Chapter 2
Outrageous
I stood there in shock.
He had bid outrageously on me, and I had no idea why.
What was wrong with this man? How could he be so…so…brutish!
What was he thinking? Who bids 150,000 dollars on someone?
I got off the stage as quickly as I could and was immediately surrounded by Amanda and Bryan.
“That man bid 150, 000 dollars on you!” Amanda exclaimed.
“I know Amanda I was standing right there when it happened.” I replied, I kept an eye around the place, I had a feeling Mr. Harrington would find me soon enough to ‘talk’ again.
“Who bids that much for a date? I thought you would get a couple thousand, but that man was determined to win you.” Bryan chimed in.
I gave Bryan a glare.
“I need a damn drink.”
“Here take this.” Bryan said passing me a glass of champagne.
I took the glass and took a swig of it.
“Miss. J is it?”
I felt a tingle down my spine when he spoke, causing me to spill the champagne all over my hand. I knew it was Red again, he wasn’t the type to back down so easily.
I turn to look at the man. “What do you want Mr. Harrington?”
I saw Bryan and Amanda disappear from the corner of my eye.
“Do you have an answer for me?” He asked.
“I told you I don’t know anything!”
“I know you do. The faster you tell me the faster I’ll disappear from your life.”
“Well, I can’t help you, so if you don’t need anything else from me, leave me alone!” I told him a too loudly.
“I do need something else. What I paid for. I expect to see you tomorrow night.”
“I can’t.”
“Yes you can.” He replied.
“No. I’m busy.”
“I think you’ll find a way to make time, the issue is important, and I need my answers.”
I rolled my eyes. This man didn’t care what happened to his sister for the past 10 years, why does he care about where she was now? I wouldn’t help him; Jade was too delicate. I needed to protect her.
“I told you I’m busy.” I reiterated.
“You’ll find a way to make it work. I’ll see you at Providence at 7pm tomorrow night. You wouldn’t want to take away the money for this children in need.” He answered.
“That’s…That’s like blackmailing!” I whisper yelled at him.
“I don’t think it is. It’s a good way to see how selfish you really are though. Will you show up or will you put your own needs before the sick children? We all know you don’t hold much up to your own personal happiness, not even family.” He stated.
I was shocked at his statement. How could this man that I barely know think so low of me and accuse me of being such a horrible person. He had really hurt me with his words this time. I had always prided myself in being able to push past judgements and harsh words, but this was different. I didn’t know why but it was.
“You don’t know a thing about me Mr. Harrington, and you’ve made your opinions of me very clear. So instead of talking to a person you deem so despicable, why don’t you go talk to someone who can tolerate your horrible attitude and harsh judgements. AND. LEAVE. ME. ALONE. Don’t worry about the contribution for the auction, I’ll take care of it.” I told him cruelly, poking my figure into his hard chest, trying to make my words filter in and register in his mind.
Before he could say anything to me, I turned around and practically ran away from him.
“That man is delusional if he thinks I’m going to show up.” I muttered to myself when I reach the lobby.
“He did pay good money for it.” Bryan tried to joke.
But I was anger and stared daggers into him. “This is your fault, both of you. I wouldn’t be stuck in this problem if I hadn’t come here tonight!” I said throwing my hands up in the air.
“I’m confused.” Amanda stated.
“You know you have to go right?” Bryan asked me.
“Doesn’t mean I will.”
I knew men like Theodore Harrington well. They craved control just like my brother Greyson and my father. I had fought to be independent and live a life free of controlling men, I wouldn’t let this man ruin it. I had to be strong.
I had to find Jade before he did.
But how?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had gotten home last night and prayed that when I woke up the horrible man would be a bad dream. I unfortunately wasn’t that lucky. Instead of pushing him out, he had invaded my mind. I had had a…a… oh god I couldn’t even admit it to myself!
I had had a s*x dream about the man!
What was wrong with me? I asked myself as I dropped my head into my hands for the fifth time this morning. I had been trying to push it out of my brain but no luck so far.
“Ma’am you have a delivery of flowers and a card.”
I looked up from my breakfast to see Rosa, my housekeeper holding a big bouquet and card.
“Please just leave them on the table in the foyer Rosa.”
She nodded her head and left.
I looked down at my breakfast, a few fresh fruits cut up and a coffee. I didn’t have the stomach to eat much today, I was too worried about what had happened to my friend to make her brother want to find her in such a desperate way.
The man had said things to push back to the brink of falling apart again. I had been struggling with my family issues but to accuse me so crassly of being selfish and leaving my family. What did this man even know about me? What he heard from other people. How could he be so obnoxious?
Better question…why did I care so much?
I decided I couldn’t eat anymore and got up.
Just then my phone rang.
I smiled as I looked at the caller ID.
“Damien!.” I said answering the phone.
“Hey Cuz. How are you doing?” He asked.
I’ve been better, but I’m pushing through. How are you doing?”
“Great. I just landed in LA. What do you say to meeting up for dinner tonight? I have a few meeting but I should finish up around 6pm.”
This was exactly what I needed. “Sure! Where shall we meet?”
“I’ll send a car.” He answered.
“Alright then.”
“Gracie.”
“Ya, Damien?”
“Are you okay?” He asked.
I closed my eyes and took a silent breath.”
“I’m great! Can’t wait to see you tonight!” I said with as much enthusiasm I could muster up.
“We’ll talk tonight.” Was all he said before hanging up.
I had given the world this illusion that I was a happy soul all the time and for the most part I am but then I have these phases where all it feels like a ruse waiting to be exposed.
I shook my head in an attempt to clear and think positively.
I had some beautiful flowers waiting for me with a note! I could have a secret admirer I thought excitedly.
I walked over to the vintage inspired foyer with a giant circular antique wood table in the center. It held the flowers Rosa had brought in for me along with a note.
The flowers were beautiful. They were some of my favorites and not a rose in sight. I don’t know why but I had always hated roses. Never understood the concept of something beautiful being able to cause you pain.
I picked up the note and opened it up.
I immediately regretted it.
Miss. Novak/ Miss. J
Remember Providence at 7 pm tonight.
Don’t be late.
I will get my answers one way or another.
T.H.
The man clearly had strong opinions of me and thought I influenced Jade’s mind. He didn’t know the truth and he wasn’t going to find out from me.
I threw the note back down on the table and walked away. I had only met this man last night and he seemed to be taking over my mind. I needed to clear him out so I could focus on myself.
I needed to work out and spend my day doing everything to avoid him or any thoughts about him. I could do that!
I didn’t know I was going to be so wrong…
