Okay, the guy is cute.
No, cute is an understatement. He is hotter than pepper; a charmer. The type that makes you squirm in your seat when your eyes meet.
The eyes look vaguely familiar but then I've seen lot's of dark eyes before.
They could belong to anyone; from the gateman downstairs to a waiter at café Deli.
I come back to my senses when Pat waves her hand in my face.
"You promised not to drool!" She's grinning. "Got you there girlfriend. And here you thought my crushes were overrated."
"Shut up. I was thinking he looks awfully a lot like a waiter I know."
She hits me on the shoulder.
"You're such an evil b***h! You don't compare my man to such."
I burst out laughing and she makes a face at me before she joins in the laughter.
I know she means no harm; really. We've been doing this since high school. They're just crushes..that's about it.
****
The nightclub is overcrowded. I'm really worried that we're going to miss a table. This is our favourite joint since those college days and I really don't want to travel any longer.
I'm just exhausted.
Someone hugs me tightly from behind and I turn sharply. I mean murder.
I'm surprised when I find Liam standing there, grinning from ear to ear.
"Man, you scared me." I say irritably while punching him on the chest.
"Sorry babe, I haven't seen you in like three months."
"Don't babe me."
"Getting feisty, are we?"
I grin and c**k my head to one side.
"You know me Liam."
"Oh yeah I do, you're made of sarcasm and everything fine."
I bat my eyelids at him and his brow goes up.
"Are you seducing me Mia?"
"You wish."
I follow Pat to the corner table which is already occupied. It's a nice surprise when I find all our former friends there. I turn to Pat and she's giving me that 'b***h I got you' look, her hands crossed over her chest.
"You did this?" I ask and she nods.
"We haven't seen these drunkards in three months. I figured it'd be awesome if they joined us tonight."
"You always think of everything." I say annoyingly and she winks.
"Blame my IQ."
Justin's voice interrupts us.
"Speaking of IQ's, won't you two even say hi to us?"
I grin at him. He's always been a cool guy and one of my best friends.
I hug him and he crushes me against him.
"Stop it! You're going to hurt her!" Pat screams behind me making everyone look at us.
Justin gives her a surprised look.
"What is wrong with you?"
"Don't press her so hard against you. You're going to hurt her. She's pre...."
I look daggers at her and grit my teeth. I'm going to kill her later.
She rolls her eyes then throws her arms in the air.
"Never mind. Go ahead and crush her to death." Then she moves to the table and pulls a chair beside Matt.
Justin c***s his head at me.
"What is wrong with her?"
I shrug. "She's PMSing or something. Let her be."
"No wonder." He snorts before pulling a chair for me.
Bianca smiles at me from her place across the table. I've missed that girl those three months.
"Baby you're glowing!" She says loudly and pat beams at me.
"Told you so."
"Would you all just shut up? We have better things to do, like downing this alcohol." I say irritably. I don't like being in the lime light.
"You're not drinking shit." Pat says while giving me that 'don't argue with me' look.
"Oh, I am." I say daringly.
"You're not."
"I am."
"Fine. One small sip and I'll tell everyone that you are pregnant."
"WHAT?!" everyone at the table screams at the same time.
I look at Patricia while biting my lower lip. If someone doesn't hold me right now, I'll beat her to pulp.
She looks like she just swallowed a live trout.
Damn people who can't keep simple secrets.
"You can't keep a f*****g secret Tee!" I yell in her face.
"I can so keep secrets. You just never said this was a secret."
"Common sense, woman!"
"I didn't mean to tell them. I just..."
"Just keep quiet. Don't make it worse than it already is." I say while holding my face between my hands, aware that all my friends are staring at me.
"Are you really pregnant?" Amy asks with a huge smile. She had a kid in her second year in college.
Her son is totally adorable but I'm not going to have this conversation with her.
I don't want a kid. It's that simple.
"How far along are you?" That's Bianca.
"When did you take the test?" Diana.
"Why on earth have you been keeping this from us!" I glare at Matt.
He's definitely not my favourite person in the world.
And now the bombshell; "Who's the lucky guy?" That question would be from Justin no doubt.
Pat glares at all of them.
"Just give her some space already. She can't answer all that."
"It's your fault Tee so just shut up. I'll answer all your questions. I am not pregnant. It's that simple."
"You look pregnant to me." Amy says nonchalantly.
"It's not confirmed yet. I didn't even take the test."
"Because you already know that you are pregnant." She says again and I grit my teeth.
"I just wanted to have fun one last time before I tested. I don't know for sure if I am."
Diana leans over the table to look at me in the eye.
"Darling, whenever someone's not sure whether they're pregnant, they're always pregnant."
I close my eyes then rub my temples.
I should have stayed at home.
I wring my nose disgustedly at the tall glass with fruit juice cocktail. Who drinks that s**t?
I take a small sip and it's not so bad, but definitely not as good as tequila shots.
If I had known that my one night stand would get me into such a situation, I would have abstained.
I roll my eyes inwardly. Who am I kidding? I almost begged to be laid by that handsome stranger.
I reach for the ice cubes then glower when I realize that everyone is staring at me.
"What?!" I ask irritably.
"You're stressed girlfriend. You should see your face right now." Amy says and Bianca nods.
"Amy is right. You're really going down with something. Why don't just get it off your chest. What are friends for?"
"Friends don't force each other to take disgusting fruit cocktails in night clubs. If I wanted to drink fruit juice, I would have done that at home."
My statement only attracts laughter from everyone.
"That's what you get for getting pregnant and not telling us." Diana says while gulping a shot of vodka with ginger ale. She's into sweet things and all that crap.
Liam wraps an arm around me.
"Give her a break. Just because you all use protection while getting laid doesn't make you saints."
That earns laughter from all around the table.
"Are you guys done having fun at my expense?"
Pat stands up.
"Let's stop this guys. We're not even sure whether she's pregnant. Let the poor mum to be enjoy that s**t in her glass in peace."
Yeah that's Patricia for you; biting you and fighting for you in one sentence.
"Please come with me?" She asks while extending her hand to me and I take it grudgingly.
"Yoh Pat, you'll be lucky to come back here alive. I hear pregnant women can beat the s**t out of you." Matt calls after us and I stifle the stream of curses.
Pat pushes the door to The Ladies open and I'm glad when I find it deserted.
I don't want to recall what happened three months ago.
"What." I ask while crossing my hands.
"Look here Mia, I think you should just take the test right now."
"Okay, I'm going back to the table."
I turn around to go but she grabs my hand.
"I insist. You really should. It's only fair if we know what we're dealing with. The guess work is driving me nuts."
"I'm the one who's pregnant Tee. I should be the one going nuts, not you."
"I know but I can't help it. I guess that's what friends are for."
I shake my head.
"You're not giving up, are you?"
"No chance."
She pulls the kit from her clutch bag and hands it to me.
"Go in there and make me proud."
"I might just spoil it deliberately."
She smirks at me.
"You go ahead." Then she pulls a spare one from her bag. "I got you. Now go and pee on that kit."
I shake my head before I lock the door behind me.
I've no idea where I got some girls from.
I'm not complaining though; far from it.
I emerge from the cubicle a minute later, holding the piece of crap behind my back. I'm not glancing at it.
No way.
I place it beside the sink and Pat looks at it for a single second.
She bursts out laughing.
"Girl, you..."
She's interrupted when the door is pushed open.
I grab the kit and stuff it in my bag then we both gasp when we realize that it's a man who just came in.
