Sophie's question made Andrew sweat. He was positive his lousy skills would give him away, but he played it cool. “I believe martial arts and boxing are too different, so I won't be able to give you many tips. Sorry.”
Sophia put down her pen. “I believe everything is clear, now. By the way, you said you just graduated from medical school and haven't found a job?"
Andrew's face fell. “It's true. Nowadays, it's quite difficult for graduates to find work. I failed a few interviews for various hospitals, and now I'm aiming to work at a family clinic.”
“I heard that Mr. Lambert and Mrs. Parker both invited you to work for their companies, but you refused,” Anthony remarked.
“I know they just wanted to thank me, but I want to be a doctor. The positions they offered have nothing to do with the medical field, and I don't want to rely on others to get ahead in life,” Andrew answered slowly.
Anthony and Sophia exchanged a look. They appreciated Andrew's idea of standing on his own feet instead of sponging off others.
“Mr. Morrow, you might find this unorthodox, but I might have a job for you. My aunt runs a psychiatric hospital and was looking for a doctor,” Sophie said excitedly.
Psychiatric hospital? Andrew was surprised at first, but he knew it was a good offer after he thought about it. After all, psychiatric hospitals also needed doctors. How come he never thought about submitting resumes to these hospitals? "McLean Psychiatric Hospital, right? I will go there for an interview tomorrow."
Sophia was pleased that she could be helpful. “Okay, then I will give my aunt a call tonight. I believe you have a good chan with your knack for saving people, Mr. Morrow.”
“Thank you very much.”
Andrew was in a good mood when he walked out of the police station. On this day, he saved two beautiful women and landed a possible job. Most importantly, he learned about the existence of the system. From now on, he wasn't an ordinary person anymore.
A bonus was that he was no longer in just his undershirt and boxers. The officers were able to recover his clothes and other belongings that he had discarded before he had jumped into the river. His phone only had a little battery life left, so he used it to add Cassie and Victoria as contacts.
However, Andrew didn't wish to call either of them. He found it difficult who to call first, similar to the dilemma of which woman would get to use him for warmth that night in the cave. Since it was hard to choose, he decided to just let it be.
He was so exhausted that he fell fast asleep as soon as he got home. However, someone else stayed up the whole night.
Cassie laid in her bed with her phone in her hands. She hesitated on whether she should call Andrew or not. It was because she was a mostly reserved person who didn't like to put herself out there. She was also worried about whether he was called Victoria.
At this time, Cassie could hear her parents fighting in the living room.
“I can't believe our daughter tried to take her own life, but if it hadn't been for your mess, she wouldn't have felt the need to,” her mother accused angrily. “Thank goodness Cassie is fine; otherwise, I would have killed you and that bitch.”
“Well, if you hadn't made such a scene, Nora, we would have had a peaceful divorce, and Cassie wouldn't have been so traumatized!” her father countered.
"Peacefully? Keep dreaming. You want to abandon your wife and daughter just for that w***e? I will never let that happen."
"Watch your tongue! Nothing is going on between Andrea and me. She has nothing to do with our divorce!”
"Oh, really? Isn't it because of her that you divorced me?"
Cassie was irritated and tossed her phone on her nightstand before she pulled her covers over her head.
Victoria was also in her room, but she had been calling Andrew all night. Unfortunately for her, Andrew made it a habit to put his phone on mute before sleeping.
Louise sat down on her daughter's bed. “Don't wear yourself, Victoria. I'm sure Andrew is just sleeping.”
“But what if he is calling Cassie? He saved her first, you know, so their bond is deeper. I don't think I even have a chance,” Victoria complained.
Her mother frowned. “Is Andrew truly that special? Do you honestly like him?”
Victoria nodded resolutely. “I'm positive. I know that he looks plain, but he is extremely capable. You should have seen how he saved me from that bomb.”
Louise nodded. “Your father is weak right now, and since he's been in the hospital, we have been considered an easy target. I'm sorry for that.”
“Who is after us, Mom? Last time it was you who was attacked, and now I've been kidnapped. Whoever it is, they have no morals,” Victoria exclaimed.
Sadness filled her mother's eyes. “I think I know. Who is the person who would benefit most from our death?”
“You mean...” Victoria trailed off. “But it can't be! I'm still her sister, after all.”
“It's common for someone to put greed over the lives of others, even their own family. Besides, she's a lunatic. She doesn't think normally, Victoria.”
“She is a lunatic. I can't believe she wanted the company so much that she chose to betray her own sister.”
The next day, after careful preparation, Andrew went to McLean Psychiatric Hospital for an interview.
Rosa Baker, Sophia's aunt and deputy president looked around forty years old and resembled Sophia in appearance. They were both quite charming.
With his resume in her hands, Rosa looked Andrew up and down. She was curious about this self-proclaimed “hero” that her niece had told her about. Rosa had graduated from the well-known Oxford University and had an eye for a man of ability. The young man in front of her wasn't handsome but looked quite energetic.
"You are hired. Someone will arrange for you to go through the required formalities,” Rosa told him.
Andrew couldn't believe it was that simple and wondered if Sophia had pulled some strings. When it came to his past interviews, his rejection mainly had to do with the fact that he hadn't participated in a residency program. It also didn't help that he had no connections in the medical field, so when it came to securing a position through nepotism, it made Andrew feel helpless.
But that feeling didn't last long. He was thankful to Sophia, who helped him land this job, and planned on treating her to dinner sometime.
He went to the personnel department and completed the necessary procedures. From today on, Andrew began his internship at McLean Psychiatric Hospital, which would last three months. During this period, Leo Turner, a senior doctor, would be his supervisor.
Leo was about to retire and was in poor health. Now that Andrew had arrived, it was a weight off his shoulders, so he treated Andrew kindly. “You are a decent guy,” he told him. “I don't have too much profound knowledge to impart on you, but I can definitely set you up for success.”
“Thank you, Dr. Turner. Please let me know if there is anything you need,” Andrew said gratefully.
Leo was pleased by Andrew so far. He then led him into the ward to familiarize him with the environment and the staff members that worked there. McLean Psychiatric Hospital was divided into three units according to the severity level of symptoms of the patients.
Psychiatric hospitals were similar to prisons in that each room was able to be locked from the outside. Depending on what unit it was, there was an open common area where the patients could be supervised at all times. There were also guards stationed at the entrance to each unit at all times in case one of the patients tried to escape.
Andrew knew that all security measures were necessary, as some of the severely mentally ill patients were quite aggressive.
