_ The Anniversary _
The smell of pancakes.
I wake up to the smell of pancakes and a booming speaker.
That's Dee and Ren for you when they are on good terms. Today is going to be a happy morning and there won't be bad energy at the breakfast table. Not like the past one week when they hated each other.
Ren is such a good friend. He still showed up at the wedding despite Dee warning him not to. He even bought a present for the bride and groom.
I was delighted to see him. Clearly not as delighted as Dee was. She was all over him, kissing him all around the face when she saw him.
The wedding was fun.
Yesterday was fun.
Today is such a boring day.
I have a class at midday and I don't feel like attending it. But I have to.
I drag myself from the bed and crawl out of the room, heading to the kitchen.
Ren and Dee are playing around the kitchen counter like little kids.
Ren is bare-chested, just wearing his pyjamas. His hair is ruffled up, looking messy and spiky but in a sexy way.
Dee is in Ren's huge T-shirt. Her hair is tied up in a messy bun and her eyes look heavy from sleep. But she's still so damn gorgeous
"Our Highness just woke up." He bows. "What will you have for breakfast, our majesty?"
I fall on the kitchen island, yawning and stretching.
How are these two so active in the morning? I can barely say a word but here they are all talky and twerky.
Dee chuckles.
"Our majesty doesn't feel like talking to peasants like us."
They both chuckle, exchanging gazes.
Ugh! I kinda hate when they are in good terms. Always making fun of me.
I fetch some milk from the fridge, rolling my eyes.
Grabbing a pancake from the dish, I change the subject.
"Did you complete the assignment, Dee?"
She quirks an eyebrow.
"What assignment?"
"Mr Phil gave us an assignment last week. The deadline is today."
From the look on her face, she clearly didn't have an idea. She completely forgot about it. She gets super worried. She always freaks out over little things.
She turns to Ren nervously.
"What about you? Have you done it?"
He shakes his head.
"Not yet. Chill out, bro. Stop freaking out! I'll help you do the assignment and we'll hand it over in time. Stop worrying. You have me."
And that's Ren for you.
Dee is so lucky to have him.
He takes a pancake and gives it to her.
"We have wasted a lot of time making these perfect pancakes." He pecks her cheek. "I'd be damned if you don't enjoy them just because of some stupid assignment!"
Dee turns to look at me.
"And you? Have you done the assignment?"
"Partly. Haven't had the time to finish it. Was busy being a best maid."
She stares at me in utter surprise.
"Is that cold milk straight from the fridge?"
I nod as I grab my mug of milk.
"Yeah, why?"
"With this kind of weather?"
"Yes, you want some?"
"No! I'm not trying to freeze to death like you, weirdo!"
****
The school cafeteria is crowded as usual, especially when it's a tea break or lunch.
We just handed over the assignment.
Ren and Dee worked on the assignment together. We handed it over in time. Now she seems a bit more relaxed and the tension is gone. I don't get why little things freak her out this much yet the major things don't get to her gut. Not even a little.
She's such a weirdo. Yet she calls me the weirdo.
I sip my yoghurt as I watch Ren and Dee. They are bragging about their flings and who they will be banging this weekend.
"Toad?" Ren exclaims. "You mean Toad with the big Adam's apple and crooked teeth? Shut up! That's who you will be banging!!! Boooooooo!"
Dee glares at him.
"Toad is a million times attractive compared to your ratchet random bitches!"
"And those ratchet random bitches are a million times more beautiful than you," he boos, laughing.
I can't help but join in the laugh.
She glares at the both of us.
"No, but seriously Dee. Toad? No f*****g way! You are not f*****g him!" He says.
The tone of his voice feels like it's more of a command.
"Since when do you tell me who I will or won't f**k?" That's Dee.
"Since you started attracting toads!"
"His name is Toad!" She yells. "That doesn't make him a toad."
He rolls his eyes.
"Whatever dude!"
Sitting here silently watching Ren and Dee arguing makes me realize just how lucky I am to have these two crazy humans as my best friends. They are so fun to be with. It's never a dull day when they are around. And if it is a dull day, they sure find a way to sneak in some sunshine. I'd be bored to death if they weren't my friends.
Dee growls under her breath.
I notice her glaring at someone behind me.
I look over my shoulder to see Aimee.
Aimee is the coolest chic in school. We are in the same class. She's so pretty and so stylish and so popular and yet so friendly with everybody. Everybody LOVES her.
Oh, except Dee.
Wearing some ripped jeans, I notice Aimee walking towards us.
She smiles at us and sits beside Ren.
"Hi guys!"
But the flirty greetings are purely directed to Ren.
"Last weekend was fun. We should link up sometime."
Aimee and Ren are friends with benefits. Of all the flings he has had, Aimee seems to be the constant and consistent one. They have hooked up more than once and if they continue playing this game, one of them will end up getting deeply attached. And it won't be Ren. And if that happens, it will be HAPPILY NEVER AFTER for Ren.
Nobody messes with Aimee.
She comes from a very powerful and rich family. Her dad is a prominent tycoon and her mom is a famous actress. One wrong move with her and poof! You're completely washed away from the face of the earth. Isn't that what rich people do when you upset their only child?
But what I love about Aimee is how down to earth she is. I've never once heard her brag about it or even show off like the other rich kids in school. The only reason we ever found out she came from a wealthy family is because her famous mother picked her up at school when she got really sick.
Ren nods.
"Oh yeah! Sure! We should link up!"
"Same time. Same place." Aimee winks at him.
"In his room please!" Dee snaps.
"Oh, hey there Dee! Still cute and cranky, I see."
Aimee waves at Dee but she snobs her.
Dalia can't stop rolling her eyes and growling and frowning. She clearly can't wait for Aimee to leave the table.
"Someone's on her period." Aimee teases. "Sorry about the cramps by the way."
Dee turns to Ren, an evil smile curving her lips.
"Tell this b***h to shut the f**k up or I'll break her plastic nose."
She smirks at Dee.
"I don't do catfights, Sweets."
"Because you are a f*****g weakling!"
"Nah, I'm too classy to act ratchet."
Just before she leaves, she throws one last glance at Ren and winks.
"See you around..."
"I hate that b***h!" Dee sneers, watching her walk away.
"Well, you're the only one." I scoff. "She's so sweet and pretty and easy to like."
"She's a f*****g fake! I hate fakes! Trying to get everybody to f*****g like her! I can see right through her! She's a f*****g demon!"
Ren looks at her, confused.
"You used to like her. Well, until we hooked up."
"Shut up!" She rolls her eyes. "I just feel sorry that my best friend has poor taste in women."
"Have you had a taste of your taste in men?" He snickers. "Correction. Not men, toads?"
Ren keeps making fun of Dalia and so does she. I'm just caught in the middle enjoying the free entertainment.
But at the back of my head, it's still a puzzle how Dee can hate Aimee for no particular reason.
"I wonder what you even see in that bitch." Dee grunts. "She's skinny as f**k. Bones poking out all over her body. Bet they starve her..."
Ren laughs.
He should be defending her but they are both roaring with laughter.
"Ms Bones!"
And that's how Aimee earned the nickname.
Tired of the insults and laughter, I cut them off.
"Guys, that's not funny."
"What?" Dee asks obliviously.
"You are body shaming her. It's not funny."
"It's not that serious," Dee laughs. "Plus, the b***h is too hot it sucks."
Huh, so she's jealous.
****
My phone rings, waking me up.
It's Amira.
She's already back from the honeymoon.
That was fast. She sent a few pictures while she in Zanzibar. The place is breathtaking and the two of them looked so happy and adorable together. They are the true definition of a match made in heaven.
I'm so happy to see my sister so happy with a man that makes her so happy.
"Hey, sis!" I say with a croak.
"Are you f*****g serious? You're still asleep?"
She asks, pure shock in her voice.
I quickly sit up.
Fuck!
It's our Mom's death anniversary.
And my lazy ass is still in bed!
My mom has all the right to haunt me.
