Chapter 8: The Doctor

Kassandra buzzed her intercom and said, “Charles, it’s imperative that I’m not disturb in the next hour.” “Sure thing. Er what do I tell the next patient?” “Just send her to the exam room. Jillian and Emma will take care of her.” This Monday, she had to take care of a few formal things. She drank some water, took a deep breath and before she could let her brain get into an argument with itself, she dialed Jason’s number. It rang but he wasn’t answering. She waited impatiently but he wasn’t picking up.  She glanced at the other phone. The one which belonged to that woman and she wondered if she should use that instead. She had been constantly thinking if she should just drop it at a police station since she was sure that she’d never see her again.  With a sigh, she held the device, turned it on for the first time and pensively gazed at the password screen. She wanted to see the pictures that girl had shown her again but then she would probably end up blocking the phone. What could that four figure password be? How did young women think nowadays?  She pondered about it. Maybe that asshole’s birthday? What was his birthday already? She really couldn’t bother herself remembering these things. She checked her own phone, scrolling down the chat box, remembering how Jason called her out for not wishing him.  After two minutes, she found it. She checked the date and she entered it in the woman’s phone. Hah! To her surprise, it actually worked. Who knew she was that good? Maybe she should have just become a hacker. She tapped on the gallery icon, taken aback at the thousands of pictures and albums. Who the hell had time to take so many photos?! She pursed her lips. She would never see the pictures she wanted to if it was going to be this way.  She pressed the first album, seeing that it was photos of absolutely stunning paintings in a museum. Where was that? She relaxed in her chair, going through them. She herself had not been to an exhibition since a very long time and a sudden yearning to just leave the office overtook her.  There were silly selfies as well and she couldn’t help but chuckle. Such a carefree woman. She saw one where she was sitting at a small table with young kids and doing some paintings with them. Was she a kindergarten teacher? She looked like such a warm person and she was now starting to regret not giving her the chance to speak to her. She was about to view more when her own device started ringing. She promptly answered, “Jason, the divorce papers are ready. I need you to come in today at 8 p.m. and sign them.” There was a long silence before he barked, “The f**k I’m doing that.” His voice sounded hoarse and he irately said, “You’re stuck with me, Kassie. Sooner or later, you’ll realize that you need me.”  Ignoring him, she demanded, “Where are you then? I’ll have someone drop the papers with you.” “It doesn’t matter. Why…why are my bankcards declining?” She chuckled, absolutely satisfied by the tremors in his voice, “Ah…they are linked to the joint account right? I requested a detailed transaction summary from the bank and withdrew all the money I deposited. Not a cent more. Not a cent less. You can use your own personal fund now.”  She put the phone away from her ear when she heard the sharp cry of frustration. When it was over, she listened as he roughly snarled, “Don’t be a b***h, Kassie. How the hell am I going to live?” “So I’m the b***h? How funny. Whether you sign or not, Jason…we’re getting divorced. I’ll take it to court if you don’t.” “f**k, Kassie. f**k! I love you damn it.” “Oh please. Go say that to your mistress.”  He cursed, “I can’t find that f*****g b***h. She’s not answering her phone and she didn’t come  back to her apartment. You have to help me.”  Kassandra felt alarmed when he said that. She ended the call on the spot, not knowing what to do. So where was she? Nauseating thoughts rushed through her mind. What if she got drunk again in some bar? Last time she came here, she seemed to have been doing alright though. Maybe her parents would know where she went.  She began dialing her mother’s number when the intercom buzzed and she remarked, “Charles, I said I’m busy.” “It’s Jillian. The patient’s refusing to cooperate. She’s insisting on meeting you and only you.”  Kassandra cursed under her breath. Of course. She wasn’t even allowed a break. It didn’t matter. She would call her mother later. The patient above all. She grabbed her white coat and barged out, glancing at Emma who was holding Charles off while Jillian had buzzed her.  He cried, gazing at the doctor, “I’m so sorry. I tried to tell them not to disturb you.” Kassandra nodded dismissively, “It’s fine. You couldn’t stop these two brats for all I know.”  She buttoned up her coat, demanding while she walked to the room, “What’s wrong? Is she scared? Nervous?” Jillian sheepishly asked, “Did you just call us brats? We’re not kids, doctor!” Emma cleared her voice, elbowing Jillian, realizing the doctor was in no mood for jokes right now, “She’s a new patient. Name’s Serena Chase. 24 years old. Looks perfectly healthy. Didn't say why she wanted to see you and only you.”  Kassandra stopped right away when her eyes landed on that patient, making both Jillian and Emma clumsily crash against her back. She stared at the woman and Serena simply grinned at her. Kassandra firmly said, noticing the victorious smile splayed on her face, “Leave that one to me.” “Huh? Are you sure?”  Jillian asked in puzzlement, a bit surprised. “Yes.” Jillian pursed her lips as Emma pushed her outside, “Come on. Let's go. The doctor has spoken.” Once they were gone, Serena sighed in frustration, “Will you listen to me now? I’ve taken an appointment!” She watched as the doctor clenched her fists, seemingly holding back from lashing out at her. She bit her lips, having second thoughts now. She looked pissed. “Take off your clothes.” “What?” “You’ve booked an appointment? Good. Now I’ll commence the pelvic exam.” She walked to her tray of tools, raising a scalpel, her eyes boring through hers. “Don’t make me wait. You can change into the blue robe behind the wooden divider there.” Serena gulped as saw the sharpness of that scalpel. She felt intimidated. That was not how she planned things to go. She observed the room for the first time since she walked in, realizing there was one of those scary chairs they used in movies. The kind where the bad guy strapped the hero and performed horrible inhumane experiments on him. Hell no. Then she saw the charts. She stared at them in utter disbelief, “You’re a gynecologist?!” Kassandra wore her mask, her voice colder than she had ever heard her, “I’m an Ob-Gyn. Obstetrician and gynecologist.” She stepped away, nervously laughing, “I just…want to talk.” “Yes we’ll talk. I’m going to give you one minute to get dress.” “Wait Kass—” “One minute. And you’ll address me as doctor. Is that clear?” The moment she turned her back to her, going back to her tools, Serena panicked. There was no backing out of this one. She went behind the wooden divider where she reluctantly took off her jeans and blouse.  She grabbed the blue robe that was hanging there, realizing in horror that it had a huge split in the middle of it. What the f**k. No way in hell she was going to wear something as outrageous as this. She weakly called out, “Er…doctor? I don’t think this is necessary. Haha. I’m hundred percent sure I’m not pregnant!” She flinched when she heard Kassandra’s voice, closer than she thought, “Wear that f*****g robe and take off all of your clothes. I want you naked beneath.” She couldn’t help but blush. Damn it. In what trap has she gotten herself? Slowly she reached behind and unclasped her bra and she shimmied out of her panties. She shoved her clothes aside, feeling completely exposed. There were no cameras, right? Ugh. She wore the blue robe that was surprisingly as light as paper, making sure the split was behind her, hating how exposed she still felt. “Are you done?!” Kassandra impatiently pulled the divider to the side, her eyes widening. Serena shrieked, backing away from her, unable to hide the embarrassment on her face. “I’m…I’m done.” She frowned hard, “You’ve never been to an ob-gyn before?” The woman defiantly raised her chin, putting her hands on her hips, “Of course I’ve been there, plenty of times.” “Do not lie. You’re wearing the dress wrong. The split must be in front.” She gasped when the doctor grabbed the side of the dress and pulled it off her in a single movement. Her arms instantly shot up to cover her breasts, her knees clenched together as she bent, curling on herself. Unfazed by her nakedness, Kassandra ordered, “Stand straight. Arms stretched.” When she didn’t budge and only stared at her with a burning hatred through her loose blonde hair, the doctor gritted her teeth, “I don’t have all the time in the world.”  Reluctantly she straightened herself, shivering as the doctor approached her and made her wear the robe correctly. She slipped her hands through it, feeling hot, knowing how close that darn woman was standing to her. As she hesitantly looked at her face, she realized how tall she was. Her body instinctively moved forward as Kassandra released her and walked back to the main area. In her humiliation, Serena swallowed hard, realizing the split was now in front. She clenched the two sides together, blushing furiously. What was the point in hiding now? The doctor literally saw everything and she hated how impassive she was towards her. Kassandra grabbed the form that Serena had to fill prior to entering the room and shuffled ruthlessly through the pages, “Answer my questions.  Do you have any history of cancer in your family?”  “N-no.”  “Do you smoke?”  “No!”  “Have you ever been vaccinated for HPV?”  “HPV? Uh…yeah?”  She tsked at her uncertainty, “Yes or no?”  “Yes!”  “Good. Have you ever gotten a pap smear exam?”  “What’s that?”  She met her eyes for a moment and said, “Then we’ll need to do this. Tell me about your s****l history.” She felt uncomfortable, “Kass— Doctor! Please…I’m sorry.” She began to get irritated at her, “Answer the damn question. It’s important I know everything.” She twiddled with her thumbs, looking down, “I…I dated a guy in high school but it was just dating. Nothing happened. We did kiss but it was kinda like a fake kiss—” Kassandra groaned, wondering where she was even going with that. “I said s****l, Serena.”  Her name sounded so lovely on her lips and accompanied by that word, it sounded erotic. She opened her mouth to speak and then closed it, words refusing to come out as tears threatened to fall. Kassandra crossed her arms, leaning against her desk, closing her eyes momentarily so as not to lose it with her. “When I started my second year of uni, I was looking for an apartment. Couldn’t afford to pay campus. I met Jason then. He’s a real estate agent, right? He showed me around, found the best deals for me. And from this point, he’d drop by often to see if I was doing well. He…he’s the first…he took my…” “Your virginity, huh?” She blushed hard, nodding. She tried to read the doctor but she was being so aloof right now that she couldn’t help but feel that she might be really angry at her. “Kass…I—” “Keep talking.” She averted her eyes, “Then…we were just dating. For three years I dated only him.” “Three years you said?” She then saw it. The confusion in her eyes before she quickly blinked it away. “Yes. I’m…I’m sorry. I didn’t know he was married. I’m just a fool. He was just using me all this while.” “No, you’re wrong. When was the last time you had s*x? Did you use any kind of protection?” She chewed on her bottom lips, unable to look at her, feeling more and more guilty, “The last time was…a few days before I met you. And yes, we always used protection.” “I see. Fine. Get on the table now. I’ll do the exam.”  She whined, panic surging through her, “I don’t want to.”  ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
