“Figures. Being nice because you need something from me.” I nod and lean back into the couch. My appetite disappearing with my disappointment.
“It’s not a huge thing.” He also pushes his food away and lowers the volume on the television.
“I’ll be the judge of that.”
I’m not sure why I’m disappointed that I was right to be suspicious of him.
“It’s my ma. You know how she’s sick?” His eyes cast down, his long thin fingers entwining like a nervous teenager in his lap.

Luca’s mom has been in and out of the hospital for the past month. Vanessa told me she’s going in Monday for a surgery that they’re hoping will correct her erratic, out of rhythm heartbeat, but it’s not a sure fix. Not to mention it’s still heart surgery no matter how you cut it.
