“Officer, what is happening here?” Diane asking the officer in charge when they apprehended Asher.
“Excuse us, Miss, we are going to ask some questions to Mr. Asher.”
“Okay, then asking him, here!”
Diane brazenly challenges the local officers, makes Asher impressed by her personality even more. He smiles at Diane.
“Ms. Diane, it’s okay, I think there has been a misunderstanding, so I should go with them for now.”
Asher, even though already politely rejected her trying to defend him, Diane stubbornly standing in front of him with a very obvious sass with her demeanor.
“Asher, what happened?”
Asher’s father, Mr. Gregory Poitier, entering the milk stand with a worried face, the small milk tea stand now is awfully crowded.
“It’s okay, Dad, the officers just want me to go to the station for now.”
“What? What happened?”
Mr. Poitier turns around to ask the two officers.
“Just to follow-up questions, sir, because the pickpocket that someone apprehended earlier had some bruises on his face, so, we need to take all the people that involve.”
Diane once again confronts the officers. “If you want to questions everyone, why not bringing me along as well, after all, I was his victim!”
The two officers looking at each other, trying to find a good reason for Diane, but there’s nothing, one of them gives out a long sigh and tells Diane and Asher to come with them to the patrol car.
“Your mom and I will catch up with you there.” Mr. Poitier talking at his son.
“Bring Brandon, he knows what to do.”
He nodded and taking Mrs. Poitier's hand; she looks so worried but trust her husband. Diane and Asher go inside the patrol car together.
On the way to the police station, Asher takes a good look at the woman beside him. She’s actually a very cute woman, with a good body, he’s a man, and knows his preference. Her dark brown long hair, with her brown eyes, remind him about falls, all the fallen leaves, the cold weather sky, waiting for the winter.
“Excuse me?”
He is staring at Diane tentatively, not realizing how creepy he actually is.
“Oh, I am so sorry, Miss, I… I just got so fascinated by your face.”
“What?”
Diane is flabbergasted, though she wants to ask more about it, the car finally reaches the station. She glares at Asher, while the latter just smile with confidence.
Diane huffing and exiting the car, but Asher grabs her arm.
“Wait, before we go inside the station, I… I just want to say, thank you.” Asher looking around, like he is going to say something embarrassing and doesn’t want anyone near him. “I… I know that you want to accompany me to the station, that was one of the most unselfish acts a woman has ever done for me.”
She looks at Asher’s, his face flush with a shade of red right now, Diane is smiling and chuckling at him.
“You’re welcome, Mister…”
“Please, just Asher.”
“Okay, you’re welcome, Just Asher.” Diane jokingly makes a play with Asher’s name, making him chuckle and admiring her more, Diane, smiling back at Asher. “Oh, you can call me, Diane, with no Miss.”
“Alright, Diane with no Miss.” Teasing Asher’s back.
Both of them have some fun time teasing each other, inside the station, Asher, Diane, and some of the locals sitting together waiting to be questioned, while the local police gathering some more backups.
Ten minutes have passed, the station main door open once more, Mr. Poitier coming inside the station with a tall and well-dress man, it’s Brandon, Diane and Asher looking at him, he raises his hand while talking on the phone.
“Yes, I’m inside the station now, I don’t know what’s happening, but I’ll keep in touch.”
Brandon and Mr. Poitier talking with the one in charge trying to get an explanation, he then walking towards Diane and Asher, Brandon hugs his best friend, while patting his back.
“Hey, how are you two doing?” He said to Diane and Asher.
“Fine, actually, the officers are treating us nicely, I think all of this is just some kind of misunderstanding.”
“Actually, it is, you remember the pickpocket that takes your bag?”
“Yes, I release him already, I say that I have forgiven him.”
“Well, he claims that Asher and some of the locals were beating him.”
Asher and Diane looking at each other, Asher curses, Diane even has an urge to calm him down.
“Asher, I think it’s best for you to now saying any words.”
Says Brandon, Asher then looking at Diane.
“What about Diane?”
“Well, I’m here to become a witness, Asher, I could go after they take my statement.”
Asher and Brandon looking at Diane with a curious look.
“I am sorry for asking, but are you in any way?” asks Brandon to Diane.
“A lawyer? No, I am not, but I have a law degree.”
“Oh…” Both of them now looking at Diane in a new light.
Diane giggling when she recognizes their looks. “Why are you both looking at me like that? I am a 29 years old woman, of course, I’ve already gone to college.”
“Yes, of course, but we never actually think that you have a law degree.”
Diane cringe a bit, she reluctant to answer both of them about the fact, she’s not only has a law degree but she has a master's degree in law.
“Well, rest assure, I’m not going to leave you here, after what you have done for me.”
Asher smiles gratefully at her, while Brandon now sees Diane in a very different light, at first he thought she was just a gullible nice young lady, but she’s actually a smart and capable young woman.
“I am so sorry.” Brandon unknowingly said the words to Diane.
“Why do you said sorry to me?”
“Oh… it’s because you got mugged, of course.”
Diane looking at him with a funny look. “Okay…”
One officer calls Diane to the interrogation room, she excuses herself, leaving Brandon and Asher behind.
“Seriously, she’s a kind woman, why do her friends treat her worse?” Brandon asks Asher, while both of them staring at Diane walking away.
“I have no idea.”
Diane walking outside the station, wanting to buy some refreshments, she feels parched, she wants to look for a 24-hours mini-mart. She doesn’t realize that Brandon actually follows her from behind.
“Going somewhere?”
“Oh my God! You almost gave me a heart attack.”
Brandon chuckles, his sharp eyebrows are lifted, looking at her comical expression.
“Sorry, I want to follow you, because it’s almost midnight and I don’t want you to go alone without anyone.”
She smiles gratefully, and asks him to accompany her to the nearest 24-hour mini-mart, they walk side by side at the roads, dim light by the street lights and the combination of bushes by the small garden around them, giving them a very warm atmosphere, they like it.
“So, you’re not exactly brothers, aren’t you?” Diane initiates a small talk.
“Yes, Asher, Callum, and I aren’t exactly brothers by blood, but our parents are close, so, you could say that we actually already brothers, but with no blood relation.”
He is staring at the sky, smiling remembering their times together since childhood. “Though, we consider ourselves closer than some siblings out there.”
“That’s so nice, I envy you, truly, I don’t have any siblings, and even relatives.”
Brandon abruptly stops and looking at Diane. “You don’t have a family?”
She turns around and smiles at Brandon. “No, I’m an orphan since I was a little girl, thankfully, God, given me a quick-thinking, so I got scholarships and then a good job in a very good company, and well, friends.”
Brandon smiling back at Diane and deliver a heartwarming comment for her. “Well, you also have us, now.”
“I do?”
They stare at each other, until two locals whistle towards their direction, both of them finally laughing and feeling a bit embarrassed.
“Oh, look, there’s the mini-mart.” Said Brandon with a sigh of relief.
“Oh yes, let’s go, I am so parched, I’ll buy us some drinks. I think those poor locals are already hungry and thirsty as well.”
Together they enter the mini-mart and taking mineral waters and some pre-heated bento and loaves of bread.
“Yes, I heard their testimony, it’s actually absurd to think that some of them beat the kid until he got a concussion.”
Diane, turn around to Brandon, who couldn’t believe what she just heard. “Concussion?”
“Yes, that’s what the kid said, he’s in the hospital with his guardian now.” Brandon glances at Diane. "What is the matter?"
Diane never answers Brandon. She is in a hurry to the cashier, pays for the food and drinks, and then rushing back to the station, Brandon has to chase her down.
“Diane, wait, why are you in a hurry?!”
She shouted at Brandon, but still walking as fast as she can. “I know a way to release Asher and the others!”
Brandon is in shock but also excited at the same time, he admires Diane from behind, while he couldn’t wait to see her in action.
