Chapter 1
When life takes you to a strange turn, you will only have one option—run and hide!
But with the current simple yet wonderful life of Laura, nothing of that sort came into her mind. Just enjoying the simplicity and fulfillment of life together with her lawyer boyfriend, Francis.
“How’s work?” walking side-by-side with Laura on the shore barefooted, a man with a tranquil and gentle look like the sea besides—named Francis asked with an anticipation of hearing Laura’s life. The calm waves of the sea echoed in their ears, unpredicting of its turbulence.
Laura dramatically heaved a sigh while clinging onto his fingers. The sea breeze splashing her brown wavy hair, prompted the woman to bring her hair to one side of her shoulder and gently grasped on it.
“Just as usual, the same busy hospital.” She lazily replied and slowed her pace to sightsee the same blue with different shades in front of her—the sky that meets the sea. “But I suddenly noticed something odd about my father, though.” Her slim face was plastered with a frown as she gently grabbed the hem of Francis’ sleeve to sit on the white fine sand.
“Uh-huh, what is it?” Francis curiously asked as he stared at her admiringly. They have been together for almost a year now, but nothing could still take off his admiration to his wonderful girlfriend.
He will keep on admiring this woman until his eyes couldn’t see anymore, until his capability to feel has ran out and until… the sea in front of them has dried.
Laura tilted her head to the right side with her squinted eyes and replied, “He’s… He’s so agitated these days. There was even once a time where…” Laura trailed her voice off when her brows shrank. She still clearly remembered what happened yesterday and it left an extreme shock in her.
“He suddenly shouted at me.” She remarked with trace of confusion on her face.
That was the very first time she received such a shout from her dad. And it’s bothering her until now. What did she do so wrong for him to do that?
“He must be so stressed out lately.” Francis answered after a second and averted his gaze to the blue gentle waves.
Laura also considered that thought, knowing the fact that her father is owning a massive and popular hospital. It must not be easy for him. However, that was only the first time that she got a shout from him when stressed. Her father has never done it before.
But she agreed with him in the end. Laura nodded her head slowly. “That must be the case…” she murmured and stared at the same sight.
Having it heard from her in a seemingly downhearted voice, made Francis to grab her shoulder gently and bring her to the one side of his chest. “It’s alright. Don’t worry about it too much.” He soothingly whispered at her and tapped her shoulder.
Laura raised her head at him and smiled. She reached out for his lips to give him a kiss. “Understood, Mr. Lawyer.” She muttered afterwards that ended them both laughing endearingly.
With the hypnotizing yet calming sound in the surroundings, Francis and Laura found themselves taking a nap while cuddling each other on the white sand. It was just a brief moment, though, when the ring from a phone suddenly awoke the two of them.
“It must be yours.” Francis spoke when he noticed the ring not coming from his phone.
Laura instantly sat properly to pick the phone on her sling bag. Seeing the caller made her flustered. She showed it to Francis for a brief moment.
“Answer it. Your father must be trying to make up.” He urged as he read the caller as Laura’s dad.
Just as he said, Laura answered the call of her father, expecting for a sweet yet raspy voice from him and make up from his sudden exclamation to her. However, what she expected is way too far from what she received.
“Laura. At home. Now!” she wasn’t even given a moment yet to express her surprise and confusion when her daddy dropped the call instantly. She gaped her mouth slightly open while staring at the phone, for the second time… her dad shouted at her again.
“What is it?” Francis asked with a clear concern on his face. Unfortunately, he didn’t hear what the other line said but it sounded so serious that he saw his girlfriend flustered and shock.
“Francis…” her voice was about to crack when Francis suddenly hugged her. “I… I don’t know what’s going on… My dad… he wanted me to come home right now.” She murmured worriedly while Francis is gently rubbing her hair.
“Let’s go. I’ll drop you off, hmm?” he answered but, Laura shook her head aggressively.
“No… I’m scared.”
Indeed. Being shouted at is the least thing that Laura wanted to receive as she knew how soft her heart is for a scream. She wouldn’t be able to make it. But now that she received another one from her dad, she’s afraid that coming home might have her received countless storming voice from him.
“It’s alright, I’ll be with—” Francis couldn’t finish his words when another ring suddenly rose accompanied by a vibration in his pants. He fished his phone out of the pocket and seeing the caller had him casting a brief glance to Laura.
It’s the Chief Director of the Barron Law Firm.
“Yes, sir?” Francis answered the other line only to receive a task from the chief director. “But, sir—”
“It’s an order from the higher ups.” The phone call was instantly dropped off, etching a worried look on Francis’ face.
“Laura…” he whispered under his breath. “I’m sorry… I might not be able to go with you.” Francis muttered. He couldn’t look at her into the eyes.
Agitation crawled into Laura’s body as the thought of facing her dad alone gives her the chills. But she ended up smiling at him to give assurance in the end.
“It’s alright. I can manage this.” She answered. Funny as it sounds, she just said she’s scared. But being scared doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have any courage to do it alone anymore. After all, she understood him completely.
After they settled, Francis drove Laura to her home. He gave her a word of encouragement for a moment before he flew off. Meanwhile, Laura is left standing in front of the gigantic gate with the nervousness trying to take over her body.
When she finally made up her mind, she then rang doorbell that incited the guard inside to open the gate for her. Still trying to stay composed, Laura paced her way to the entrance door. As soon as she got in, the middle-aged man with grayish hair greeted her jade eyes.
“Laura.” He called out to her name coldly, making her stiffed. “You do not belong here anymore.”
