Chapter 19 - A Visitor

1385 Words
Meanwhile, Andrew passed Lucy a paper cup with some pills inside it. When Lucy stared at him, he nodded his head. “Don't worry, I switched them with placebos. They are sugar pills,” he told her softly.   “Okay,” Lucy eventually said. During the time that Andrew spent with her, his thoughtful and gentle nature deeply moved her. In Andrew, she found a long-lost sense of security. As long as he was by her side, she didn't need to worry about getting hurt.   “If only time could stop,” she whispered without thinking.   Andrew arched an eyebrow. "What did you say?"   "Oh, no, nothing,” Lucy quickly denied.    “Okay, you have taken your 'medication,'” he hinted with a wink. “I'll come back later this evening.”   “You're leaving now?” Lucy didn't want Andrew to go because she hated how lonely and helpless she felt after he left. Although she had coped before Andrew entered her life, Lucy found that she couldn't be that strong again.   “Don't worry, Lucy. I will come back in a few hours, and I won't leave you here alone,” he said with an affectionate tousle of her hair. Andrew and Lucy had gotten more comfortable with each other. Although they were about the same age, he cared for her like she was his little sister.   “I guess...” Lucy pouted. She knew that Andrew couldn't stay here forever.   There was a knock on Lucy's door, and she turned to see her nurse waving for Andrew to come outside.   Andrew got up off the bed. “I have to go. Have a rest, okay?” he told Lucy before he stepped out. He made sure to lock the door behind him.   “Hello, Andrew,” the nurse greeted.   “Hey. How are you doing?”   “Not too bad, thanks for asking,” she answered with a smile. “I just wanted to tell you that reception said that Miss Yates has a visitor.”   Andrew was instantly on alert because there was a chance that the hitman had returned. However, he made sure that his anxiety didn't show on his face. “Who is it? A man or a woman?”   “I don't know because the front desk didn't tell me. You'll find out if you go and see.”   “Got it. Thank you,” Andrew said before he walked down the hall. If the visitor was indeed a threat, he would do his best to stop them from entering.   When Andrew hurried to the hospital lobby, he found a pretty woman standing there. He didn't recognize her, but he was thankful that it wasn't the hitman.    As soon as the nurse at the front desk saw Andrew come out, she pointed to him. "There's Dr. Morrow. You can ask him,” she told the woman.   The girl turned her head towards him, and Andrew was stunned at the first sight of Emily Carter. Her wavy red hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her bright Lambert eyes sucked him in. Her skin was just as pale as Lucy's and seemed to glow in contrast to her dark blue dress.   Though Emily was attractive, Andrew still believed that Lucy was better.    Emily's eyes lit up when she saw Andrew, and she quickly walked towards him. “Hello there, my name is Emily. You're Dr. Morrow, right?”   "Hi... Yes, I am Dr. Morrow..." Andrew replied incoherently.   Emily was amused by Andrew's reaction, but she was all business. "Dr. Morrow, is there a patient you are in charge of named Lucy? I want to visit her, but the front desk said I have to get her attending doctor's signature. So... can you sign it for me?"   When he heard Lucy's name, Andrew came back to his senses. He still didn't know her intention, and he couldn't let his guard down. He had a suspicion that this woman might be Lucy's half-sister who might be responsible for ordering the hit on Lucy.    Andrew folded his arms across his chest. “Lucy's condition is still unstable, so she can't see anyone right now,” he said sternly. “You can leave your number with the receptionist, and I can call you if she gets better.”   Emily was a little surprised by Andrew's cold response. She knew her looks made most men weak in the knees, but the man before her regarded her as if she was a pest. “No, Dr. Morrow,” she protested anxiously. “I had a hard time finding her in the first place, so please let me just look at her quickly, okay?”   Andrew had to admit that he was touched by her pleading eyes, but he still couldn't risk Lucy's life. His mind was caught by something that Emily had said about not being able to find Lucy. Was Emily not aware that Lucy was here? If she was indeed Lucy's half-sister, she would have known where her family member was.   "Well... what is your relationship with Lucy?" Andrew asked after awhile.   “We went to college together and were once roommates. We're very good friends.”   He thought about this carefully for a moment. “Then, as her good friend, how did you not know where she was?”   Emily's face fell. "Lucy kept a low profile in college, and no one knew much about her background, but I befriended her. A year later, someone saw Lucy's father in the newspaper and discovered that she came from a wealthy family. Once everyone learned about it, a lot more people wanted to be her friend.   “Rumours started to swirl that I only became her friend because I knew about her wealth before everyone else did. I couldn't stand what they were saying about us, so I distanced myself from Lucy. I regret doing that if I'm honest.   "But one day I heard that something happened to her family, and when I tried to call her, I couldn't get through. So, I decided to visit Lucy at her house, and a strange woman opened the door. After I told her that I was looking for Lucy, the woman frowned and said she'd never heard of her. But I'm positive that I was at the correct address.   "In the end, I found out that Lucy's mother passed away and that she was sent to a mental hospital. I searched all of the mental hospitals in the city, and this was the last one. Thank goodness I finally found her! I beg you, Dr. Morrow, I just want to see that she is okay.”   When he saw Emily's tear-filled eyes, he was surprised that Lucy had such a friend. If what Emily said is true, then she was a genuinely kind and sincere friend. But Andrew knew this was just one side of the story; he still needed to confirm it with Lucy.   “Alright,” Andrew said with a sigh. “Go back to the front desk and fill out some forms, and I will go see Lucy to see how she is doing. I will let you visit with her if she's alright.” His tone was softer than it was when he first spoke with Emily.    Emily gasped. “Oh, thank you, Dr. Morrow. Thank you so much!”    “You're welcome. Just wait here, and I will return shortly.”   "Andrew... what kind of person are you?" Lucy muttered while she lay in her bed. Since he became her attending doctor, she no longer sat in front of the window. Instead, she laid down and waited for Andrew. She killed time with sleep as if time would fly faster this way.   Suddenly, the sound of the key turning in the lock of her door startled Lucy. She sat up quickly and frowned. That's strange; it isn't time for Andrew to come back yet. Who's there? She didn't want to talk to anyone except Andrew.   “Lucy? There's a woman who's come to see you,” Andrew said gently.   Lucy's face blanched immediately, and her whole body started to shake. She pulled the sheets over her head to hide. “No! No!” she shouted. “Get her out of here!”
