River POV
My poor Kimmie.
Gazing lovingly at my dear mate, who was sleeping yet again, I could not help but feel helpless. I knew she had been going through difficult times and beating herself out emotionally because of our problem of not conceiving a baby yet.
There were a lot of people in the kingdom who had been asking about their queen, if she had already conceived an heir. Our answer would always be that we were still busy integrating two kingdoms and one coven to think of having a child and that we were still young and would want to wait.
A few people could be so annoying and ungrateful. One time over breakfast, one said, “If only Suzette was alive and they had mated with her, then we could already have our future king or queen now. A pure werewolf at that. Not some hybrid.”
It only took a low growl to make the room quiet. The woman had her head in embarrassment. Fortunately, Kimberly ate quickly and already left that morning to go to the daycare center. It would have felt devastating. I would have ripped the lady off for saying it in front of us. The audacity!
Ryder held my arm and took over. He stood up and looked over our pack. I would have banished the lady right then and there.
“Your Queen is with us for quite sometime now. You knew she was our mate from the start and we did not hide it from you. You have seen her abilities. She has shown you kindness and compassion and this is what you will show her? She had risked her life to save all of us. Or would you rather a lunatic warlock with rogues as cronies would rule over you? And, please, in respect of our mate and of the Beta family, leave Suzette in peace. Perhaps you have forgotten what she has done to our kingdom.” He paused and made eye contact with the people. “If you are against your Queen Luna, you are against your Alpha Kings. You are free to step out of the kingdom and never come back. Do you understand?”
The members bowed down and murmured their affirmation.
This should be one of my proudest moments, to see Ryder defend our mate in front of our pack. He had been firm and the strong aura that emanated from him even had my wolf amazed, making him proud, too.
After the message from the Moon Goddess had been heard, the energy that came from within must be too much for Kimberly. She had fainted after and Ryder had to take her back to our room, while I dealt with The Oracle even when I was really worried about her well-being.
I would have questioned her. The Moon Goddess is upset that we chose not to have a baby before the war? However, I could not voice it out as to not further disappoint the Moon Goddess. At least, she still favored the three of us and had given us a chance.
“You do not have to worry, Alpha. She will be alright. Let her rest though and she will have her strength back.” The Oracle looked at me as if she was expecting me to say anything. However, I just nodded. After a few seconds, she turned her back at me and took her staff from the side of the sofa where she had sat earlier.
“I am done here, Alpha. You do not have to show me the way out. I know the way already.” She chuckled. She was about to bow down her head before going out of the room, but I halted her.
“I do not know anything about the purple dusk,” I blurted out.
“Me too, Alpha. I am here to be the bridge between you and the Moon Goddess. I do not even know why I was chosen to be here, but I do not question her motives.” She looked at me knowingly. I gulped as if to appear guilty of what I had done earlier. I did question the Moon Goddess, but only in my thoughts. “I am a witch. I only do what I do best. I may be old and know a lot of things. However, there are things that are only for the werewolves. But better to be fast, Alpha. You never know when the purple dusk will come.”
The f**k. Where would I find someone who knows about the purple dusk? Is there even such a thing? I only know about the blue moon.
“I know you wouldn’t want to see me again. However, I feel we have another visit is due again in the future.”
I almost groaned but held it in.
“You are always welcome here…”
I didn’t even know what to call her! I didn’t know her name!
“…we welcome the news that we are given a chance. At least we know now where the problem lies. Thank you for coming. If there is anything we could help you with or if you would like us to get you something, please, let me or my brother know.”
“I live my life with less. I have no need of material things. Thank you.” She then bowed her head and started to walk out of the room. The staff was something more for defense, I think, or she had her powers there. I could see that she could walk perfectly fine, a rare happening for an old woman like her.
My eyes then looked at the coffee table where her snacks were left untouched.
“You did not even drink your coffee. Would you like something else?”
“No, need, Alpha. I need to head out. Thank you anyway.” She continued on her way without even looking back at me.
I immediately mind-linked our kitchen staff to prepare some food for The Oracle to bring on her way. They had better do it fast and give the package to her before she slips out of the palace.
“My staff will be giving you some food to bring on your way. Please do accept,” I called out as I followed her. I should also go and check out Kimberly.
The Oracle did not even reply and had disappeared on the corner on the way out of the palace. I ran the other way and saw Kimberly lying down on the bed.
“How is she?” I asked Ryder.
“I don’t know. She looks okay to me, but she uttered the message one time,” Ryder replied as he kissed Kimberly’s knuckle.
“So even in her dream state, she’s still thinking about it.”
Ryder then stood up.
“Where are you off to?” I questioned, as I did not know of any work we had to do at that moment. Dad and Mom would be visiting later, but that was still for dinner.
After the three of us had taken over the kingdom, Dad and Mom had transferred to a smaller house at the east end of the border. We would see each other often. Too often for my liking, as Mom had also been asking for a pup already.
“I would be off to the library to find something about this purple dusk. Let me know when Kimberly has woken up.”
For someone to be smart, I completely forgot that we had an extensive library in the palace. I was completely out of my element earlier and forgot that we also had elders in the pack.
“Or ask the elders in our pack if you have time. I could go and visit them this afternoon, should Kimberly be fine.”
Ryder left the room and silence enveloped me and my mate. Staring at my mate, I could not help but be thankful for her coming into my life, into our lives. I couldn’t ask for a better mate. Not only was she so stunning in appearance, but her soul was also genuinely beautiful.
I reminisced the time when we first met in the Royal Senior High Academy. She looked so innocent, with Ryder always embarrassing her. Her cheeks would turn crimson red, making her even more gorgeous. Her smile would always make my heart flutter; her laughter was infectious. Her dedication to her studies and training had made her more amazing than she already was. An amazing, gorgeous, badass witch. A woman like no other.
“I wonder what our child will be like. A hybrid. Part witch and part werewolf. He or she will be really special.” I brushed her hair gently and kissed her temple so lightly.
It was not long after when her lips moved and uttered once again the message from the Moon Goddess. It didn’t worry me at all. Her voice even soothed me heart. A few minutes later, she was muttering yet again. However, this time, it was a name.
“Kendra.”
