Chapter 7Once outside, I thought I had lost Karl. There were lots of people on Lincoln Avenue, but not one of them looked like him. I turned and looked north, where the el tracks made a kind of bridge over the street, and didn’t see him. I looked south, where I could see downtown’s buildings in the distance, but no Karl. I hurried to the corner, looked east on Wilson Avenue, and spotted him. He was rapidly heading east, casting looks every few minutes or so behind him. Probably worried that I had taken it upon myself to do the very thing I was doing. It didn’t take him long to spot me. He stopped in his tracks, and even from the distance of half a block or so, I could tell he blew out a frustrated sigh.
