obsessed and worried about money, she’d sacrificed herself for him. To make him happy. To bring him peace.
Because she loved him.
And he would love her back.
