4 Laird Iston guided us outside and led us along the wide front path that wound its way around the right side of the building. Our path joined the stone-lined trail that I’d seen through our bedroom window. The branches of the trees grew over the path and covered the steps in their thick canopy. Among the bright greenery, however, was a spot of blight in the form of a dead tree here and there. They looked so out of place among the other living things that I wondered if they weren’t killed on purpose. “I wonder at your companion, Lord Nilogh,” Iston mused as he looked over his shoulder at me. My eyes widened and I blinked at him in reply. “Wonder what?” Asher questioned him. “She has a rather interesting look in her eyes,” he admitted as he smiled at me. “Like that of a newborn.”
