CHAPTER FOURTEEN Standing on Lucy’s front doorstep on Saturday night, Ryker held the single stem behind his back. At the flower shop, he’d headed straight for the roses because those were what he bought women, but the purple iris caught his eyes. The vibrant color reminded him of Lucy, so full of life. Anticipation for his “date” buzzed through Ryker. He hadn’t gone to this much trouble for a woman before. Not unless you counted what he did for his mom on Mother’s Day, her birthday in July, and Christmastime. But like his mother, Lucy was worth it. Even if this wasn’t a “real” date, he wanted her to see how much fun they could have together. Tonight would be a memory to take with him when he left Wicksburg. One he hoped she would recall fondly herself. Smiling, he pressed the doorbell.
