Unwelcome reunions

1060 Words
I loved this wolf before. I did not wish death upon him even though he did me wrong. But this was too much. How could he be here? This was so unexpected. So unwelcome! As he said my name again, I couldn't find my voice to speak, so I stood there assessing him the same way he was doing to me. He was dressed like he would've been at the Night Storm. In an expensive three piece suit. His hair and beard were neatly trimmed. He looked as wickedly dashing as ever. "Kev," I whispered, then recalled how we ended things. "I can't believe it's you. How long have you been here?" "I..." I couldn't speak still. My situation was overwhelmingly sad right now. It felt like I was right back to where I started. A captive servant at the mercy of Kevin Fox. "You're a visiting guest at this party, right?" I asked that to give myself a tiny bit of hope that I wouldn't run into him after tonight. He gave a half smile and remarked, "Guest? Yes. Visiting? Not quite." My heart dropped. "What does that mean?" "It means I live here. Like you, it seems. I'm assimilating too." "Fox!" Someone called out. A warrior, no doubt. "C'mon. Your uncle needs you!" "I'll be right there," he called back. Then to me, he said, "I'll be seeing you again. Often, actually. I'm glad you're okay, doll. You're actually here, wow! The Fate is amazing." I was momentarily confused. It was hard to determine anything from the softness of his tone. There was not a single sign of malice in those pale blue eyes. Did he forget our last conversation already? I watched him leave, unable to move until someone called out to me. "Tessa!" It was Peyton. He seemed worried as he looked from me to Kevin's retreating figure. I reminded myself that he didn't know what happened between us. I hadn't told him yet. "That's Gamma Kevin, isn't it?" he asked with a frown. I nodded and quickly rushed back into the kitchen when I caught the guard's hard eyes on me. The ceremony began shortly. Vivi was right. The families involved were the first and second family of this pack. The party was a big affair. The air smelled of wealth and important dignitaries. Alpha Nick, his Luna and even his mother were actually here in the front row. So was the Beta, his new mate and entire family. As I continued my work, Kevin's words echoed in my head. I'll be seeing you again. Often, actually. I kept my head down as a servant should. But I let my eyes and senses rove about. This grand hall was definitely close to the woods. The distant sound of the stream, of forest birds, and creatures chirping were audible to me. The blessings ended sometime soon, and the feast kicked off almost immediately. That meant cleaning and replacing dishes, wine glasses and tumblers, napkins. It seemed like the whole pack was here at this party. A part of me envied the omegas that were allowed to wear nice dresses. These ones were free. Some even wore provocative clothes and seemed to be doing their best to stay far from females with mates. Or boyfriends. My gaze caught one with so much cleavage on display that I pitied her if this was the Night Storm. Such an outfit could get a servant beaten to death over there. It was clear that they wanted to score a high-rank wolf. Good for them. In my former pack, prepare to die if someone's mate looked at you the wrong way. Omegas here were rather brazen. They seemed proud of their low rank and the fact that they were soft ones of our kind. Well, their Luna was one of them. That had to be why. How I envied them. To be free like this. Free to flirt. To play. To be a girl. I too would be proud of myself if my Luna was a bastard and the child of a pleasure servant. I didn't set eyes on Kevin again, and soon, I felt somewhat glad to be here at this party, even if it was to do chores. It felt good to feed my eyes. Our guards were different from the ones during the day now. They watched us and the other servants closely. They were not the only ones doing the watching. I could feel unseen eyes all around. Tiny things that looked like electrical devices were all over the place. I went about with my work, doing my best to ignore the rampant sound of s*x that now echoed everywhere. I redirected my attention to getting familiar with the environment. I had the heart to go outside the building and simply look around. Of course, the goal was to take stock of the environment, not to attempt an escape. Not yet. This thought nagged at me continuously till I was slowly pushing another round of dirty tumblers in a cart back to the kitchen. My eyes settled on the door far down the hall. The bold Emergency Exit sign called to me. Behind that door had to lead to the woods. I was sure of it. Moving nonchalantly, I pushed the cart quietly past the kitchen. The sound of flowing water, like a stream, increased. Maybe I would go for a walk and see how far I made it. I wouldn't be quickly missed. Not in five or ten minutes. Everyone was in a party mood, weren't they? For sure, their attention was divided. The Forest Moon was huge indeed. Their lands reached up to California on one side and the outskirts of this city on the other side. According to Peyton. Running away without a plan might be impossible. I would just look around and rush back here. My eyes were on the door knob as I moved closer. Setting the cart aside gently, I began to reach for it when someone spoke calmly behind me. "That's not the kitchen." I froze. Then I quickly regained myself and reached for the cart. I called up my most innocent smile before turning around to face the male. My saviour wolf stood some feet away with one hand on his hip and a mocking smile on his face.
