(Rose)
The man in front of me was severely wounded and stuck in the middle of a shift, which was very strange. Wolves automatically shift to their human form when wounded. Shifting to human form allows the wolf to rest and prepare for the healing process, but this person was half-wolf, half-man. Only one thing was capable of making a wolf unable to complete his shift.
James quickly lifted him onto the stretcher and helped wheel him into the hospital.
"I found him while I was coming back from my morning run. I don't think he is a member of this pack" said Rio.
Rio was one of the wolves in the hospital. He was currently one of our top physiotherapists in charge of rehabilitating wounded wolves.
I quickly ran to notify the pack doctor, Dr. John, of the new patient we had.
"We have an emergency, Dr.," I said, barging into his office panting.
He quickly stood up and followed me to the room where the man was wheeled in.
"This is strange, a half-shifted wolf. From the look of things, his pack's mark seems to have been cut off with a sharp object. He has a clean cut on his left shoulder. Rose, we need to run some tests to be sure, but for now, we need to help force his body to complete his shift," he said.
I quickly hastened to gather the requirements needed while silently praying to the moon goddess to preserve his life.
Gold dust is usually used in our pack to induce shifts, and I hoped it would work on this wolf. We have never had a case like this before.
"Okay, kindly steady his hand so I can inject the medication," said Dr. John.
I helped steady his hand for the drug to be given. Within minutes, the wolf completed his shift and became human again.
A knock on the door interrupted me while I was observing the man before me.
"Here are his test results, Dr. John," said Emmy.
Emmy is in charge of running tests on our patients. He was my friend and always looked out for me.
"Just like I suspected. He was poisoned with wolfsbane," said Dr. John.
"Wolfsbane? Isn't it forbidden among packs?" I asked in surprise.
"Yes. Wolfsbane is forbidden, but it looks like someone out there has been using it on wolves. We need to report this to the Alpha; we can't keep this to ourselves," replied Dr. John.
I thought that someone using wolfsbane against wolves sickened me. Who would do such a sick thing?
Wolfsbane was poisonous to all wolves including Alphas. It was banned by the council because of how much damage it does to wolves but it looks like someone decided to break their orders.
"Rose! He's coding. Bring the adrenaline," shouted Dr. John in panic.
I handed the adrenaline in a stringer over to him. The man's heartbeat was unsteady.
"He's gone," sighed Dr. John.
"Isn't there something else we can do?" I asked.
Dr. John bent his head slightly while rubbing his forehead and replied, "We can only help sick and wounded wolves. We can't take their souls back from the Moon goddess. I'm sorry, my dear."
Tears quickly gathered in my eyes. I didn't know the man before me, but it hurt me to think of how much pain he was in before he died. His pack's mark was cut off showing that he was probably exiled. I hoped whoever was responsible for his death would be caught soon.
I left to attend to other patients in the pack hospital.
I knocked on the door of my favorite patient; Mrs Adams.
"Come in" she replied.
"Good morning Mrs Adams" I greeted.
"Oh, Accalia. You look as beautiful as ever" she said.
I laughed. "I keep telling you I'm Rose not Accalia"
She always called me Accalia from the very first time I met her. For some reason, she refused to accept that my name is Rose.
She shook her head and replied; "Do not change your name. It was given to you by the Moon Goddess herself. Always remember that my dear."
I refused to argue further and went to assist her with her medications.
"Your wolf is uneasy my dear," she said suddenly.
My wolf?
I don't have a wolf. I have never shifted before.
"I don't have a wolf" I replied.
She looked at me and smiled.
"The moon goddess knew what she was doing while she was giving you your wolf. One day, you will understand why she named you Accalia" she said.
I shook my head and continued my task.
"I'll be back tomorrow to check on you Mrs Adams," I said.
"Bye, my dear. The moon is with you" she replied with a smile.
I waved at her and left her room. I kept pondering what she told me.
Mrs Adams is the oldest member of our pack. At 390 years old, she still stood strong but her memory is not as sharp as it used to be. She was always talking to people no one could see or hear. I shrugged off the thought of all she said counting it as one of the symptoms she presented over the years which made the Alpha insist she should be monitored in the pack hospital.
A hand covered my eyes and stopped me in my steps.
"Guess who?"
"Emmy, take your hands away from my eyes please," I said while smiling.
"Of course, you would know it's me," he said as he removed his hands from my eyes.
"Have you heard about the annual ball coming up?" he asked.
I sighed thinking of how excited Amelia was about it this morning. It was said the ball was the place where most wolves found their mates but I knew I didn't have a mate. I am not even sure that I'm a wolf.
"Moon to Rose. Hello? What are you thinking?" asked Emmy.
"Nothing much. I heard my mom talking about the ball this morning" I answered.
"So... will you attend?" asked Emmy.
"I'm not sure my parents would let me. You know I'm not allowed to attend parties" I replied.
"Okay girl, first of all, you are an adult and should be allowed to do what you want. How will you find your mate if you never come out? I can't stand to think a hot wolf is out there looking for his mate which is you by the way and you're always indoors washing dishes" he said while pouting.
" I am perfectly okay being alone Emmy" I replied.
He faked gasping while placing his hand on his chest dramatically.
"Hell no. I do not agree. You are destined for someone whether you like it or not. The moon goddess never makes mistakes. I hope to find my mate at the ball. I hope he's as sexy as me". he said dreamily.
It is said that each wolf is made up of half a soul so wolves need their mates to be complete and feel whole.
"Whatever you say, Emmy," I said while chuckling at his reactions.
I looked up and saw the Alpha approaching towards us. I quickly bowed in respect.
"Welcome Alpha" Emmy and I said unanimously.
"Thanks. Where's Dr John?" he asked.
I pointed to his office and the Alpha made his way there.
"Looks like he is aware of the dead wolf," Emmy said as the Alpha left.
I really hoped everything would turn out fine and the person responsible for the death of the wolf would be found.
"Rose" the familiar voice called out to me again.
