Alpha Callum

1485 Words
I watch as the man walks away, the reality of my situation sinking in. I am now in the devil's lair and I have to play my part perfectly. One mistake, and everything would fall apart. "You must be Luna," Ash greets, her voice smooth and cultured. "I'm Ash, your maid. I'll show you to your room.” She adds. The title Luna makes me feel uncomfortable. " I am not your Luna. It's not confirmed.” I feel like slapping my mouth once the words leave my mouth. Ash smiles. " You are the Alpha's betrothed so that makes you the pack's Luna.” She states yet I catch something fleeting across her eyes. Is it amusement? But then again, I chose to ignore it and focus on my task here; to fool Alpha Callum. I nod ,offering a shy smile that I hoped seemed genuine. "Thank you, Ash. It’s a pleasure to meet you." Ash’s eyes flicker over me,a hint of curiosity and something indescribable lurking beneath her calm demeanour. "I must admit, we were all surprised by your sudden arrival. We thought your pack had bailed on the arrangement.” She says. " I mean, most of his brides end up being forced to fulfil the arrangements.” My heart skips a beat. With all the rumours surrounding Alpha Callum’s supposed brides, how can she be so casual about it? Is this some kind of a test or trap? I force a smile. “ Quite the opposite, I am excited to be here." If she intends to scare me more than I already am, I won't give her the satisfaction. Ash seems taken aback by my response. “ Welcome to the fam. You'll like it here." She says before leading me towards the house. I follow Ash, trying to keep my presence as minimal as possible despite seeing pack members halt to practically stare at me. We step insíde the house and I have to admit, the inside seems more intimidating. High ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and rich, dark wood accents make the space feel both grand and cold. I feel eyes on me, whispers following me as I pass. I don't pay them much attention, just offering a polite smile. Knowing that I am in a foreign land, I dare not try to pass as a b***h. My life is already hard as it is. I don't need more drama or hate from the pack members. I do my best to ignore the murmurs, my hands clenched at my sides to keep from trembling. After showing my room which seemed isolated from the others, Ash took me on a tour around the pack. Everything about the Alpha aside, I have to admit that he is doing an awesome job with his pack. My father's pack is nothing compared to Alpha Callum's territory. What was I expecting anyway? Silver fangs isn't the most powerful pack in the region for nothing. Ash leads me to a spacious drawing room, where several pack members gather. Their conversations halt as I enter. “This is Luna Megan, She is the Alpha's betrothed,” Ash announces, her voice cutting through the silence. I don't miss how she seems to command authority. It's something a mere maid wouldn't be able to pull. However, I don't sense anything special from her. Being wolf less leaves me with that disadvantage. “She’ll be living with us from now on,”She adds. A tall, elegant woman with icy blue eyes steps forward, her gaze appraising. “Welcome to Silver Fangs, Luna. I’m Miranda, the Alpha’s cousin.” Her smile is brittle, almost predatory. “We’ve heard so much about you.” Of Course they did. After all, unlike me, my sister Megan has always been the talk of the pack. Everyone praises her for her beauty, power and wolf strength. I take a moment to digest that I can't be Paige. I need to be Megan or I'll shoot myself right in the foot. I force myself to smile back. “Thank you, Miranda. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone.” The introductions continue, and all I could do is nod and offer a polite smile while nothing etched in my mind. I mean , why would I want to know everyone when I don't even know the fate of my miserable life. I feel the weight of their scrutiny, each polite smile laced with doubt and suspicion. When we finally move on to more casual conversation, I find myself standing alone near the fireplace, the heat doing little to chase away the chill in my bones. Ash has already mingled with the others, leaving me to my thoughts. “Quite the audience, aren’t they?” I jump, turning to see a man leaning casually against the wall, his eyes sharp and amused. He is tall, with dark hair and a confident air that spoke of authority. I bet he is ranked high. Maybe a beta or the gamma. “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there,” I say, recovering quickly. “And you are?” “Just someone who finds sneaking around more fun,” he replies, his smile widening. “I suppose you are having fun?” He inquires and I nod. " It's refreshing to just watch others. I like watching more than participating.” I reply. The man chuckles, “ And everyone said you love the action abit too much." He casually comments but the look on his face makes me shudder. Damn it! How did I slip from my supposed identity. I am supposed to be Megan, acting and behaving like her. I clear my throat to hide how uncomfortable I feel under his scrutiny. “ It's never bad to be different sometimes.” Damn! What nonsense am I even saying? I just hope he doesn't catch me in my act. Otherwise, I'll have to agree with my parents that I am naturally stupid. “ Yeah, I guess." He replies with a nod. I heave a sigh of relief when I sense he believed the crap I just fed him. “ Enjoy your evening, Luna. I'll see you around.” The man says. “Be careful, Luna,” he says, leaning in slightly, “everyone here is waiting for you to fail,” with a wink, he straightens. The words hit me like a slap. I open my mouth to respond, but he has already turned away, disappearing into the crowd. I feel a surge of anger and fear, my fists clenching at my sides. Was this how it would be? Always on edge, always watched, waiting for me to slip up? Dinner is no less daunting. I am amazed how everyone comes together even at the table. This is a new experience for me, considering that even as the Alpha's daughter, sometimes I wouldn't be allowed to join the family at the table. I eat sparingly, aware of every eye on me as the conversation flows around me. The pack members seem a little bit too interested in my life. Turns out, Megan's reputation exceeds her own pack. What was I expecting? She has always been wild and unrestrained. Perhaps that's what the pack members want to see. Only that I am not Megan but her useless sister. I feel a migraine creeping in. I can't wait to be out here and into some privacy. I am afraid I'll lose my cool and that translates to exposing the treason I am currently carrying out. “The Alpha should be here soon,” Miranda says at one point, her gaze fixed on me. “I’m sure he’s eager to meet you.” My stomach twists. I nod, hoping my fear doesn't show. That name alone is enough to throw me off the hooks. I dread the moment I'll see him…again. “I’m looking forward to meeting him as well.” Schooling my emotions, I reply while cursing Miranda inwardly. I can sense hostility from her. What I don't understand is why she would harbour such strong emotions for someone she just met. When dinner ends with no sign of the Alpha, a wave of relief washes over me. But it was short-lived. As Ash escorts me to my room, I can't shake off the feeling of being watched, of eyes tracking my every move. Ash bids me goodnight with the instructions of finding her anytime I need something. “ Thanks.” I whisper. She has been nothing but good to me, something I rarely receive. I don't know if she is sincere but I choose not to dwell on that. I had just begun to relax, slipping off my shoes and letting out a long breath, when the door swings open without warning. I whip my head to the door, heart racing, to see a tall, imposing figure framed in the doorway. Alpha Callum.
