Chapter 7

She woke up when she felt someone poking her ribs. She didn't want to wake up so she kept her eyes closed but the poking continued until a voice said, "Look at you, wanting to be carried inside. Don't you know that you weigh a ton?” it was Mike's voice. She opened one eye to find Mike starring at her with a self-satisfied smirk on his face. Lana couldn't help but playfully punch his shoulder while a small smile made its way across her face and Jim chuckled at their actions. That's when Lana realized that the car was parked so she leaned across Jim to look out the window, only to come face to face with her home. The two story house still sat the same way she remembered it and in the light of the dying sun it seemed like a distant memory. She quickly got out of the car after Jim and hurried to the door, it seemed that her father and Jodie were already inside since they were not in the car when she woke up. Opening the door she rushed to the kitchen to find her mother standing by the stove while wringing a cloth, it was an old habit of hers that reared its head when she was nervous. "Lana, my baby", her mother exclaimed while rushing to envelope her in a tight hug. "Mom... I'm not a baby anymore", she whined while squirming in her mother's arms. "That's nonsense, you know that you will always be my baby, even when you are grey and old", her mother said while pulling back from the hug. Lana looked at her mother and gave her a reassuring smile. Her mother was still beautiful and radiant as ever but the lines on the edges of her eyes and forehead betrayed her, her mother was obviously stressed and this made Lana even sadder. "Go freshen up and I'll have you brought something to eat", her mother said, giving her a small smile. "I love you mom", Lana hugged her mother. This time it was her mother who was squirming while laughing lightly. "And who said that she wasn't a baby anymore? I love you too honey, go on now", she said while pulling back from the hug before she shooed her out of the kitchen. It was good to finally be home but Lana couldn't help but feel that something was missing, her mate, hence being home was sort of bitter sweet. After trudging up the stairs she came to a door she knew better than any other door in the whole wide world, her bedroom door. She opened the door and walked inside the light room, everything was as it was a year ago when she came for her sister's wedding. The twin beds were still in their original positions, she had shared this room with her older sister, Lisa, who is two years older than her. She looked at the walls and remembered posters of rock bands that used to hang there and the laughter and secrets that were exchanged in that room. She looked at her sister's old bed and sauntered to it before she plopped down. She giggled feeling a little bit rebellious, she thought of her sister's reaction when she was caught years ago doing what she was doing then and grimaced a little. "You do know that Tod and I did it on that bed", a very familiar voice brought her out of her thoughts. She jumped up from the bed as if it was on fire and looked at her sister who was holding a tray and smiling smugly by the doorway. "Ew… Lisa! What happened to kicking my butt off the bed, nearly bursting my ear drums or the mommy method?” Lana cried out while dusting invisible specks here and there and cringing a bit. Lisa laughed at her sister's reaction before walking into the room. "Oh, come on I knew that would be the fastest way to get you off my bed. I have been saving it for years, first you were too young, then you left for college and when you came to visit I had already moved in with Tod. Besides mom said that you were freshening up but from what I see you are busy making butt prints", Lisa said as she placed the tray on the nightstand. "Wow! Lisa you are so... huge", Lana exclaimed gasping at her sister's stomach. "Yah, yah, yah, Tod and I have been busy and it was never on this bed, mom would have a fit before that happens even if I am married", Lisa said before sitting down on her old bed. "Come sit down with me", Lisa requested patting the spot next to her. Lana hesitated for a bit but her sister gave her a reassuring smile and with a sigh she did sit down. "I guess mom told you about my situation", Lana began, picking up the bowl of chicken soup from the tray and putting it on her lap. "Yes, she did and am really sorry but there has to be a reason why he chose uhm… is with her", her sister replied. Lisa wanted to say chose but figured that it would be insensitive, it's not nice to hear that someone was chosen over you. "There is, he said that when he first met her she felt like his mate but now that I've come along he is convinced that I am his mate but there is still a little part of him that thinks that Jessica is his mate", she tried to explain. "That's messed up. I have never heard of werewolves having two mates at the same time, that would be one messed up three some.” Lana chuckled at her sister's words. "So how long have they been together?” Lisa asked. "That's the funny part, it's not that funny but you get the idea. They met while Jessica and I were in senior year", Lana gave a little laugh but it held no humour. "What! Did you know about this?” Lisa exclaimed while looking stunned. "No, she never said a word until she called me two weeks ago asking me to be her maid of honour", Lana explained. She was half way through her bowl and when she didn't feel like eating more she put down the bowl. "I knew it, I knew that girl couldn't be trusted, she is nothing but trouble. You are her best friend and she is only telling you this now, like seriously? Best friends don't keep secrets from each other", Lisa stated. "Lisa, it's not like I told her that I was a werewolf and that every guy she dated might be my potential mate, and stop being so darn paranoid", Lana retorted. "Oh come on Lana, we both know that if you had told her what you are you would have been putting her life at risk. There are some werewolves that don't want humans to know of our existence and they would go to any lengths to make sure that it stays that way. So stop changing the topic", Lisa spat back. She knew that Lana was just avoiding talking about Jessica and of all werewolves, Lisa would gladly be the first to burn Jessica alive if she ever came to know of their existence. "Lana, of all things we both know that Jessica has been nothing but a terrible friend to you and believe me friends aren't supposed to be like that. Not only that but she hid Alex from you, if she had told you about him years ago, we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place", Lisa rambled on while pacing the room. Lana just looked down at her lap while playing with her fingernails. She didn't know what to say to that. Lisa looked at her sister and her anger died down. She went over to her and sat down beside her. "Lana I know how Jessica was back in high school, sure we didn't go to the same high school but I know for a fact that you are totally opposites. There is one thing that I don't understand though, why are you even friends?” she asked softly. Lana opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out, she proceeded to wreak her brain trying to come up with an answer. It shouldn't have been hard to come up with a reason yet she came up with none. That's when she realized that even she didn't know why they were friends or maybe she did but did not want to admit it. After all the truth does hurt.
