An hour later, Jack had finished his second cup of coffee, the Morning News crossword puzzle, and the cryptogram—in pen, and he was proud of that—and he glanced over the list he’d made. The faucet in the kitchen sink was leaking, the window in the back door needed to be re-caulked, and he’d noticed one of the slats in the backyard fence needed to be replaced. Although Tom didn’t do repairs, the people who had owned the house before he bought it had a workbench set up in a corner of the garage, and Tom had left it there.
