Goddess forbid that Mrs Fox or his best friend caught his scent on me.
I tried to enjoy his touch as usual. To revel in the feeling of his soapy hands as he washed me. Rather than focus on his hands or his words, my mind preferred to dwell on the meaning behind this seemingly loving action:
He still wasn't ready to tell his mother about us.
I forced my focus back to gossip as he went on about Celia Kai and how she was cruelly dumped by Alpha Nick. I tried hard to pretend I cared.
"Can you believe it? Reign chose a peasant omega over the pretty Celia. We live in crazy times, indeed."
He scoffed mindlessly.
"That Sara chic must be something. I'd like to meet her."
"I hear they have a son," I said absently, my heart twisting painfully.
"Tess, you wanna know who else had children by un-mateable females? Countless wolves. Some of them, Alphas. Your father, for instance, has two. You and your twin. But that didn't make him mate your mother, did it?"
My stomach rolled at his words. I felt physically ill. His face went blank, and his mouth hung open when his eyes met mine. As if he'd only just realized he was speaking out loud.
"Doll, I am so sorry. You know I didn't mean it like that."
"Is that why we're still hiding? Kevin. You think I'm un-mateable like my mother, don't you?"
"Don't put words in my mouth!" His eyes hardened.
"When will you tell your mom? I need a date!"
He swallowed and replied firmly,
"Soon."
"Soon is not a date! I don't know how long I can keep sneaking."
He breathed deeply and resumed rubbing the lather all over me. Then he spoke gently,
"My babydoll, you'll keep sneaking as long as necessary."
It felt like he'd just threatened me.
"You have to trust me and be patient, Tessa!"
With those words, I knew the conversation was over for now. His face remained hard as he finished the important job of bathing me. Then he gestured for me to head out.
We got dressed in silence with his eyes moving over me. Pure, shameless lust made them shine. I could tell he wanted to touch me so much. But he wouldn't. It was too much of an inconvenience to do another bathing.
I watched his back as he went to check to the hall to see if his mother or any of her servants were nearby. At that moment, it occured to me that the trust had died.
Soon might as well be never. After those shameless words about young Luna Reign and worse, my garbage father? How could I keep waiting and trusting him.
With a heavy heart, I made my way out of the chamber. As I entered the hall, leading to the servant's exit, a presence registered. At first, I thought it was one of the servants. Maybe Vivi, the b!t<h.
But it was Curtis Burns. Kevin's other best friend.
I loathed the guy. That he actually propositioned me was unforgivable. He'd shamelessly offered me money and a chamber "inside his house." Like I was an actual paid pleasure servant.
Being a high-ranking warrior of the pack, I lowered my head in a silent greeting as custom demanded. I was about to walk past when he blocked my path.
"The lovely Tessa," he breathed. "Where from? Where to?"
It felt so weird that he'd just spoken to me. This was the first time in nearly two. He'd totally ignored me after I declined his "offer to serve him."
A disinterested glance was all I got whenever we crossed path. I was taken aback by his question. His posture indicated that he was serious about getting an answer.
Fate! Did he find out about Kev and I? A part of me hoped that he did.
As he waited for me to speak, his eyes darkened and moved over me. I recovered from the mild shock and replied hesitantly,
"I had to uhm... deliver Gamma Kevin's laundry."
My heart lurched when he stepped closer.
"You've gotten prettier, Theresa Nile," he said in a low, rough voice.
"Thank you," I replied curtly.
My irritation grew because of the look in his eyes. It looked like he was about to repeat that disgusting offer from a long time ago.
"I'm officially finished for the day and have to return to my quarters. Please move out of the way, Gamma!"
But instead of stepping aside, he took another step closer. I stiffened.
"You're older now," he said in a harsher voice. "I expect you're wiser. I've been very patient, you know. You've had nineteen months to think of my offer. It's time to abandon these menial chores and come serve ME. You'll live within my home as my favored pet."
Pet?
My body heated with anger. I swallowed. When he moved closer again, I didn't step back. I considered bringing out my claws to s***h his face.
He sensed my displeasure and smirked. Then, leaning close so that his face was almost touching my neck, he sucked in a breath slowly, before murmuring,
"The silence. That's a yes, I take it."
"Actually, it's a NO!"
I stepped back to turn away and use the back door instead.
"You need a little persuasion, huh."
Before I knew it, he caught me by the arm and pinned me to the wall with such force. His mouth crushed mine in a forceful kiss. I stabbed and clawed at his shoulders, fighting to push him away to no avail.
"Curtis!" Someone growled.
It was Kevin.
The distraction caused his grip to loosen. I pushed him away as my boyfriend advanced with lengthened claws.
"What the f*ck are you doing?"
"What does it look..." Curtis didn't finish his reply.
Kevin dove for him, punching him across the face with thick claws. I flinched at the attack. Drops of blood trailed on the floor. The wound began to close swiftly as he lunged towards Kevin in retaliation.
Their bodies and claws collide, both fighting with bared fangs that struggled to catch a hold of flesh. They didn’t fully shift, but their barks and growls filled the hallway. I stood rigid, unsure what to do.
The sound of footsteps rushing towards our direction caused me to find my voice.
"Kevin! Kevin, please!"
At the sound of me calling his name, he looked my way and snarled. My heart jolted, but I told myself that he's angry at everyone right now. Then it dawned on me. He's fighting over me with his best friend right this minute.
His mother would hear and rush here soon.
What did it mean? Was this how he meant to reveal our relationship?
Butterflies began to dance in my stomach. Mrs. Fox appeared right then.
"Kelvin! Curtis!" She barked.
A guard and another Gamma friend rushed ahead of her to break off the fight.
"Let go this instant!" She ordered. "What the hell is going on here?"
The two guards had a hold of Kevin now as he struggled to free himself from their tight hold. He snarled, hissed, swung his claws Curtis' way.
"Kev, please!" I pleaded.
I'd momentarily forgotten the simple rule that servants did not call out a ranked Gamma's first name.
Kevin glared at me with shimmering eyes as he gritted,
"I am Gamma Kevin to YOU! Your Master! How dare you address me as friend?"
