Chapter-19 Too late

819 Words
I stand their as I look at Savannah, even though she is not showing any expressions or emotions, I know she wants me to stay. My brain starts to go through every possibility, What if I leave her here alone and something happens to her? What if I stay, then nothing will happen to Savannah but Hiram will be on guard and I won’t be able to catch him. Maybe I should say that I am going, but hide somewhere and stay back and catch Hiram red handed. But what if I catch Hiram but Savannah and her baby is hurt, then what? I can’t risk a mother and her baby’s life to catch a victim. Hiram comes closer to me, “Common Luna, I will drop you home and then I will come back” “No, it’s fine Hiram. I will stay” He looks at Savannah from his side eyes and then turns to me, “Luna your mom is alone. Someone should be with her, she is sick.” “Yes Hiram, I know but she is badly injured and plus she was attacked. I need to be here as a police officer, take her statement once she can speak.” “You can come tomorrow morning for that Luna, I will be here. She will be safe” I pat Hiram’s shoulder, “I know Hiram, but she is a woman, if she will need a woman, just in case. I should stay” He nods, not fighting me anymore. I sit beside her bed and Hiram sits on the couch. She never utters a word. Hiram goes outside to get a coffee, but she still doesn’t say a word and I don’t push her. She starts to fall asleep and I get up from beside her and walk out, slowly closing the door behind me. I call my mom to inform about the situation and why I need to stay behind, excluding the things Savannah said about Hiram. I walk up to Hiram who is filling up a coffee, “We were right here a few days ago, just that time my mother was in the ICU and today it’s her” He nods and says, “Well, I feel there is nothing different” “How?”, I ask intrigued. “It’s just that somebody is in the ICU and we were helpless back then and even today we are helpless.” I nod, agreeing with him. “So, how did you meet her?”, I ask as he hands me a cup of coffee. “Well, she was with me during the training period”, he says, his brows creasing. “Training? For what?” “Oh, well training after our official cooking classes were over, we were hired by a restaurant and she was with me. She was called a a vegetable thief”, he laughs “She always used to take home vegetables from the restaurant to cook meal for his father. I liked her she was free spirited, we hooked up a few times. I guess it was in the restaurant’s kitchen after our work hours and it was raining, probably that was the only time we did it without protection.” “Too much detail”, I murmur. “Sorry. So, well we were caught by the owner, he made us clean the kitchen again and fired us both. I thought we were going to look for new jobs together but she left without telling me anything. I wandered about for a month and then came here to work in James’s restaurant and now she contacted me.” I nod listening to the story. He gives me his cup of coffee, “Luna, can you hold this for a minute, I will be back from the washroom” “Sure”, I take the coffee and sit down as he goes into the male washroom. I keep looking at the door and after a minute or two he comes out wiping his hands. He takes his coffee and we walk back to Savannah’s room only to see blood oozing out of her neck. I rush beside her, “Hiram she is bleeding, oh my god”. I check her pulse and it is faint but there. “Call the doctor Hiram, she still has pulse” Hiram rushes out of the door, and just then savannah’s eyes open wide. “savannah don’t worry you will be okay, just hand in there.” She breathes harshly and pull me with whatever little strength she has and whispers, “Hiii..ram” I look at her with wide eyes, “Hiram did this to you?” She nods and just then life passes out from her eyes. Hiram comes back with the doctors, but I know she is dead. It was too late
