“Oh, come, you know his story. You went to Migdala. He thought he could fight us, too.”
She knew the answer, but she asked the question anyway. “What did you do to him?”
“It was Vulpis"s stroke of genius, you see.”
“What was? What do you mean?”
Carious frowned as he ordered his thoughts into the right words. For some reason he was genuinely taking her questions seriously, giving them due consideration.
“It"s the theatre of the thing, isn"t it?” said Carious. “Vulpis understood that; it was his great insight. He grasped what stories people would believe, what stories would make them think about their lives in different ways. The destruction of Coronade was one example, a message sent to the whole galaxy. The solar shrouds are another example, as are the Void Walkers.”
