Chapter 3

1736 Words

When Jarrod awoke, he looked around the room in confusion, until his head cleared enough from sleep to recognize the loft in the cabin. Caleb was nowhere to be seen and Jarrod moaned in despair. At least I’m still in the cabin, he thought. That’s a good sign for starters. He scrambled out of bed and climbed down the ladder to the main level. Then he noticed that the sun was shining. I must have slept through the night. As he stepped outside, he noticed how low the sun was in the sky. All night and most of the day, he thought in surprise. The air smelled clean but held the damp mustiness associated with rain. Jarrod scratched the ground with his fingers. The soil had some moisture, but was not muddy. It had to have rained several inches, and the water could not have dried up so fast.
