Purity began packing her belongings along with the rest of the board members, she would leave this place and never return. Seeing Scott had brought up so many memories and she did not want to relive them ever again.
“Ms. Evans please stay” Scott's voice echoed through the room or was it just her imagination that had amplified his voice so much that it put fear into her and froze her on the spot. Even though Scot had asked her so politely, Purity could still hear that demanding undertone that he always had.
Scott had waited for the entire room to clear up and as soon as the last member left, he was ready to take his pound of flesh.
“What are you doing here?” Scott asked, her back still facing him and just as she picked up her notebook, she bolted for the door but Scott had gotten there before her and blocked her exit.
Purity knew that no matter how much she had wanted to push Scott away, it would not work. Scott was a foot taller than she was, more masculine, and broad-shouldered putting her at a huge disadvantage. She held her bag to her chest as if she was trying to widen the space between her chest and that of Scott’s own but she could still feel his presence.
“Can I please just leave?” Purity asked Scott, her tone of voice low as she chose to look away from him rather than to talk directly to him.
“When you speak to me, you look at me. Now I ask again, what are you doing here?” Scott asked her, his voice aggressive as though Purity was the last person in the world he would have preferred seeing. Purity thought of not answering, after all, she owed him nothing that was until he began tapping his feet on the carpeted floor of the conference room.
Although the last time Purity had set her eyes on Scott was six years ago, she almost smiled, old habits were hard to rid oneself of because Scott tapped his foot on the ground whenever he was reaching his breaking point.
“Well then, I guess we have to do this the hard way” Scott muttered, before grabbing Purity by her arm and dragging her out of the conference room.
“Let me go!” Purity yelled as she tried freeing herself from Scott’s grip but there was no use, he was stronger than she was and she simply could not compare to him. Scott pulled her along the hallway as everyone stared at the both of them.
“Security!” Scott called out and it was then that Purity realized what was going on, Scott was going to throw her out of the building like a common thief. As he dragged her towards the elevator, Purity could not help but feel embarrassed as countless employees stood frozen on the spot and stared at her.
“Let me go, I am not a thief!” Purity begged and struggled until Scott stopped, two large men in suits stopped in front of them and they did not look friendly.
“Yes, Mr. Webb,” both men said in unison, ready to take their boss’s order and carry it out swiftly. Purity watched in disbelief, over the years that she had worked for Scott she had seen people dragged out of the building but never had she thought that she would be the one to be ejected from the building.
“I want you to throw this lady here out of this building; she is trespassing on private property. Got it?” Scott ordered both men, Purity watched in disbelief as one of the security guards took her from Scott and they began walking her towards the elevator.
Scott watched as both his security personnel walked Purity towards the elevator, seeing Purity was the last thing that Scott would have ever imagined. He remembered quite vividly how she had left without a word or not… she had simply vanished.
For months, he struggled to wrap his head around the work and it was only then that Scott realized how much he depended on Purity. He had blamed himself for their affair when she too was as guilty as he was.
“Stop sir, stop!” Scott turned around and it was Bertha calling out to him until she reached him, out of breath.
“What?” Scott asked Bertha, irritated that she was disrupting possibly one of the best revenge he was having.
“You cannot kick her out” she informed Scott, raising his eyebrow at Bertha; Scott could not understand why she would be defending a stranger like Purity.
“Why not?”
“Because she’s here to apply for the P.A position for Mr. David” Bertha spat out and Scott froze on the spot. Hearing Bertha’s words seemed to have stopped time.
“Stop!” He ordered his security personnel and they did just that they stopped. Even from the distance, both Scott and Purity looked into each other’s eyes, so many unsaid words were said through their eyes locking.
“Follow me to my office!” Scott ordered Purity; still shaken by the recent event she shrugged herself out of the security personnel’s grip. Scott faced Bertha, lowered his mouth to Bertha.
“Tell David that he should find himself another P.A” Scott whispered into her ear and poor Bertha’s eyes widened in fear.
“But Mr. Webb that’s impossible, she was meant for Mr. David but I mistakenly sent her into your conference—” Bertha stopped herself, the look Scott gave her indicated that in no way was he interested in what she had to said.
“Okay sir, I will do just that” Bertha obeyed without arguing any further, the last thing she wanted was to go against Scott, who had the power to fire her on the spot.
“Follow me to my office!” Scott ordered Purity before walking away from her, clutching her bag close to her chest, she ran after Scott seeing that he took such big steps with no regard that Purity’s feet were not as long as his.
Scott had always been a man that was sure of himself and knew what he wanted but Purity’s presence had sent him into turmoil, he was lost and he was not afraid to admit it. The anger that washed over him as he set his eyes on Purity was one that he could not contain but he still felt the tug of his heart as his security personnel walked her away.
Even as she walked behind him, Scott did not know what he was about to do to her or say to her. Her presence was one that Scott could feel; she still had that power over him after six years of being apart.
Unlocking his office door, Scott walked in, turned to his side of the desk, and sat down on his Italian leather office chair. He watched as Purity walked in, shut the door behind her and her attention quickly diverted as she studied his office. Scott watched as Purity’s eyes trailed over his book collection amongst other artifacts.
He inwardly smiled as he remembered that Purity was always one to pay attention to detail that little bit of happiness only lasted a second before it was replaced with anger and pain.
“Stop looking at my things like that otherwise you might—”
“Burn a hole in them?” Scott’s pupils widened as Purity finished his sentence for him, she quickly looked away, embarrassed that she had shown how much she truly knew him.
“Sit down” Scott pointed at the visitor’s seat in front of him, without hesitation, Purity walked towards it and sat down. Her handbag was still clutched close to her chest as she looked at the glass window behind Scott.
“Like my new office? it’s bigger than the one I used to have” Scott bragged, showing her just how rich he had become over the last six years that she had left him. Purity looked at Scott and smiled.
“It looks good, more modern. I remembered how you used to hate your previous office because everything felt so old and—” Purity paused at the sight of Scott’s twitching eye; he was irritated that she was reminding him of the past.
“I hope you are not trying to get into my good books” Scott’s warning was clear as day, a sign to Purity that she should not dare push his buttons any further. Purity remembered the days when she would follow Scott like some love-sick puppy and now she knew that she had to stand up for herself.
“Look if you are upset over what happened six years ago then I suggest that you forget it, just like I did okay” Purity blurted out. Scott seemed unmoved by what she had said; he simply stared at her with no emotion on his face.
“Firstly I am not upset about what happened six years ago, annoyed maybe, you did leave a lot of work undone which I had to take over from you,” Scott said plainly. Purity felt a sting in her heart, knowing that Scott had not missed her hurt her a bit, proving that once again she meant nothing to him.
“Oh” That was all Purity managed to say, there was nothing more to say to someone who had no emotions such as Scott.
“Enough of all this talking, be at work at eight in the morning and I do not take lightly to late coming” Scott ordered Purity before spinning in his office chair and facing the view of the other buildings in Canary Wharf.
“But I was supposed to work with Mr. David if I am correct” Purity argued but Scott simply rolled his eyes, a small part of him missing the old Purity, the one that never argued and simply did what she was told. Scott spun his office chair around, his cold stare aimed at Purity.
“Let me make things clear for you, I am the majority shareholder and what I say goes and if you do not agree, you may leave this building and never to set foot here again” Purity swallowed the lump in her throat; she knew that Scott was serious and she was not one to call his bluff.
“Okay,” Purity answered. She knew that there was no use arguing because she needed this job. After leaving the U.K six years ago, she had chosen to move to South Africa but now she was back without a penny to her name.
“Good, see you tomorrow at eight” Scott informed her and again spun his chair around to face the city. Purity stood from her chair and walked out of his office, as soon as she shut the door behind her and let out a breath, one that she had not realized that she had been holding.
Every step she took towards the elevator, Purity felt like running away and never coming back again. She knew the kind of man Scott was and he never missed an opportunity to get his revenge on those that wronged him, now here she was in his line of fire.
Moments later, there was a knock on his door and he knew just who it was that would dare knock on his door, after the scene, he had created with Purity a while ago.
“Come in!” Scott called out. Bertha peaked her head through his door.
“Here it is” Bertha raised the file in the air and quickly walked towards Scott’s table and handed it to him.
“Thank you, Bertha, you may leave” Scott instructed her and she did just as she was told. Scott looked through Purity’s resume, surprisingly she was still unmarried as well as worked in South Africa.
So that’s where you’ve been all along.
Scott thought to himself, the private investigator that he hired six years ago had found no traces of Purity in the city and Scott had simply given up the search.
Scott put down the file and smiled at himself, he had a huge score to settle with Purity, and luckily, for him, she was delivered to him on a silver platter.
