Chapter 9: Missing Home

2500 Words
Gabrielle's POV I arrived at my cabin and flopped down my bed. I still have a long stay. This mission can be really draining. So many lives at stake. And I'm their only hope. I went out for a walk in the woods. After some time, I finally arrived at the first spot I had seen when I first got here. The trees have already grew tall. I reached to a tree and I felt its life surging through me. "Life" I muttered with a smile. I looked up and walked to a more open space. It's been a while since I've flew. Maybe I should stretch out my wings a little. I looked up at the sky. Father, please lend me my wings. A light from heaven shone on me. I gasped and fell on one knee as I felt my wings unravel. I panted and smiled as I got a glimpse of it. Beautiful. I breathed in and then jumped to kick start my flight. I felt the air on my face and I giggled. I opened my arms excitedly. I missed this. I flew for a few more hours just before going back to my cabin. I caressed my beautiful wings for a moment before it retreated back to my body. I gasped again. My human body isn't too accustomed yet to my angel features. Figures. Instead of going inside my cabin immediately, I went to the river platform and took off my top and jeans only leaving me with my underwear. I jumped in the water. It was cold but I felt relaxed being in the water. Then I felt someone close by. Him. I stayed longer in the water. Was he that curious? Finally, my human body could no longer take the lack of oxygen. I submerged from the water and my eyes met his. His eyes widened as he looked at me. "What are you doing here?" I asked him and he looked away. I sighed. I swam closer to the platform and lifted myself up. Alexander glanced at me and his eyes widened even more. "Sht!" he cussed under his breath before turning away. I shook my head and wore my top and jeans. "What are you doing here, Alexander?" I asked him again although I already knew the reason. He sighed. "I was at our family rest house and I wandered off here after a lot of walking in the woods" he explained with a sigh. He hates explaining himself. But since he's in the wrong, he had to save himself. "It's late. Your parents will be worried" I said walking past him. I felt his gaze on my back. "How about you? What are you doing here?" he asked following me behind. "This is my father's cabin" I pointed out. "You stay here?" he asked curiously. I nodded. "Sometimes" I said since I don't always really stay here. We reached the front porch. "It's dangerous to be roaming around the woods at this hour" I told him. "It's more dangerous to be staying here in the woods" he pointed out. True. But the animals here like me and no other humans know my place here so I'm actually safe. Plus, I'm guarded by God himself. "I'm guessing this is how you were able to find Brooke then" he stated more to himself than to me. "Yes. I was wandering around when I heard her" I said. He nodded. Now, he gets it. "I'm going home" he said clearing his throat. I grab him by the arm. He can't. "You should stay for the night" I told him. His brow furrowed and pulled out his arm from my grasp. "What do you think you're doing?" he said. I sighed. "I'm afraid something bad will happen to you on the way back" I told him. A car crash. "What?" his brow furrowed confused again. "Please. I know you don't trust me. I don't expect you too. But just this once, please listen to me" I begged him. He looked me in the eyes as of trying to read my mind. He sighed. "I'm giving my mom a call. Go on inside first" he said and I nod before going inside. I dripped of lake water so I hurried to the bathroom. I took a quick shower and put on a robe before scurrying to my bedroom although I'm sure Alexander saw me from the living room. I got dressed with something comfy. Then, I opened another drawer and I chuckled. Thank you, God I took out the new clothing and went out of the living room where Alexander is. "In case you want to wash up. Also, you can have the bedroom" I pointed to my room. He shook his head. "I'll sleep on the couch" he insisted. I nod knowing I won't be able to convince him. "Have you had dinner?" I asked. He hasn't had dinner. "Yeah" he lied. Okay, then. I go to the kitchen and cut up some fruit before putting it in the fridge in case he gets hungry. I don't have any other food other than vegetables, fruits and bread. Yes, I don't eat meat. "If you get hungry. There are fruits in the fridge" I told him. He only nods and I go to my bedroom to sleep. There's still school tomorrow. I pray first. But unlike the normal days that I pray, I suddenly find myself back where I came. I looked around with a smile but did not move. "My child" God greeted me. I smiled and bowed my head. "Father" I said. He smiled. "How have you been doing?" he asked although he already knew everything. "I'm doing good, Father. I have a visitor in my cabin" I told him. He nodded. "Yes, I know. Alexander Smith" he said with a small. "How are my brothers and sisters doing, Father?" I asked curiously. "There have been a few who have already come back. The rest are doing just fine" he said. I nod. "I will keep doing my best, Father" I promised. He smiled. "I know you will, my child. I know you will" he said with a smile and then I open my eyes and I'm back to my cabin. I miss home. I really do. Instead of sleeping, I went out. I carefully sneaked out from the back of the house and I walked to the lake. I sat down on the platform and looked up at the sky. I smiled and extended my arms as if reaching for the sky. Home seems so near yet so far. But I am happy to be where I am. I am happy that I can serve God. I am happy that I can help people. I am happy that I have a purpose. I am happy with my temporary identity and my friends. I'm just...a little home sick. "You'll catch a cold" I didn't turn around knowing it was just Alexander. "You should be sleeping" I said. "It's still early, you can't possibly expect me to sleep at this time" he said and I finally looked at him. I scooted over and he sat down beside me. "You shouldn't be out here at night. Do you know how many wild animals you could encounter and kill you?" he said. 0 animals. For normal human beings, it is indeed dangerous but I'm an angel. I'm friends with every animal alive. "I'll be fine" I said. Then, there was a moment of silence. "I'm sorry I thought you were lying" he suddenly said. I looked at Alexander and he glanced at me once before looking away and gulping. "I forgive you" I said. "Truthfully, what you said was hard to believe but seeing this place made me realize that I...was wrong" he said flushing red. I chuckled. "It's fine, Alexander. You were worried about your sisters and your family in general. You were trying to protect them and yourself. I get it and like I said, I forgive you" I said. "Now, you should go back inside because you might be the one to catch a cold" I said. "And you're staying out here by yourself like it's a good idea?" he said "I need some time outdoors to soothe myself. I'll be fine alone. We have classes tomorrow and you can't catch a cold" I said. "Are you seriously worrying about me without worrying for yourself first? You know, you do that a lot" he pointed out. "I worry about anyone and everyone. Yes, I put others before myself. It's my thing" I said with a shrug. "Well, your thing is what's going to kill you one day. Normal people have atleast a little bit of selfishness in the body" he argued. "What if I'm not normal?" I asked looking straight into his eyes. Alexander looked back at me. "What do you mean by that?" he said. "Just...nothing. It's just who I am and I can't change that. I was raised like that" I told him. Alexander was quiet for a moment. "You know what? Let's just go back inside since you refuse to go back by yourself" I said and stood up. Alexander followed me back inside. Then, as soon as I got in, I heard a ringing sound. I rushed to my room and picked up my phone then saw a text with a name and coordinates. Here we go. I grabbed a jacket and a flashlight as I rushed out. "Where are you going?" Alexander asked confused. "I need you to stay here. Lock the doors and don't leave. Don't open the doors for anyone except me" I said opening the front door. "What are you doing?!" he said catching me and holding me by my arm. "I really need to go, Alexander. Please" I said in a rush. "I'm coming with you" he said. I sighed. "Grab a jacket" I said. Alexander grabbed a flashlight and I grabbed another flashlight and gave it to him. "Whatever you do, stay close" I said and I ran to the woods with Alexander following me. If it was me, I would've instantly teleported to the place but since I'm with Alexander, things are different. We ran fast and as we could until I heard it. I stopped and turned our flashlights off. Then, I turned to Alexander. "You take the girl and keep her safe" I muttered. Alexander's brows furrowed. "What girl?" he said. And just then, there was a scream. "Come on" I said and pulled Alexander. The scream was getting closer and closer and when we were close enough, we hid by a tree. I motioned for Alexander to keep quiet as I peeked at the scene. The man was holding the girl by the hair as he dragged her. My heart squeezed inside of my chest at the girl's state. "Help me! Somebody, please help me!" she screamed. "Shut up, you btch!" the cruel man said and he slapped her across the face as the girl continued to cry for mercy. Alexander watched it happen and he was ready to attack but I stopped him. I looked at him. "The girl. Promise me" I whispered. Alexander looked hesitant but nodded. Then, I got out from hiding and sneaked from behind them. I stepped on a dried leaf and the man immediately became aware of my presence as he snapped his head in my direction. I was quick to move as I threw a punch on his nose making him let go of the girl and falling back with a groan. I quickly grabbed the girl and ran with her to Alexander. Alexamder took her and I came back to face the man. The man angrily stood up as his broken nose bled. I think I punched him a bit too hard. "Who the fck are you?!" he screamed at me. Then, I heard Alexander and the girl getting away. "She's mine!" he screamed and tried going after them. I stopped him and pinned him to the ground. "Don't do this. This isn't right and you know it. It's not too late to stop" I said. "Let me go!" he screamed as he struggled at my hold. "Let me go you fcking btch!" he screamed even more and this time, he managed to get out of my hold and he quickly pinned me to the ground and held me by the neck. "Elle!" Alexander screamed for me. "No!" I shouted so he wouldn't come to me. I looked at the man's eyes. "P-please. You can still ch-change" I choked out. "It's too late now" he said and laughed in a sinister way. A tear fell from my eye as I felt him being consumed by the darkness. "I-I'm sorry" I said and with that, he screamed and held his head fell to his side. He screamed in pain as he held his head. I pushed myself up as I watch him struggle in pain. Then, I heard people coming our way. "Elle!" Alexander called for me but I didn't look at him. I watch as the cruel man tried to get out of the spell. Finally, the authorities came. The man forced himself up and with bloodshot eyes, he tried to attack me again. *boom I watch him fall in slow motion as a tear fell from my eye. I failed. The man fell to the ground with a bullet in his head. Tears streamed down my face and Alexander came to me. "Elle" he said and checked up on me with a concerned expression. Police came to us and extracted us from the scene as they checked the dead body of the man. I was quiet the whole time they guided us out of the woods. We were put in a police car and they interrogated us. After that, we were drove back to my cabin. I was quiet the whole car ride until we were dropped off. Alexander and I got off and headed inside. "Elle" he said. "You should get some sleep" I said and walked to my room. As soon as I closed the door, I burst into tears. I cried for hours until I was so tired. I forced myself out of my room and when I opened the door, I saw Alexander sleeping by the door. I sighed and crouched down. Why would he even stay here to listen to me cry? I tapped his head so that he wouldn't wake up and then I lifted his body to the couch with my angel ability. I laid him down on the couch and covered him with a blanket. Then, I held his head and tampered with his memories. Instead of remembering the screams, the curses, the blood and the darkness of the night, I made him forget the horrifying sounds and blurred out the whole event. This way, it wouldn't haunt him in his sleep.
