Chapter 5

2007 Words
Stacey didn't know what to do. She kept looking at Edzel while she was listening to her best friend over the phone. She was thinking how she would tell Edzel that she needed to leave and go to the hospital. With the anger that the man had for her, she doubted if he could understand her situation and at the same time, how could she tell him about her children? This was the last thing that she wanted to happen. She wasn't ready yet for the man to know her status in life. Why of all days, it needed to happen today? She held her mobile phone tightly because she started to feel like her knees were turning into jelly because of what her best friend was telling her about her daughter and at the same time not knowing how to tell Edzel that she had to leave. "He--- hello, Stacey, are you still there?" Ariana's voice brought her back to reality. "Did you hear what I said? I need you to be here because there are papers that need to be signed by the family and they didn't want me to do it," she added. "Ye--- yes, I am sorry. I am coming there now," she replied stammering because she didn't know yet if Edzel would allow her to leave. "I just need to talk to my boss," she added while she was thinking about how to start talking to Edzel. She ended the call and she felt like her shoulders had heavy objects on top of them. She couldn't hide the panic and worry that mixed up inside her. Panic and fear because of the man in front of her. How could she say that she needed to leave and see her daughter that was rushed to the hospital without making Edzel think anything? Would even the man believe her after what she had done to him a couple of years ago? She looked at Edzel and she found the man staring at her blankly. She couldn't read what was running inside his mind. The man was drinking his coffee but he didn't take his eyes away from her. It seemed that he could be wondering who called her and what was the call about. Because of that, she decided to speak with him. Stacey took a deep breath. She had to get all the courage that she could have before she spoke. Her daughter needed her. She was waiting for her and the more that she delayed this, the longer that her daughter was waiting for her at the hospital. And the longer that she takes to arrive there, the more that worry overwhelms her because she doesn't know what's happening to her daughter. Stacey had already decided. She didn't care even if Edzel would get angry at her or even if he would terminate her. She didn't care even if she lost this job because if she wouldn't leave now then she was putting her daughter's life at risk. The hell that she cared about what Edzel would think of her. "Sir, I am sorry but I need to leave and go to the hospital now," she said in a low voice just enough for Edzel to hear what she said. She saw how his eyebrows furrowed when he heard what she said. "Why? What happened? Who's in the hospital?" Edzel asked one after the other. She didn't know if he was concerned or not. He spoke so fast and she didn't know if he was concerned or he just wanted to know why she needed to go to the hospital. She didn't know if he was just interested to know why suddenly, she acted to be in a rush to leave. She looked at him but quickly diverted her gaze in a different direction. She still didn't have the strength to meet his eyes. She couldn't stand the anger and accusing eyes that he had. If Edzel wouldn't agree, she would leave even without his permission. "My d--- daughter fainted and they brought her to the hospital. They needed to sign me some papers before they could treat her," she explained to him as she silently hoped that he would understand that situation. "Alright, you should be quick then. Let me drop you," Edzel replied, which shocked her. She couldn't believe that the man even offered to drop her at the hospital instead of getting angry and terminating her. Does it mean that Edzel still has a big heart and he understood her situation? "But si--- sir, didn't you mention earlier that you have a meeting? You might get late and you still haven't eaten your breakfast yet," she mumbled as she looked at the food at the top of the table. The man only drank his coffee but he didn't touch that food that she prepared for him like what he requested earlier. The man shook his head. Edzel looked at her with a gaze she couldn't explain. The man stopped midway. His eyebrows were almost touching each other's end as if he couldn't understand what he said. He looked like she had spoken a language that wasn't familiar to him. "Who's the boss here?" He suddenly asked her in a firm tone. "You, sir," she replied and Edzel just nodded as if he was asking her if she understood what he meant. She nodded her head without any choice. She didn't want to piss him off because he might refuse to allow her to go to the hospital. Though, she couldn't take away the fear that started to rise inside her. The fear that her children would meet Edzel. She didn't expect this encounter to happen. They went straight to the elevator and headed down to the basement. She had no idea that Edzel car was park at the basement of the hotel. She caught her breath when she saw the man's car. It was the latest edition of a sports car. As soon as Edzel got closer to it, it lit up and then she heard the clicking sound, a sign that it was unlocked. It was not surprising for her anymore that the man owned this kind of luxury vehicle because five years ago, she found out that Edzel was the sole heir of the Swift holders. He could own as much as he wanted a car like this. "Tell me," he said. "Which hospital?" Edzel asked as soon as they were inside the car. "Just the city hospital," she replied. It was just a public hospital where she could get her daughter checked because bringing her to the private hospitals would cause a fortune and she didn't have the capability to do that. Silence was between the two of them. Both of them seemed to be occupied. Edzel volunteered to drop her in the hospital because he was interested to know and to see Stacey's husband. He was wondering why the man let Stacey work when their child was sick and obviously, Stacey needed to stay on the child's side. He couldn't help but shake his head while his eyes were still focused on the road. If Stacey just married him then she didn't have to experience this kind of life. He wouldn't let her work and she would just be at their house to be a full time housewife. He would be taking care of everything that they needed. She just needed to be a good wife and a good mother. Actually, he didn't know what to think of. Even without a word, he knew that the woman sitting beside him was worried. He couldn't understand that despite the anger, he still felt a bit of pity for the woman because of her child's situation. She was rushed into the hospital but there was no one that could look after her except for her mother who was working. And the big question in his head now, was, where was his husband? While for Stacey, she was wondering why the man wanted to drop her when he said that he had a meeting. The moment that she went inside the presidential suite, he already expressed that he couldn't be late and she needed to prepare the breakfast as quickly as he could. But, why was he driving her to the hospital? She was silently praying on their way to the hospital that Edzel wouldn't recognize her children. She was hoping that he wouldn't be asking about their father and he wouldn't get interested in her children. Though struggling in life, she and her children were living peacefully and that was something that she didn't want to take away from them. She couldn't imagine what would happen if Edzel discovered the truth. The truth that she had concealed for a long time and now, she didn't know for how long she could still hide it because their paths crossed again. On top of the money that they needed to save for the surgery, they also needed a donor for Carla's bone marrow because Carlo was not matched with his twin sister. So, she had to pay for the donor just in case she found someone. She was praying hard every night that a good samaritan would donate it instead. Edzel was the father of her children but she didn't want him to know about that. It would be a big problem for the man, especially, it was not hidden to her knowledge that his mother was against their relationship. She didn't want to stress her children to a family scandal that may happen if her secret would be unveiled even though she knew that it could also help her children especially in Carla's situation but she kept herself silent. She knew that it would not be easy for them to accept her and her children because she came from a poor family and on top of that, her mother became one of their servants. Stacey couldn't help but imagine the worst. What if they found out her children's father was Edzel and they would take them away from her? Fear overwhelmed her just simply thinking about it. She couldn't imagine that her children were away from her. Suddenly, she looked at Edzel and then she was about to ask him to drop her in a nearby bus station but it seemed too late for her to do that. Before she could even speak, the car already stopped in front of the City Hospital. She didn't even realize that it was already parked because of all the things that were running inside her head. "We are here. Let's go. Your daughter is waiting for you," Edzel said, which made her frown. Did she hear him correctly? A sudden panic surged through her. "A--- are you coming with me?" She asked, stammering. "Yes," Edward said as his eyebrows drew together." Is there any problem?" "I--- I thought that you were going to a meeting. Aren't you going to be late?" She asked him. She could hear her heart pounding so fast. "I should be fine. You don't have to come with me inside the hospital. Thank you for dropping me here. I will come back to the hotel as soon as I have sorted everything out for my daughter," she said without breathing. Edzel's face suddenly turned dimmed. "Why does it seem that you don't like me to get inside? Who am I? I am your boss, right? Who are you to tell me what I should do?" Edzel said in a domineering tone which made her stunned. She suddenly felt embarrassed. Her cheeks were getting hot. The man was right. Who was she to tell him what to do and stop him from going inside the hospital? Wasn't she being ungrateful for that kind of act? "I am sorry," she mumbled and then she bowed her head. She bit her lower lips and the next thing that she heard was a loud sound of the car as it closed.
